This is easily the fastest team the Cards have ever fielded that I have seen. And I doubt that a swifter team exists in baseball today. Look at these guys:

Hicks(what the heck, when you’re talking anything related to “fast”, you have to mention his name).On the bunting issue, it’s a lost craft. Now you often hear they don’t do it, because coaches don’t ask them to do it, because coaches know they can’t do. I guess it’s just not emphasized at any level these days. The other night (in the extra inning game I think), Yadi and Edman both looked bad bunting, just jabbing the bat at the ball. You have to use legs/hips to get the job done.
I guess if I were a guy like Edman, or any player who is hurt by infield shifts, I’d devote some serious time the next off season to becoming an effective bunter. It could pay enormous dividends. If what I supposed in the first paragraph is true, it might not be a good idea to start now.
When we played Cincy in that last series and the extra innings futility to score game the small ball game came into play. Our inability to bunt was obvious. I bet Yadi knows how and I bet Willie McGee could teach it. Going to the strictly DH has killed the bunt cause the pitchers were to one’s left to learn it. Afraid that was gonna happen. Miss Whitey Ball.

Go Cardinals!Weather report from the Bling cave 10 miles SW of Busch. A lumpy looking overcast. There’s some water up there. Nothing but a passing sprinkle since last night. Real men wouldn’t even have brought the tarp with them today, but you know how it is now days.
EuroDandy…I wouldn’t go so far as to call a sac-bunt an art. The sac-bunt was once a play not just pitchers, but all players, were expected to be able to perform and was practiced all the time. However, bunting for a base hit is definitely an art, but everyone simply can’t perform it successfully and be a Rod Carew or Brett Butler. I used to always maintain that if a starting pitcher could master not only the sac-bunt, but also the fielding of his position, it would add 1 or 2 W’s to his yearly total.
I’m approx. 30 miles from Busch Stadium and it’s hammering down rain at the moment at our house. Doesn’t look like it’ll last too long though.

Rain delay allowing, I’d follow Adam 12 up with an episode of Dragnet, Rat. They are the quintessential 1-2 viewing punch.
In my mind the bunt should ONLY be used by those skilled at it, and as a surprise. If the infield is cheating in you’re foiled.
La Russa drove me insane the way he gave up outs to move men over, many times resulting in catastrophe.
I’m not necessarily a big advocate of bunting either, but it has its place and should probably be practiced more as evidenced by the futile attempts you see these days. Where I really believe it should be practiced more is by guys who are heavily shifted on and by fast guys like Edman who could use it as a weapon. I take that to be bikemike’s point since he has mentioned it several times over the past. I agree with him it could be used more in those situations if the player is capable.
A batter that’s practiced bunting can bunt the ball basically anywhere they want. If you are trying to get the runner to third, easiest play is make third baseman field it. Trying to get a runner to second, make first baseman field it. There are exceptions defending on skill of fielders involved and maybe their glove side but pretty standard. I believe in the bunt game at the major league level, same as I believe in great defense or say free throw shooting in basketball. The thing is to bunt effectively you have to practice it, not just know basic fundamentals. I don’t really think teas practice after spring training. You can work on it during warm ups but you have to use the buddy system.
As somebody we all know and love used to say … Hey, this is the big leagues!
How can a ballplayer get to this level and not know how to bunt? It’s like not knowing how to catch a popup.
Insofar as the sac-bunt, with the make believe fairy tale baserunner placed at 2B in extras, I’m astonished that the sac-bunt play isn’t dilligently drilled into everyone on the roster these days. A baserunner at 2B and no outs? Immediately sac him over to 3B. Now, all it takes to get the lead is a H, SF, GB to the right side, WP, PB, E, or even a BK.
1td, especially if you’re the home team and the visitors failed to score in the top half of the inning. I wouldn’t have Goldy bunting then (haha), but there are quite a few that it makes a lot of sense.

That was a funny play, announcers had fun with it. Arenado held up a bit, though, to make sure it got down, but Carlson ain’t slow, for sure.
Let’s be honest though, it always good to have Yadi running with you in the same camera shot to make you look faster. 😉
According to the Doppler Radar the rain is going to linger in the St. Louis area until at least 5:00 and probably later. I wonder how long they will wait? And are there any common off days the rest of the season?
I think the reasoning on not bunting with a ghost runner on particularly the visiting team is that no one wants to give up an out to get a run they figure the home team will score anyway. Go for the bigger inning I guess. I don’t know what the analytics say on it. It also would depend on who you have up. Are you going to ask one of your big run producing guys to bunt. Now far as the home team, it’s crazy if they don’t try if it’s still tied but maybe analytics say otherwise.
Looks like first pitch is forthcoming. Bizarre weather pattern here today traveling East to West. Rare, but when that happens, it’s hard to predict sometimes.
Mikolas gives up two out double, hopefully it here in the first. Hopefully mikolas doesn’t implode like he did last outing
