Am I crazy, or should this loss be pinned on Marmol?
It wasn’t his finest hour, but the biggest issue for me remains thumping the first domino after Q retired Schwarber leading off the 6th. If they had ridden Q a little longer, then maybe none of the other stuff happens. And next, I wonder how much of that decision can really be pinned on Oli. Was it a foregone conclusion, or at least a strong suggestion, already determined pre-game by committee (front office and Oli) that Q would not see Hoskins for a 3rd plate appearance?
In the local paper it was mentioned that Flaherty was up and ready. That’s silly. Pallante did his job and got a GB. It’s not his fault that someone decided it was best to pull the IF’ers in and not have them playing at DP depth with 1 out and the bases jammed.
EuroDandy…Of course. He easily handled the big bats for Philly all day. Hoskins? I’m afaid of Schwarber and Harper 10 to 1 over Hoskins. None of it even qualifies to be termed nonsense…
Yep 1td, you can’t fault Pallante. The consideration for Flaherty, though, is you really could’ve used swing and miss stuff on the mound after Helsley left. I was surprised they went with Pallante unless Flaherty told the bench he wasn’t feeling it.
Yeah, you could have used a K, but a GIDP would have been better. That’s what he got, but someone decided to play the IF at the same depth as a runner at 3B and no outs in a tie ballgame would have dictated.
1td…if Helsley couldn’t grip a baseball then that should have been determined before he went out there.
And another thing…An article in the local paper points out that Marmol used Yepez to PH and that worked out real well. Heck, my 12 year old niece knows to PH for Dickerson facing the LHP Alvarado in that situation.
GameCard…I’d say so. I watched a presser with Marmol after the game. He clearly stated the middle finger was fine in the 8th. In the 9th he lost feeling in it. No kidding.
Marmol seemed hesitant to pull the trigger here. Why isn’t Yadi recognizing there is a problem with Helsley and making a mound visit or waving the trainer out? or Maddux? or Helsley? seems everyone dropped the ball on this one. After the single and the walk someone should have been doing something.
And to add insult to injury, Max was boo’ed off the field by the fans at Citi Field.
Maybe they expected more from a guy making over $40,000,000 dollars a year?
In our last three playoff games
One in 2020 one in 2021 and today our starters have pitched 16 2/3 innings and allowed 2 ER and we have lost all 3 games! We have an ongoing bullpen problem, period! We are near the bottom of the teams in playoffs in bullpen Era and in today’s game it really doesn’t matter how good your starters are if your bullpen fails again and again as proven by the stat above1toughD, yes, yes and yes! Our bullpen has been mismanaged since nice 2012 IMO and we keep getting beat at the end of games! Perhaps they are just not as good as the opponents but they have failed repeatedly to close things out when it counted and I for sure think manager decisions have had a big part in that! The only thing we could count on all year is Helsley and I truly believe he was nowhere near 100% today! No way he should have been put out there for more than an inning and left in way too long when things went wrong! We can’t win a championship with an average bullpen being mismanaged! Ain’t gonna happen!
Steve60…Command of the strike zone is normally Helsley’s long suit. When he allowed the BB to Harper after getting ahead 1-2, it should have tripped an alarm in the Redbird dugout. His day should have been over, but he was allowed to work to two more hitters. You saw the results. Another BB and a HBP. Marmol clearly stated in a post-game presser that Helsley felt fine in the 8th, but lost feeling in his middle finger as the 9th progressed. Almost every pitch was nowhere near the strike zone. Clearly he couldn’t properly grip the baseball. Why was he left in there?
Well had stuff going on all day so had to record game and dodge any news. I almost wish I hadn’t missed the news. To me this was on marmol totally. Helsley was coming off an injured knuckle. Maybe it wasn’t the reason for his collapse but regardless there were question marks. So with that in mind, why would you use your pen in such a way that the guy coming off an injury has to be extended. They take quintana out two outs at least too soon in the 6th which the relief pitcher gets us out for some reason his name escapes my mind. So gallegos starts the 7th. I have no issue with that if you plan on using pallante or someone else not the pitcher coming off the injury in the eighth if gallegos falters. If you are planning on bringing helsley in after gallegos, then someone else should have pitched the 7th, then bring gallegos in the 8th if things go to plan. Then helsley only has to go one inning. I know the first game of a three game series is very important but that doesn’t mean you get stupid with your pitching moves. Of course our trio of hall of famers didn’t do much at the plate so there is that. But this is easily on marmol.
I like Marmol okay, but it wasn’t just the BP decisions today. I didn’t really understand the rhyme or reason to the order of battle insofar as the batting order. I thought he had the right guys in there, but the placement was a little in disarray to put it mildly. And I’ll never for the life of me be able to understand why the IF was pulled in with 1 out and a 1 run lead. Bizzarro…
Well far as batting order. Marmol is always doing something different with it. I’m sure it has something to do with analytics. To me Donovan is the best guy at the top cause he knows how to work himself on but that’s just me. But wherever they hit, our big guys need to come through.

Well, that was a total dud. Amazing how all the good feelings of the year can be eviscerated in one wretched inning. I really hope the team can focus tomorrow and gut out a win, because a sweep would be a bad way to finish.
