Gant’s bothers me too, gscottar. I’m old fashioned and admit it. As far as appearances go, I don’t care for a man who looks like a woman. Never have, never will. And as far as Bader, a poster on another board said something interesting. He said he has never seen a more average all around ballplayer with a more overinflated opinion of himself. So it’s not just the hair. That’s only one aspect. He should look to the examples that Waino, Goldy, and Arenado set. True professionals. Performance with humility.

Long reply to why shifts effective. Back to his high school coaching and Dave Duncan’s binders, used info to help set defense. 1st step was to put SS on other side of 2B. Then experimented in AA with 2B on other side of 2B bag. Took awhile to get pitchers acclimated. Guys today cannot modify swing. Can’t play pepper any more (a bat control drill) because of the groundkeepers. In this generation, most batters can’t place ball (like Yadi does). High percentage of batters hit the ball in the same place. This is why shifts are effective.

This may be the stupidest thing I have yet heard concerning baseball.
Some wouldn’t know a true professional if they were standing right in front of them. However onto what should be talked about on this thread, I like the ideal of curbing the shifts. I don’t want them totally taken away but infielders should be on the infield and there should only be 3 outfielders. I don’t like the pickoff thing and I hate the pitch clock. If you want to penalize guys who take too long, do it financially. Dock people a certain amount for time over acceptable times. Or the umpires should call balls if it goes over a time. But 15 seconds, come on. Let’s just ruin the game some more. Far as docking people money, they can keep track of time guys go over and dock them when they reach certain percentages, they keep track of all other stats. I do like making lefties have to step off, it’s always been troubling they get an advantage they shouldn’t have. I would like to see more base stealing. But I don’t want second base just handed to the runners.

Brain, if you’re going to chastise someone for redundancy, why don’t you also chastise posters on here who criticize a poster personally instead of refuting their post (and call other posters unpleasant names….if it walks like a duck….).

Rinse and repeat.Was planning on letting this go but seems like I’m getting called out here. If you are going to call players out just because of how they look or act around the batters box, you have to be willing to take being called out for doing that. Their play and how they exist with their teammates, as well as some off the field stuff is fine but how one looks, talks, or how they get themselves up for an at bat is just wrong. This site is supposed to be for fans supporting the team and players but also giving critiques of their play and even character whether it be positive or negative. But not this other stuff. I’ve stated my case and I’ll move on but I will defend the team I like and any of its players against baseless negative stuff. Their play on the field is open for proper discussion.
To the topic of this thread, in post-game, Shildt said they had hitters who needed the work (assume Carpenter the DH) so will not have pitchers hit until Sunday.
Well I’m glad they came to that conclusion there Brian. Though it just seems like an excuse to give carpenter more at bats not neccessarily anyone else but it’s still fine.
The Cards announcers today talked about some of the rules being experimented with in various affiliated leagues this year. What a travesty. Hitters can’t hit any more so penalize fielders. Runners can’t steal any more so penalize pitchers.

Far as I’m concerned I don’t care what a player looks like as long as he produces.
Far as the outfield goes. As a glass half full guy. I expect from 2020 and 2019 that in 2021 I expect a OFer to perform over expectation, a player not meeting standards, a guy who will meet ML average expectation and the 4th being the backup qb who will perform at about average level who the fans want to play more. lol
If the corners are producing and showing some power, having a mainly defensive CF is fine. Carlson should be solid and O’Neill is now hitting well, so the whole unit may work. The play to date of Thomas has also been a plus.
An interesting sub plot. Nogowski is getting a lot of looks. He has no chance of being a starter absent injury to Goldy. He is hitting well as he has in the higher MiLB levels. At 28 it is time for him to be somewhere he can get his break. On our roster that would be in the PH/DH role. But it depends on whether the organization is committed to Carp in that role, seeing as the starter at 2B thing is not happening. There is no way Nogo and Carp both make the active roster.
$18,500,000 says Carp will be on the active roster. Even a small ROI is better than no ROI at all to this POBO.
