    Rondon……304/.393/.609/1.002
    Sosa……..130/.250/.174/.424
    Carpenter…028/.205/.056/.260

I am not a Rondon fan at all but, man, he has to feel like road kill. His line is better than the two guys who made it combined.

Joey Votto – is he off the Covid DL yet? And he is going to be playing for the Reds this opening series in Cincinnati?

    Willie said:
“So I guess Shildt basically lied when he said if you hit you will earn it.”

I guess I missed Shildt saying that Willie. I do remember Mo saying “you hit, you play” when the topic was Carpenters playing time as a starter. Carp didn’t hit this ST and is an expected bench player, which is in line with Mo’s earlier comment.

What are the rules on optioning again? A player can’t be added again after being optioned out unless replacing an injured player, or 10-14 days? And the player has to stay down for 20 days to burn an option?

10 day recall window unless replacing injured player
20 days to burn an option – correct
30 days to burn an option if injured remainder of season
5 service years needs player consent to be optioned down

Thanks JJ. I imagine this is not the roster in 10-15 days. I would think they would rotate Whitley and Thomas with others until AAA starts in May. Nothing replaces live game action.

Makes perfect sense 27, to keep the roster fresh. I’m thinking Woodford made the roster since both Gant and Ponce are both pushed to the rotation. Woodfords multiple IP gives them depth in the pen if a starter blows up.

What do you make of Dean and Williams beating out Thomas, 25?

It’s not a huge surprise given Williams’ left handed bat, but having only one CFer on the roster could become a big issue, fast. And Carlson isn’t likely to be a good CFer either, defensively. Perhaps Edman is the backup CFer.

Schildt did talk about competition to win the spots. If a guy does much better to win the spots in fact doing much better than even the two guys combined and doesn’t get the spot then it basically is a lie there jj. Now carpenter making it was guaranteed, he couldn’t have done much worse but he’s owed that money so he’s had a spot waiting but sosa no. Heck rondon looks like stan musial compared to sosa and carpenter. so yea it was a lie and I wasn’t talking about Mo. Though carpenter hasn’t hit but he’s still on the bench and they have already said he’s going to get lots of at bats so Mo lied to.

No thanks Willie, I can’t support calling the brass liars before the season even begins. Truth is, you have no idea how many PA’s Carp will or will not get in 2021. You’re doing the drama queen thing.

Arenado and Goldy are everyday players. Edmond will play every day. Carp “will get lots of at bats” ? where Willie? DH is “lots of AB’s”? PH? There will need to be an injury or Carp is deserving of more at bats.

I don’t believe that Carp will get more than a hundred or 200 at bats at most unless he’s hitting. The Cards don’t really have much room for him to play anyway, as jj alluded to. If the DH was available, things might be different.

I think they want Thomas to play every day in Memphis. It won’t do Dean any harm to be a 4th outfielder.

Well jj you are entitled to your thoughts. No drama here, I call it based on what I see and hear. If someone says there is open competition and it comes down to performance and a particular player that is being sent down and he far outplayed the other candidates, then what was said was a lie. Far as Mo and carpenter, I only included carpenter cause he’s the other main infielder unless you count nogowski who will probably mainly pinch hit, in my original comment. You brought up mo and carpenter which I didn’t at the time. Like I said, carpenter was a lock to make the team. Whether Mo ends up being a liar, time will tell. Far as Shildt, maybe they told rondon he had no shot to make team before spring training but I doubt it. Like I said sosa was out of options and maybe that had something to do with it but it’s still basically a lie when rondon totally outperformed him, wasn’t close. I bet if you talked to rondon and he could be honest, he would say the same thing.

Also on the carpenter at bats. Shildt said he’s going to get them. He mentioned edman playing outfield. Sono I don’t know but I’m just going by what the manager said or what Brian wrote anyway.

    Sounds like a political discussion.
    He lied! Very productive discourse.

O’Neill can play CF rather easily too, along with Edman.

Good point, Pads. O’Neill has some experience there, but I don’t believe Edman does.

Its not like we have Babe Ruth waiting for a roster slot. We can survive without a potential ML average or 4A guy for a while until they ease Carp out.

willie, let me put a little different spin on this. I don’t know what was said or in what context it was said. Also, I don’t think Schildt is the one who is sending people down or keeping players on the major league roster. He has input but the final decision is either Mo or Girsch.

Could the comment have been in relation to who is starting? If Schildt starts the players who deserve to start based on ability and performance, he could still be telling the truth. Goldschmidt, Arenado, Molina and DeJong were almost guaranteed their starting positions no matter what happened in spring training. Edman and Carlson were right behind them. The last 2 OF starting positions, however, were more wide open with O’Neill and Bader the leaders going into spring training.

While I think Rondon deserved the roster spot based on spring training, final roster spots are almost always affected by available options. It is very rare for the Cardinals to give up players like Sosa or Carpenter without giving them a portion of the season to prove whether or not they belong. Carpenter would probably just be released. Sosa would have to pass through waivers which he may not clear. Even if he did, I think he could declare free agency based on this being his 9th professional season.

While Edman is not an accomplished CFer, he has started a couple of games in CF in the minors. He has played a grand total of 225 innings in the OF between college and professional baseball. He has the speed and arm to be a centerfielder. However, he needs to show he has the ability to read the ball off the bat well. If he can, he could be a good CFer. To be honest, if he would continue hitting the way he has in the majors AND become a good to great defensive CFer, I would love to see him start in CF….even over Bader. I think his bat would profile the best there.

It’s bad that in a professional sport, players more deserving of a roster spot don’t get it due to non-performance related factors.

I can’t think of one time that it’s worked out for the Cardinals to keep a player in the last year of his contract when he performed miserably in spring training. But I have a rather short term memory.

Nice to see Nogowski make it. I hope they give him AB’s instead of Carpenter.

Sosa over Rondon should not surprise anyone who has been reading this thread. In a response to a question about this matter the other day (and recapped here on p. 15), Mo was very clear in saying they intend to keep as many talented players as they can.

Carpenter over Rondon is about not eating $20.5 MM and potentially watching Carpenter contribute elsewhere this season while the Cardinals are paying his salary.

Rondon is still under contract and can contribute later if needed. This is a point in time situation that could be reversed at any time.

To forsch’s idea about Edman in CF, it would also free up 2B for Gorman next season.

Indeed. I guess it will be about how much progress Gorman makes this year and how the outfield looks by season’s end. I’m still of the view that the Cards probably look to add a bat out there after this year, especially with the DH coming. I suppose it’s possible that they could look for a SS, move Dejong to 2nd, Edman to CF and have Gorman fill in wherever, as well. We shall see.
