It wasn’t me who singled out Schlesener – it was VEB. I am not saying they are right or wrong on any of these guys. I am only saying that it is intersting to see a non conformist prospect opinion and makes one examine if the different perspective has merit or not.

CC, I liked it better in the old days when you were more outspoken. 😉

The CardsTalk community also voted on their own Top 50 prospects during the offseason.

BHC, what was your assessment of that list? It isn’t a normal stop for me.

Thanks for sharing. Their names are similar to ours, but of course, in a different order. Some guys are higher than here (Arozarena, PDL, Kruczynski, Williams, Capel, Schrock, Sosa, Greene). Some guys lower (Thomas, Cabrera, Torres, Adolis). They also passed on the “non-conformist” names at VEB.

One of the things that stood out to me in the voting process is some of the voters fell in love with the DSL guys. With that said there was only guy on the list I heartily opposed and that was Whalen. Other than that the list seems to compare well with other lists, including the TCN list.

If you got all the way to #46 without a major disagreement, that seems pretty good. It is pretty much a dart throw at that point, anyway.

By the way I am a big fan of Nogowski. I hope that guy gets a chance to move past AA.

I think Schlesener has very good potential. Scouting reports I heard have him low 90’s fastball, and big breaking ball (curve?). He should be on track for Peoria, so maybe he starts there, and eventually getting moved to bullpen might move him faster. And I believe he is only 22/23. His issue is control. It has improved a bit, and he can rack up some double digit strikeout games.

Not a good thing when you lead your league in walks two straight years. Schlesener only tied for sixth in the NYPL in 2018 and his rate was just under five per nine, his career best. They see enough flashes in him to keep him around.

BHC…. thanks for that top-50 list. Its strange that with the same prospect information, opinions are varied so widely. My personal list is closer to the TCN, but still quite different.

If anyone finds other credible sources, it would be great if they could share and list their choices. As I have done in the past, I’ll put a composite list together and post it here before opening day. IMO, the results would be a more opinionative list.

Schlesener is on a course to start out ’19 at Peoria. Movement and promotions at the higher levels will help his cause. I think that Rondon and Prendergast will surely move up to Palm Beach. Right now it seems that Springfield has some open starting spots… but Walsh, JCruz and Fagalde should be penciled in to move up creating a few domino effect open spots further down the levels.

They guy at VEB ranked Reyes at #6. I would drop expletives if it wouldn’t get me banned. How in the world do you rank Reyes #6?

Seems like RB didn’t trust Reyes to not be injured, and did like the upside of the other guys. Personally I can’t see any reason anyone would put Reyes any lower than #2, and that’s only if you are dreaming on Gorman becoming a good 3B with a big bat.

Nogowski may be 26 but he could still make the big leagues. JMart made his debut at age 28.

I would like to see Nogowski become the next Allen Craig, only with a happier ending.

Well I don’t frequent that site a lot mainly because they don’t bother to moderate the comments and allow people to launch personal attacks and trolls. Who want so visit a website where the posters can routinely tell each other to go **** themselves? Brian’s site is much better and better informed users.

Well I still have Reyes #1, if just barely. But I can understand why a rationally frustrated and perhaps somewhat pessimistic (fatalistic?) analyst would place him considerably lower.

I understand it, but disagree with it. The thing is, Reyes was SO amazing during his rehab appearances, that I perceive his ceiling as now probably higher than it’s ever been — although, rather paradoxically, achieving that ceiling is lower in likelihood than ever, due to Reyes’ injury inclinations. In the past, his inefficiency, the lack of command, always made him a #2 upside guy for me. Now however, if he’s not physically broken, in my opinion he could be a Cy Young type.

I don’t imagine anyone here needs a reminder, but the rehab games totaled 23 innings and featured an otherworldly 44-to-7 strikeout/walk tally (and as a bonus, just 7 base hits). He fanned 26 of the 49 batters in the two AA and AAA starts. Alex hadn’t shown anything like that sort of domination since his final month of Low-A ball, when he had a 38/6 K/BB over 25 innings pitched.

Maybe my glasses are Cardinal-colored, but with the recent seasons of Tommy Pham and Marco Gonzales, I’m less quick to give up on “injury guys.” For a bigger talent, I’ll cross my fingers and hope for health. So I’m giving Alex Reyes one more year. If on the other hand he comes up badly injured this Spring Training, and is therefore still eligible for prospect lists 12 months from now, he’ll get a HUGE downgrade from me. Almost surely lower than 6th.

Per bwar Reyes has a 2.3 War in 50 innings. At that rate, with just 130 ip in 2019 he gives you about 6.0 War. Reyes is a 3-4 win upgrade for this team (even as a reliever) if healthy.

This is the part of the analysis that should stand out for all Cardinal fans, both casual and avid.

Do Sosa and Perez, and you can include Edman, make you feel confident that if DeJong falters, they would be able to step in as starters? I believe that the organization placed a lot of faith in Delvin Perez to become the SS of the future and disregarded the position.(i.e.-there was a period where serious catching prospects, prior to Knizner, were not given importance because of Molina’s steadfastness). Second base seems to provide the same dilemma. Wong is the choice to be there hopefully for at least the next few years. Only Urias and Shrock are the depth we have there now.

Thankfully we have some fine young third basemen that have the potential to step into a starting job at third base in the near future. Both 3B and SS have been chronic positions recently and it will be important to have DeJong and Wong become semi-permanent respectively.

I didn’t include the catching and outfield positions, as well as the starting pitching because for the next two years we have sufficient prospect depth. Its my opinion it is after that that things might get dicey.(a general drop off of talent).

Jacob Spencer Schlesener…..a wild black stallion just waiting to be broke. A young (just turned 22 this past Fall) southpaw with his raw, but real potential isn’t going anywhere. He’d be scooped up so quick your head would spin! If this kid’s control can be even moderately harnessed this upcoming season, then he’ll shoot up like a rocket in our Top 50 Prospect rankings. One stat that really catches my eye is the miniscule 3 dingers ( one of them of the inside the park variety) Jacob has yielded in his 124 professional innings. You get the distinct feeling that hitters feel very very uncomfortable vs this kid.

They keep feeling that Sosa is a premier prospect. It will take a big improvement in ’19 for him to earn that distinction. I like that they feel Mendoza is still a top quality prospect despite a somewhat disappointing ’18. TCN had Roberts #12 (without O’Neill) and Baker#14. Helsley, Carlson and Thomas missed their top-10. To me, Sosa is the biggest surprise.
