I’ll be a no show for the late west coast games, but good luck. It will be interesting to see how Yepez is used.

As I’ve said for years I always enjoy the late games from the west coast. I just wish that these games weren’t so pressure packed. The playoffs are on the line and if we get swept by the Padres and Dodgers it’s going to be a long winter. Really our only hope lies in the Mets beating the Brewers at least one more time this week. I sure hope DeGrom is going to pitch one of those two games.

Cardinals have had 5 games postponed this season due to rain and the best I can tell, the only one that hasn’t been made up is washout at home against KC way back in April. I don’t guess they’ll have to make that game up unless something either good or disastrous occurs.

Edit; Wait a minute. It looks like they played 3 in KC in May. Doesn’t seem fair that they had to play that one on the road.

Rats…I always enjoy seeing the Cardinals play either the Dodgers or the Giants. The Padres are okay too, but the two others are vintage NL teams. However, I’m not crazy about the late starts. Mrs. 1TD asked me the other day if I needed to add anything to the grocery list. I told her to make sure we had plenty of coffee…Haha!

Sorry to see Gorman go back down, but he will be back. Just needs more maturity.

A broken record here, but the club should have put Sosa at short and left Edman at second from the get-go, to quote Mike Shannon. That would have created an all-world infield defense, increased our athleticism, and given Little Nolan more time to develop his skills.

BikeMike…So, do you think they’ll go with Eddie at 2B and Paulie at SS.? I’d like to see Eddie entrenched at SS and Donovan in the line-up every day at 2B unless it quickly proves to be a clear liability on the right side of the IF. Maybe move Eddie over to 2B and get Dejong some innings as a D replacement in late and close situations?

I like more of the the Edman SS/Donovan 2B combo, with PDJ as a late inning defense guy moving Edman to 2B.

And retirement makes West coast games a cinch.

Donovan is an everyday player and Ollie knows it. He will be in the lineup.

Yeah, the Eddie & Donnie duo is my preference as well. I really don’t know what Marmol will come up with insofar as how the lines of the script are worded to justify the presense of DeJong if he’s included on the post-season roster, but I think his name will be on there. As for the late starts for the W coast games, Euro, I normally get a little nap time every afternoon anyway, so they’re no sweat as long as I coffee-up after din-din…Haha!

I just woke up from a nap and should be good for a 9:40 EST start. Also, Eddie and Donavan should start at SS & 2B every day until they clinch.

Another baseball trivia question for the pre-game. Closed book, closed internet, open mind.

Take a close look at the following slash line. In case you forgot, the order is: batting avg/on base pct/slug pct/OPS

    .184/.181/.208/.389

It’s an odd one for sure. The question is what makes it odd? Is it even possible? Even if it’s theoretically possible, could it ever happen over the course of an actual season?

I agree GameCard, but what about the post-season? The only reason for DeJong to be on the 26 man would be in the event of an injury. He sure wouldn’t be called upon to PH and he doesn’t bring any sort of extraordinary speed for a needed baserunner situation. Only reason to include him on the roster that I can come up with would be in the case Edman were to suffer a slight injury that would possibly hobble him for a game or two. Dejong would then be there on the roster to fill in at SS without Eddie being ineligible for the remainder of that round and the next. Which I’m pretty sure is how it’s set up if they were to have to add DeJong to the 26 man in the event of injury.

Same for the post-season. Dejong at this point is a reserve SS to give rest for Eddie. No more.

They need to have a reserve middle infielder on the active roster, now and in the playoffs. Right now, that is DeJong.

EuroDandy… I’m going to take a quick guess and not spend much time thinking about this one because I don’t want to run out of Ibuprofen…Haha! I’m going to say it’s odd because it resembles Paulie’s line and there’s a lower OBP than BA? And yeah, I’ll guess it’s possible, but I have NO idea why!

BW…Yep, too bad Aaron Miles isn’t around.

Batting average only considers hits and at bats. On base percentage takes into account hits, walks and hit by pitches in relation to at bats, walks, hit by pitches and sacrifice flies. A situation where a batter has no walks or hit by pitches but does have a sacrifice fly would have a lower OBP than BA.

I don’t see anyone with a lower obp than ba. May have misread that td1.

BW’s comment made me think of middle IF’er Aaron Miles. Some of you may remember the scary story of when he was in the minor leagues and a member of an Astro’s affiliate, he and a couple of his teammates were subjected to an armed robbery in which a couple of gunmen burst into the player’s hotel room. Aaron was actually taken hostage by one of the gunmen after police were called and somehow wrestled him to the floor at which time the police shot the armed perpetrator as Miles was grappling with him. He was fortunate to have come away with his life.

    jjcfstl…I thought it read, BA.184/OBP.181?

Good answer 1td. And forsch31 gave a very good and precise answer as to why it is mathematically possible to have BA greater than OBP. Why does that not surprise me? But what about practically speaking? Any examples?

yep jj, see the example I gave in the question. BA is higher than OBP.

Forsch31…I wasn’t aware that a sac-fly had any effect on an OBP. What about a sac-bunt?

EuroDandy…He (Forsch31) sure did! My guess was just that…a wild one.

Sacrifice has no effect on either batting average or on base percentage. Sacrifice fly lowers OBP, but has no effect on batting average.
