On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals system took four losses by a total of six runs. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach 1B Jack Gurevitch, homered, singled, walked and drove in three. Other standouts include Zach Levenson, Jesus Baez, Ty Van Dyke and Matthew Miura.
St. Louis rehabber John King relieved Wilkerson, surrendered one run in 2/3 of n inning and took the loss. Chris Roycroft tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Gwinnett went up 3-0 in the top of the second inning.
Memphis scored one run in the home half of the inning. Blaze Jordan reached on an error. César Prieto and Matt Lloyd walked. Noah Mendlinger grounded into a double play as Jordan scored.
The Redbirds tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Prieto walked. Lloyd doubled to plate Prieto. Lloyd later scored on a ground out by Bryan Torres.
The Stripers broke the tie with a run against King in the eighth to win 4-3.
The Redbirds scored three runs on four hits. JJ Wetherholt was 2-for-4 and he stole his fifth base since joining Memphis.
Memphis is 65-57 overall, 24-25 in the second half. The Redbirds are 10 games back of Scranton in the International League standings.
Saturday’s game: vs. Gwinnett, Curtis Taylor RHP (8-4, 3.56) vs. Jose Suarez LHP (0-1, 4.24) 6:35 CT. Defending NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale, rehabbing with Gwinnett, is also scheduled to pitch.
The Double-A Cardinals were defeated by the Travelers by a 5-3 score on Friday. Starter Pete Hansen pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits, struck out three and walked three.
Jack Ralston relieved Hansen, surrendered two runs in 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. Randel Clemente tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Arkansas scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to lead 2-0.
In the top of the fifth, Springfield tied the game at 2-2. Joshua Baez and Zach Levenson singled. Baez was caught stealing third base. Ramon Mendoza singled to score Levenson. Graysen Tarlow singled. Mendoza crossed the plate on a single by Brody Moore.
The Travelers regained the lead with a run in the home fifth. The Cardinals tied the game again in the sixth. Leonardo Bernal singled and advanced to third on an error. Bernal came home on a sac fly by Baez.
Arkansas put up two unanswered runs against Ralston in the seventh to win the game 5-3.
The High-A Chiefs fell to the Dragons by a 5-3 score in Dayton on Friday, dropping their current road trip record to 1-9. Starter Braden Davis pitched four innings, gave up four runs on three hits, fanned seven and walked three. Davis took the loss.
Benjamin Arias relieved Davis and surrendered one run in 2 1/3 innings. Aaron Holiday tossed the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Dayton went up 4-0 in the fourth inning and added a run in the fifth.
The Chiefs scored one run in the sixth. Tre Richardson singled. Jon Jon Gazdar walked. Ryan Campos single to plate Richardson.
Peoria added two runs in the eighth to shrink the lead to 5-3. Campos tripled. Jesus Baez followed with a two-run home run, his second long ball in two nights.
The High-A Cardinals were edged by the Mets in 11 innings at Roger Dean Stadium on Friday.
Starter Ty Van Dyke pitched three scoreless, no-hit innings with two strikeouts. Through his first eight professional innings, the Cardinals’ 10th-rounder this July has allowed no runs on just one hit, one walk and fanned six.
Bobby Olsen relieved Van Dyke and surrendered two runs in three innings. Zack Showalter threw two scoreless innings. In his Beach Birds debut, Jovi Galvez yielded four runs in the ninth. Sam Brodersen allowed four runs, one earned, in the final two innings and took the loss.
St. Lucie took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Beach Birds tied the score in the home half. Jalin Flores singled and stole second base. Cameron Nickens singled to plate Flores.
The Mets added a run in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, which remained until the top of the ninth when the Mets scored four runs.
The Cardinals were undaunted and put up five runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Nickens, Chase Heath and Ryan Weingartner walked. Yordalin Pena was hit by a pitch and Nickens scored. Matthew Miura doubled to clear the bases for three runs. Jack Gurevitch drove in Miura on a single.
St. Lucie scored in the top of the ninth, but Palm Beach responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and the game was again tied. Michael Dattalo started the inning on second base and came home on a single by Weingartner.
The game went into the 11th when the Mets put up three runs to take the lead 10-7. The Cardinals rallied in the bottom frame but fell short with two runs on a home run by Gurevitch for the final score of 10-9.
The offense scored nine runs on eight hits. Gurevitch was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Weingartner was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Miura had three RBI. Pena scored two runs.
Flores stole his first base. Weingartner swiped his third bag. Nickens was caught stealing.
On defense, third baseman Dattalo committed a costly fielding error in the top of the 11th. Miura had an outfield assist at home plate.
Palm Beach is 56-60 on the season, 24-27 in the second half, and is in third place in the FSL East 11.5 games back of St. Lucie.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-3 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach 3B Jalin Flores, singled, walked and hit a two-run walk-off home run. Other standouts include Jimmy Crooks, Joshua Baez, Zach Levenson, Deniel Ortiz and Christian Martin.
The Triple-A Redbirds lost to the Stripers by four runs at AutoZone Park on Wednesday. Starter Max Rajcic pitched six innings, gave up seven runs, four earned, on nine hits, struck out one and walked one. Rajcic took the loss.
Oddanier Mosqueda relieved Rajcic and threw a scoreless seventh. Chris Roycroft surrendered one unearned run in the eighth. Gordon Graceffo tossed a scoreless ninth.
Gwinnett went up 5-0 in the first inning and added a run in the top of the third.
Memphis scored a run in the home third to cut the lead to 6-1. Mike Antico walked. Jimmy Crooks singled. Blaze Jordan singled and Antico came home.
The Stripers increased their lead to 7-1 in the sixth. The Redbird shrunk the lead to 7-3 in the seventh. Antico singled. Bryan Torres walked. Crooks doubled to plate Antico. Torres came home on a sac fly by Jordan.
Gwinnett extended their lead to 8-3 in the eighth. Memphis scored one run in the ninth to bring the final score to 8-4. Crooks doubled and later scored on a ground out by César Prieto.
The offense scored four runs on 11 hits. Crooks was 4-for-5 with an RBI. Andy Yerzy was 2-for-4. Jordan had two RBI. Antico scored two runs.
Michael Siani stole his 17th base of the season. On defense, third baseman JJ Wetherholt made a throwing error. Antico and Torres both had fielding miscues.
Memphis is 64-56 overall, 21-23 in the second half. They are 9.5 games back of Scranton in the IL.
Thursday’s game: vs. Gwinnett, RHP Ian Bedell (0-5, 8.06) vs. JR Ritchie RHP (2-0, 3.21) 6:45 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals lost to the Travelers by 10-6 score on Wednesday. Starter Brycen Mautz pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up five runs on five hits, fanned five and walked one. Mautz took the loss.
Zane Mills relieved Mautz and surrendered two runs in 1 1/3 innings. Leonardo Taveras threw two scoreless innings. Austin Love yielded three insurance runs in the eighth.
Springfield went up in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Joshua Baez. Arkansas answered with a six-run bottom of the inning to take the lead 6-2.
After the Travelers added a run in the fifth, the Cardinals responded with a four-run sixth to cut Arkansas’ lead to 7-6. Chase Davis walked. Jeremy Rivas grounded into a force out, eliminating Davis. Rivas advanced to second on a throwing error. Leonardo Bernal walked. Baez singled to score Rivas. Zach Levenson followed with a three-run home run.
The High-A Chiefs fell to the Dragons by a 2-1 score on Wednesday. Starter Mason Molina pitched four innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits, fanned six and walked three. Molina took the loss.
Dominic Picone relieved Molina and threw two scoreless innings. Jack Findlay hurled a scoreless seventh. Mason Burns tossed a scoreless eighth.
Dayton scored single runs in the first and second to lead 2-0.
Peoria scored their only run in the sixth inning. Jose Cordoba doubled and later came home on a single by Travis Honeyman.
The Chiefs scored one run on nine hits. Deniel Ortiz went 4-for-4, including a double but was unable to score. The offense was 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
Won-Bin Cho stole his 18th base of the season. On defense, Chase Adkison made a throwing error.
Peoria is 44-70 overall, 18-31 in the second half, and is fifth place in the Midwest League West, nine games back of Beloit.
Thursday’s game: at Dayton, Chen-Wei Lin RHP (0-2, 5.09) vs. Jose Montero RHP (5-5, 4.55) 6:05 CT.
The Low-A Cardinals beat the Mets in 10 innings on Wednesday. Starter Andrew Dutkanych pitched three innings, gave up two runs on two hits, struck out three and walked one.
Yadiel Batista relieved Dutkanych and surrendered six runs in 4 1/3 innings. Edwin Nuñez yielded one run in 1 2/3 innings. Sam Brodersen tossed a scoreless 10th to earn the win.
The Mets went up 2-0 in the second inning. The Beach Birds answered in the third with a solo home run by Matthew Miura to cut the lead in half.
St. Lucie added three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 7-1.
Palm Beach scored a run in the home fifth. Miura and Christian Martin walked. Jalin Flores singled to score Miura.
In the sixth, the Cardinals added two runs to lessen the gap to 7-4. Ryan Weingartner walked. Yordalin Pena singled. Miura walked. Martin reached on a fielder’s choice with an error as Weingartner and Pena came home.
Palm Beach made it 7-5 in the seventh. Jose Suarez singled and stole second base. Weingartner walked. Sammy Hernandez plated Suarez on a single.
The Mets extended their lead to 9-5 in the eighth. The Cardinals rallied in the ninth and put up four runs to tie the game. Flores and Suarez walked. Flores advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a passed ball. Hernandez drove in Suarez on a double. Miura walked. Martin plated Hernandez and Miura on a double.
As the game went into the 10th inning. St. Lucie failed to score. In the bottom of the 10th, Rainiel Rodriguez started on second base. Flores hit a two-run home run to walk it off for the Cardinals.
The offense scored 11 runs on nine hits. Flores was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Suarez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Martin had three RBI. Leadoff man Miura drew three walks, homered and scored three times.
Suarez stole two bases. Martin swiped his 20th bag. Weingartner was caught stealing.
On defense, Suarez had an outfield assist at second base. Dutkanych and Batista both picked a runner off first base.
Palm Beach is 56-58 on the season, 24-25 in the second half, and is in third place in the FSL East 9.5 games back of St. Lucie.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Tuesday. TCNs Player of the Day is DSL CF Royelny Strop, who hit for the cycle with eight RBI, including a grand slam, and scored three runs in the Cardinals rout of Colorado on the final day of their season. Other standouts include Ixan Henderson, Jesus Baez, Yordalin Pena and Branneli Franco.
The Triple-A Redbirds were defeated by the Stripers in a 7-1 loss at AutoZone Park on Tuesday, snapping Memphis’ five-game winning streak. Starter Quinn Mathews pitched five innings, gave up two runs on three hits, fanned five and walked one. Mathews took the loss.
Rehabbing St. Louis lefty John King relieved Mathews and surrendered two unearned runs in the sixth. Gerson Moreno threw a scoreless seventh. Osvaldo Berrrios yielded three runs in the eighth. Skylar Hales tossed a scoreless ninth.
Gwinnett scored single runs in the first and the second to lead 2-0.
Memphis scored their only run of the game in the home half of the second. Gavin Collins doubled and came home on a single by Michael Siani.
The Stripers extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth, then put up a three-run eighth to win handily, 7-1.
The Memphis offense scored one run on five hits. No Redbird had multiple hits. The double by Collins was the only extra base hit. The team was 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
On the bases, César Prieto was caught stealing. Playing shortstop, Prieto made two errors, one fielding and one throwing.
Memphis is 64-55 overall, 21-22 in the second half. They are 9.5 games back of Scranton in the IL.

The Cardinals added two runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0. Dakota Harris doubled. Trey Paige singled. Moore plated Harris and Paige on a double.
The High-A Chiefs were routed by the Dragons in a 14-3 blowout on Tuesday. Starter Nate Dohm pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up four runs on three hits. fanned four and walked two. Dohm took the loss.
D.J Carpenter relieved Dohm and threw 2/3 of a scoreless inning. Gerardo Salas yielded eight runs in two innings. Christian Worley allowed two runs in the final three innings.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ryan Campos doubled and scored on a single by Travis Honeyman.
The Dragons answered with three runs in the home first to take a 3-1 lead. Dayton added one run in the third.
The Dragons continued to extend their lead with two runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to lead 12-1. Peoria put up one run in the seventh on a solo home run by Jon Jon Gazdar to cut the lead to 12-2.
Dayton added two more runs in the eighth to widen the gap to 14-2. The Chiefs tacked on one more run in the ninth on a solo home run by Won-Bin Cho for the final score of 14-3.
The Low-A Cardinals fell to the Mets by an 8-5 score at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday. Starter Leonel Sequera pitched four innings, gave up seven runs on eight hits, fanned five and walked three. The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week took the loss.
Hunter Kublick relieved Sequera and surrendered one run in two innings. Zack Showalter hurled two scoreless innings. Alan Reyes tossed a scoreless ninth.
St. Lucie took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Beach Birds tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run by hot-hitting Rainiel Rodriguez. The catcher has hit in nine straight games with three home runs and 10 RBI.
The Mets put up seven runs in the fifth inning to jump to an 8-1 lead. The Cardinals scored two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3. Jonathan Mejia and Sammy Hernandez walked. Yordalin Pena tripled to score both runners.
Palm Beach added two more runs in the eighth to shrink the lead to 8-5. Hernandez reached on catcher interference. Pena followed with a two-run home run.
The Cardinals scored five runs on eight hits. Pena was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jalin Flores was 2-for-5.
Mejia stole two bases. Ryan Weingartner swiped his second bag.
On defense, Pena had an outfield assist at third base. Showalter picked a runner off third base.
Palm Beach is 55-58 on the season, 23-25 in the second half, and is in third place in the FSL East 10.5 games back of St. Lucie.

The Cardinals scored in the first inning on a three-run home run by Royelny Strop. They added five runs in the second to increase the lead to 8-0. Hector Cabrera and Michael Cordero were each hit by a pitch. Kenly Hunter singled. Strop hit a bases clearing triple. Juan Rujano followed with a two-run home run.

The Cardinals extended the lead to 13-0 with five runs in the fifth inning. Sebastian Dos Santos singled. Cabrera was hit by a pitch. Cordero singled. Dos Santos scored on a sac fly by Lucas Takahashi. Hunter singled. Strop followed with a grand slam.
Christian Saez thumped a solo home run in the sixth to increase the lead to 14-0. The Cards added a run in the top of the seventh to make it 15-0. Cordero walked. Hunter doubled. Cordero came home on a wild pitch.
Colorado finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to cut the lead to 15-2.
The Cardinals responded with a four-run eighth inning to widen the lead to 19-2. Saez walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dos Santos and Yeferson Portolatin walked. Cabrera walked and Saez scored. Cordero plated Dos Santos and Portolatin on a double. Strop drove in Cabrera on a double.
The Cardinals scored 19 runs on 13 hits. Strop was 4-for-6, a cycle, with eight RBI and three runs scored. Dos Santos was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cordero was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Hunter was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Rujano had two RBI. Cabrera scored three runs. Saez scored two runs.
On defense, Strop made a fielding error.
The Cardinals are 30-26 on the season and finished in third place in the DSL Southeast, four games back of the Marlins.

For the week, the Cardinals went a dismal 1-5 at home, falling three games under .500. Unlikely Pedro Pagés led the inconsistent offense with a 1.494 OPS. Our history feature highlights rare feats during August in team history.
The St. Louis Cardinals edged the visiting Rockies by a 3-2 score on Monday. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on four hits, struck out three and walked one.
Kyle Leahy relieved Mikolas and threw the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Victor Scott drew a walk and stole second base. He came home on a single by Alec Burleson.
The Rockies scored two runs in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals regained the lead at 3-2 in the eighth inning. Nolan Gorman walked. Thomas Saggese singled. Pinch hitter Brendan Donovan plated both runners with a double.
The Cardinals were blanked by the Rockies by the score of 3-0 on Tuesday. Starter Matthew Liberatore pitched four innings, gave up three runs on four hits, struck out three and walked one. Liberatore took the loss.
Matt Svanson relieved Liberatore and threw three scoreless innings. Jorge Alcalá hurled a scoreless eighth. Ryan Fernandez tossed a scoreless ninth.
Colorado scored twice in the fourth inning and added a run in the fifth to lead 3-0.
St. Louis offense scattered six hits. Brendan Donovan was 2-for-4. A double by Nolan Gorman was the only extra base hit. They were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
The Cardinals played a second one-run game against Colorado but lost this one 6-5. The Cardinals dropped both three-game series with the Rockies, who have won only 34 games so far this season, fewest in MLB by a considerable margin.
Starter Michael McGreevy made a quality start, as he pitched six innings, gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Kyle Leahy relieved McGreevy and surrendered one run in the seventh. Riley O’Brien hurled a scoreless eighth. JoJo Romero yielded two runs in the ninth and took the loss.
The Cardinals took the lead 2-0 in the second inning. Lars Nootbaar and Thomas Saggese singled. Pedro Pagés drove in both runners with a double.
The Rockies cut St. Louis’ lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals answered in the home half of the inning on a solo home run by Nootbaar.
In the top of the fifth, Colorado made it 3-2, but St. Louis again responded in the bottom of the inning, this time with two runs to extend the lead to 5-2. Masyn Winn singled and Alec Burleson followed with a two-run home run.
The Rockies continued to add on with single runs in the sixth and seventh and two in the ninth to take a 6-5 lead. St. Louis failed to respond.
The offense scored five runs on nine hits. Burleson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Pagés was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Nootbaar was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
On the bases, Iván Herrera stole his fifth of the season.
At Busch Stadium, the Cardinals lost to the Yankees by the score of 4-3, their third one run decision of the week. Starter Andre Pallante pitched five innings, gave up four runs on six hits, fanned eight and walked three. Pallante took the loss.
The bullpen was solid but the offense could not recover. Jorge Alcalá relieved Pallante and threw a scoreless sixth. Ryan Fernandez hurled a scoreless seventh. Matt Svanson tossed the final two scoreless innings.
Down 4-0, the Cardinals awakened in the sixth and scored a run. Lars Nootbaar doubled and came home on a single by Masyn Winn.
St. Louis added two in the seventh to bring the score close enough to lose by only one run. Jordan Walker drew a walk and stole second base. Pedro Pagés was hit by a pitch. Victor Scott doubled to score Walker. Pagés came home on a wild pitch.
The offense scored three runs on six hits. No Cardinal had multiple hits.
On the bases, Walker stole his seventh base of the season. On defense, Fernandez made an error on a pickoff attempt.
The Cardinals lost the second game of the series to the Yankees by the score of 12-8. Starter Sonny Gray pitched five innings, gave up six runs on nine hits, fanned seven and walked two. Gray took the loss.
Kyle Leahy relieved Gray and did not record an out. He surrendered three runs before he was replaced by Roddery Muñoz, who yielded three more runs in 1 1/3 innings. Andre Granillo threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings to end the game.
The Yankees took the lead at 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Alec Burleson tripled and scored on a single by Iván Herrera.
St. Louis put up four runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Nolan Gorman walked. Pedro Pagés singled. Victor Scott singled to score Gorman. Masyn Winn followed with a three-run home run.
St. Louis’ lead was brief, as New York came back with one run in the third and three in the fourth to regain the lead, 6-5. They added three more runs in the top of the sixth.
In the home sixth, the Cardinals crept closer at 9-7. Jordan Walker doubled and Gorman followed with a two-run home run.
The Yankees widened the gap with three runs in the seventh for a 12-7 lead. The Cardinals tried to rally in the ninth but had only a solo home run by Pagés.
The offense scored eight runs on 12 hits. Winn was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Pagés was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Alec Burleson was 3-for-5. Gorman had two RBI and two runs scored.
The Cardinals fell to the Yankees in the final game of the series as they were swept to conclude their homestand. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched five innings, gave up three runs on four hits, struck out one and walked five.
Kyle Leahy relieved Mikolas and surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings. Riley O’Brien threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. JoJo Romero yielded four unearned runs in 2/3 of an inning as second baseman Thomas Saggese committed two costly errors. Jorge Alcalá secured the final out of the ninth.
The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half. Iván Herrera reached on an error. Jordan Walker drew a walk. Thomas Saggese doubled to score both runners.
The Cardinals tied the game in the fifth. Lars Nootbaar singled and advanced on an error. He came home on a single by Alec Burleson.
St. Louis took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Yohel Pozo. The Yankees tied it up in the seventh.
The wheels came off the bus for the Cardinals in the ninth as the Yankees put up four unanswered runs to win, 8-4.
The Cardinals scored four runs on seven hits. Nootbaar was 3-for-4. Saggese was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
On defense, Saggese made two errors, one fielding and one throwing. Pozo had a passed ball.
The Big Picture
The Cardinals had another terrible week, winning only one of six games at home. They were 1-2 against the Rockies and were swept by the Yankees.
St. Louis remains mired in fourth place, out of reach of the Division title, 18 games behind Milwaukee and four games behind the third place Reds. They are five games out of the final Wild Card.
The offense remains inconsistent and lacks an inability to rise to the occasion. Even brief comebacks fade under pressure. The recent injuries to Donovan, Contreras, and now Victor Scott hasn’t helped the situation. Arenado is still out as well, though he did not perform well this season offensively anyway.
The top performers by OPS for the week were Pedro Pagés (1.494), and Alec Burleson (.902). Close behind are the now injured Victor Scott (.899), and Lars Nootbaar (.842). At the bottom are Iván Herrera (.448), Willson Contreras (.333, and out with injury the last four games), and Jordan Walker (.301).
The starting pitching has not been good at all. Only Miles Mikolas had an ERA below 4.00 for the week (3.86) and that is in two starts, with the last one on Sunday not being particularly good. Sonny Gray (10.80) was awful against the Yankees. Andre Pallante (7.20) and Matthew Liberatore (6.75) were also subpar. Michael McGreevy (4.50) was okay.
Even the normally good defense is showing warts. There were some bad throws and grounders being booted on the infield.
At this point, the best that can be hoped for is to play out the remainder of the season with some measure of success (.500 at least?) and try to stay out of last place. The Pirates appear to have that position locked up, but stranger things have happened.
The Cardinals head out on a road trip to Florida to play the Marlins and the Rays. The team already lost a series to the Marlins in St. Louis, so there is no guarantee the road trip won’t be as bad as the homestand just was.

Injury Report
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson has had several setbacks in his rehab. It was reported several weeks ago that Thompson was set to resume his throwing program. Whether and/or when Thompson may return to the big league roster is unknown.
LHP John King was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 30. Left oblique strain. Over the weekend, King began a rehab stint with Memphis.
3B Nolan Arenado was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 1. Right shoulder strain. The third baseman has been bothered by shoulder pain for some time. Arenado has reported to the Cardinals spring training facility for a strengthening program. The latest update is that Arenado is not expected to return to the roster during the upcoming road trip to Florida. When he will return to the roster (if at all) is yet to be determined.
2B Brendan Donovan (left foot and groin). Donovan last played on Wednesday against the Rockies, reportedly having foot problems along with the previously reported groin issues. The team is attempting to avoid an IL stint. Donovan was not in the lineup for Sunday’s final game against the Yankees.
1B Willson Contreras has been out of the lineup for three consecutive games due to a contusion suffered when hit on his left foot by a pitch in Tuesday’s game against the Rockies. He tested the foot on Saturday for a possible return to the lineup but was not in the lineup on Sunday as anticipated.
CF Victor Scott suffered an ankle sprain on Saturday night while attempting to catch an Aaron Judge home run. He stayed in the game for a short time but came out in the sixth inning. Scott was put on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, August 17, replaced by Nathan Church on the roster.
Looking Ahead
The Cardinals are starting a road trip to Florida, beginning with a three-game series at the Marlins Monday, August 18 through Wednesday, and ending with a three-game set at the Tampa Bay Rays. The expected pitchers vs. the Marlins are Matthew Liberatore on Monday, Michael McGreevy on Tuesday and Andre Pallante on Wednesday.
The Rays series begins on Thursday, August 21, and ends on Sunday, August 24, with an off day in the middle on Saturday, August 23. The game was moved off the Saturday date due to a conflict with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers pre-season football game, which will be played at Raymond James Field across the street from Steinbrenner Field.
The team returns briefly to St. Louis after the road trip for four games with the Pirates beginning Monday, August 25. They end the month of August with three games in Cincinnati against the Reds.

This week’s Blast from the Past returns to a previous series highlighting rare feats performed by former or current Cardinals during the history of the franchise during a specific time period.
This installment will cover a larger period, from August 1 through August 17.
A rare feat is defined as one of the following: (1) a pitcher or pitchers throwing a no-hitter; (2) A batter hitting for the cycle, which is hitting at least one single, one double, one triple, and one home run in a single game; (3) A batter recording six hits in one game; (4) a player, either a position player or a pitcher, hitting a home run in their first major league at bat; and (5) a player hitting three or more home runs in a single game.
For each rare feat, the type of feat, the date it occurred, and details of each occurrence are listed below.
In this installment, all rare feats occurred in games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. All three highlighted individuals later became Cardinals Hall of Famers and two have been enshrined in Cooperstown (only Bill White remains).

August 5, 1931 – On this date, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field, first baseman Jim Bottomley went 6-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored in a 16-2 win over the Pirates.
The sequence of hits went as follows: In the first inning, Bottomley singled and was left stranded; he hit an RBI single to left in the third; Bottomley singled and scored in an eight run fifth inning; he doubled and scored in the sixth; a single in the seventh scored two runs; his final hit was a single in the ninth, but he was again left on base.
Bill White
August 14, 1960 – On this day, Cardinals first baseman Bill White hit for the cycle in a 9-4 loss to the Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader at Forbes Field.
In the first inning, White hit a triple to center but was stranded. White doubled to right in the third and was left on base again. He hit an RBI single to center in the fifth, scoring Curt Flood. In the seventh, White hit a solo home run to right.

August 14, 1971 – On this day, Bob Gibson pitched the only no-hitter of his career in an 11-0 shutout of the Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium.
Gibson of course pitched all nine innings, striking out 10 Pirates and walking three. His final hitter was Willie Stargell, who struck out looking. Gibson had two innings in which he faced five batters. He faced only three batters in five frames.
The number of pitches thrown was not recorded. Gibson’s Game Score was 94.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach catcher Rainiel Rodriguez, homered and drove in three. Other standouts include Andy Yerzy, Matt Lloyd, Josh Kross and Jalin Flores.
On Friday in Charlotte, the Redbirds defeated the Knights in extra innings by the score of 7-5. Starter Ian Bedell pitched three innings, gave up three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked two.
Oddanier Mosqueda relieved Bedell and surrendered two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Zack Weiss threw two scoreless innings. Nick Raquet hurled 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Anthony Veneziano tossed the final two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Leading off the game, third baseman JJ Wetherholt hit a solo home run. Charlotte tied the game in the home half of the first.
The Redbirds regained the lead 3-1 in the second. Matt Lloyd singled and scored on Andy Yerzy’s home run. The Knights knotted it up again in the third.
Memphis scored again in the top of the fourth to lead 4-3. César Prieto doubled and came home on a single by Bryan Torres. Charlotte answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-4.
Lloyd hit a solo home run in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
The game eventually went into extras, and in the 10th, the Redbirds put up two runs to lead 7-5. Nathan Church started the inning at second base. Matt Koperniak reached on a fielder’s choice and Church scored on a throwing error. Koperniak came home on a single by Prieto.
The offense scored seven runs on 13 hits. Yerzy was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lloyd was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Torres was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Prieto was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Koperniak was 2-for-5.
On the bases, Yerzy stole his first base. Prieto swiped his 12th bag. Koperniak was picked off first base.
On defense, Yerzy had a passed ball.
Memphis is 62-54 overall, 21-22 in the second half. The Redbirds are nine games back of Scranton and Syracuse who are tied for first place in the IL.
Saturday’s game: at Charlotte, Aaron Wilkerson RHP (5-3, 3.77) vs. Duncan Davitt RHP (0-3, 4.88) 5:05 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals fell to the Wind Surge by a 7-2 score at Hammons Field on Friday. Starter Cade Winquest six innings, gave up four runs on eight hits, fanned four and walked one. Winquest took the loss.
Zane Mills relieved Winquest and surrendered one run in two innings. Jack Ralston yielded two runs in the ninth.
Wichita took a 3-0 lead in the third inning and added a run in the top of the sixth.
Springfield answered with two runs in the home sixth. Brody Moore reached on an error and stole second base. Jeremy Rivas drove in Moore on a single. Leonardo Bernal plated Rivas on a double.
The High-A Chiefs were edged by the Captains in a 6-5 road loss on Friday. Starter Braden Davis pitched four innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits, fanned eight and walked three.
D.J. Carpenter relieved Davis and surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings. Zeke Wood yielded two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Dominic Picone allowed one run in the eighth and took the loss.
Lake County took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Peoria scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead 3-2. Deniel Ortiz walked. Andrew Sojka singled. Josh Kross followed with a three-run home run.
The Chiefs added two runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-2. Sojka doubled. Kross was hit by a pitch. Ian Petrutz singled. Won-Bin Cho walked and Sojka scored. Kross came home on a double play by Anyelo Encarnacion.
The Captains cut the lead to 5-4 with two runs in the home sixth. Lake County added on with single runs in the seventh and eighth to prevail 6-5.
The Chiefs scored five runs on nine hits. Kross had three RBI and two runs scored. Sojka was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ryan Campos was 2-for-4. Petrutz was 2-for-4.
On the bases, Jon Jon Gazdar stole his 16th of the season. Cho swiped his 17th bag.
On defense, Campos had a passed ball.
Peoria is 43-67 overall, 17-28 in the second half, and is fifth place in the Midwest League West, eight games back of Beloit.

The Beach Birds went up in the first inning on a two-run home run by Rainiel Rodriguez. Palm Beach added a run in the third as Jalin Flores singled and scored on a triple by Jose Cordoba.
In the top of the fourth, Bradenton cut the lead to 3-1. The Cardinals answered with three runs in the home half of the inning. Ryan Weingartner singled. Yordalin Pena grounded into a force out with Weingartner out at second. Matthew Miura singled. Jack Gurevitch walked. Rodriguez walked and Pena scored. Flores doubled to plate Miura and Gurevitch.
Palm Beach widened the lead to 7-1 in the fifth. Chase Heath singled. Weingartner walked. Pena eliminated Weingartner again on a force out. Heath came home on a force out by Miura.
The Marauders added two in the sixth and two in the ninth to bring the final score to 7-5.
The Cardinals scored seven runs on eight hits. Flores was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Rodriguez had three RBI. Miura scored two runs.
Miura stole his fifth base of the season. He was also picked off first base.
On defense, Flores made a fielding error.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield’s Ixan Henderson, pitched 6 2/3 one hit, one run innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth. The lefty fanned eight and walked one. Other standouts include Blaze Jordan, César Prieto, José Fermín, Anyelo Encarnacion and Jalin Flores.
The Triple-A Redbirds routed the Knights by a 14-5 score in Charlotte on Wednesday. Starter Quinn Mathews pitched just three innings, gave up three runs on six hits, fanned seven and walked three. 42 of his 79 pitches went for strikes.
Zack Weiss relieved Mathews and surrendered one run in two innings to earn the win. Anthony Veneziano, Oddanier Mosqueda and Gerson Moreno each hurled a scoreless inning. Skylar Hales allowed one run in the ninth.
Memphis went up 1-0 in the first inning. JJ Wetherholt walked and stole second base. José Fermín doubled to score Wetherholt.
Charlotte took a 3-1 lead in the third. The Redbirds answered with five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Nathan Church doubled. Jimmy Crooks singled. Blaze Jordan followed with a three-run home run. Matt Koperniak hit a solo home run. César Prieto singled and scored on a double by Andy Yerzy.
The Knights scored one run in the home fourth to cut the lead to 6-4. In the sixth, Memphis again put up the crooked number with a four-run burst to lead 10-4. Koperniak and Prieto singled. An error and a wild pitch scored Koperniak. Michael Siani drove in Prieto on a single. Fermín hit a two-run home run.
The Redbirds put up another four spot in the ninth to extend the lead to 14-4. Wetherholt doubled. Fermín walked. Jordan singled to plate Wetherholt. Koperniak walked. Prieto cleared the loaded bases with a double.
Charlotte added one run in the home half of the ninth to bring the final score to 14-5.

The Double-A Cardinals beat the Wind Surge by the score of 5-1 at Hammons Field on Wednesday. It was first-place Springfield’s seventh consecutive victory.
Starter Ixan Henderson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The left hander pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up one run on one hit, fanned eight and walked one to earn his eighth win.
Austin Love relieved Henderson and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Michael Watson tossed a scoreless ninth.
Springfield went up 3-0 in the second inning. Jeremy Rivas reached on catcher interference. Dakota Harris advanced the runner on a sac bunt. Ramon Mendoza walked. Brody Moore plated Rivas and Mendoza on a double. Moore scored on a single by Chase Davis.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth to increase the lead to 4-0. Mendoza doubled. Davis singled to plate Mendoza.
Springfield extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Leonardo Bernal walked. Zach Levenson singled. Bernal and Levenson executed a double steal. Rivas drove in Bernal on a single.
Wichita got on the board in the seventh with their only hit off Henderson, a solo home run.
The Cardinals scored five runs on eight hits. Bernal was 2-for-3. Moore had two RBI.

The High-A Chiefs fell to the Captains in a painful 9-7 road walkoff loss on Wednesday. Starter Mason Molina pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked five.
Tanner Jacobson relieved Molina and surrendered one run in 2 1/3 innings. Benjamin Arias threw two scoreless innings. Jawilme Ramirez yielded six runs, one earned in the final 2/3 of an inning and took the loss.
Lake County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Peoria took a 2-1 lead in the third. Travis Honeyman doubled. New arrival Andrew Sojka doubled to score Honeyman. Ian Petrutz walked. Sojka stole second base. Anyelo Encarnacion plated Sojka on a single.
The Captains tied the game in the home third and added a run in the fifth to lead 3-2.
The Chiefs put up two runs in the seventh to regain the lead at 4-3. Chase Adkison doubled and scored on a double by Petrutz. Brayden Jobert drove in Petrutz on a double.
Peoria scored three more runs in the eighth to increase the lead to 7-3. Deniel Ortiz walked and stole second base. Sojka walked. Adkison singled and Ortiz was thrown out at home. Petrutz singled and Sojka came home. Adkison and Petrutz scored on a single by Encarnacion.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ramirez and the Chiefs defense unraveled as Encarnacion and Jobert both made fielding errors. Lake County posted a six-run frame that included a solo home run and a grand slam to walk off the 9-7 win.
The Peoria offense scored seven runs on 13 hits. Encarnacion was 4-for-5 with two RBI. Petrutz was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Adkison was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sojka scored two runs.
On the bases, Sojka stole his first base. Encarnacion swiped his fourth bag. Ortiz stole his third base for Peoria. Jesus Baez was picked off and caught stealing.

Bradenton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Beach Birds tied the game in the fourth. Christian Martin doubled. Ryan Weingartner walked. Luis Pino singled to score Martin.

In the 11th, the Marauders scored on a ground rule double off Steinbaugh to lead 6-5. The Cardinals were unable to answer.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-2 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation Player of the Day, DSL 2B Cristofer Lebron, was 3-for-5 with a walk, five RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Bryan Torres, Zach Levenson, Leonel Sequera and Juan Pablo Cabrera.
The Triple-A Redbirds fell to the Knights by a 13-6 score in Charlotte on Tuesday. Starter Curtis Taylor pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up nine runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked two. Taylor took the loss.
Osvaldo Berrios surrendered four runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Alex Cornwell yielded one run in the final 2 1/3 innings.
Memphis took the lead in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by JJ Wetherholt. Charlotte tied the game in the home half of the inning.
The Redbirds put up two runs in the top of the second to regain the lead 3-1. Blaze Jordan singled. Matt Lloyd doubled. Jordan scored on a ground out by Bryan Torres. Mike Antico singled to score Lloyd.
The Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again. They scored three in the third and two in the fourth to increase the lead to 8-3.
In the top of the sixth, Memphis scored two runs to shrink the lead to 8-5. Jimmy Crooks singled and scored on a double by Jordan. Michael Siani singled. Torres plated Jordan on a single.
Charlotte responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to widen the lead to 12-5. They added their final tally in the seventh.
The Redbirds put up one more run in the eighth to cut the lead to 13-6. Michael Siani reached on fielding error and advanced to third base. He scored on a ground out by Torres.
The offense scored six runs on 10 hits. Jordan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Wetherholt was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Torres had three RBI.
On defense, Crooks had a passed ball.
Memphis is 59-54 overall, 18-22 in the second half. They are 12 games back of IL leader Syracuse.
Wednesday’s game: at Charlotte, Quinn Mathews LHP (3-4, 3.63) vs. Martin Pérez LHP (0-0, 6.75) 6:04 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals defeated the Wind Surge by a 4-2 score at Hammons Field on Tuesday. In his Springfield debut, former MSU Bear, Brandt Thompson pitched three innings, gave up one run on one hit, and struck out one.
Hunter Hayes relieved Thompson and surrendered one run in 2 1/3 innings. In his return to Springfield from Memphis, Jack Ralston threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Luis Gastelum tossed the final two perfect innings with five strikeouts or his seventh save.
Springfield took the lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by new arrival Zach Levenson. Wichita answered with one run in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game.
The Cardinals broke the tie with a run in the sixth. Jeremy Rivas and Dakota Harris singled. Trey Paige advanced the runners with a sac bunt. Rivas scored on a sac fly by Graysen Tarlow.
Springfield extended the lead to 4-2 in the eighth. Harris and Paige walked. Tarlow plated Harris on a single.
The High-A Chiefs were blanked by the Captains by the score of 8-0 on Tuesday. Starter Nate Dohm pitched two innings, gave up one run on one hit, fanned five and walked three and took the loss.
All four Peoria pitchers were scored upon. Dominic Picone relieved Dohm and surrendered one run in two innings. Darlin Saladin yielded four runs in three innings. Zeke Wood allowed two runs in the eighth.
Lake County went up 2-0 in the third, added two runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final score of 8-0.
The Peoria offense scattered six hits. They were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. A double by Deniel Ortiz was the only extra base hit.
Won-Bin Cho stole his 16th base of the season but was also caught stealing.
Peoria is 43-64 overall, 17-25 in the second half, and is fifth place in the Midwest League West, seven games back of Beloit.
Wednesday’s game: at Lake County, Mason Molina LHP (0-0, 4.50) vs. Jackson Humphries LHP (1-8, 4.12) 11:05 am CT.
Three pitchers completed the shutout with an inning each – Hunter Kublick, Edwin Nuñez and Jack Findlay.
The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Raniel Rodriguez walked and later scored on a fielder’s choice.
Palm Beach added four runs in the second to lead 5-0. Jose Cordoba walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Jack Gurevitch was hit by a pitch. Jonathan Mejia singled and Cordoba scored. Rodriguez drove in Gurevitch on a double. Mejia scored on a fielder’s choice by Jose Suarez. Rodriguez came home on a force out by Matthew Miura.
Branneli Franco relieved Chinchilla and surrendered one unearned run in the final two innings.
The Cardinals went up 6-0 in the first inning. Kenly Hunter walked. Royelny Strop singled. Juan Rujano walked. Hunter scored on a sac fly by Yaxson Lucena. Cristofer Lebron doubled to plate Strop and Rujano. Lebron advanced to third on a balk. Sebastian Dos Santos walked and stole second base. Lebron came home on a balk and Dos Santos advanced to third. Juan Pablo Cabrera drove in Dos Santos on a triple. Yeferson Portolatin walked and stole second. Cabrera scored on a throwing error.
The Cardinals added a run in the second. Strop doubled and later scored on a sac fly by Dos Santos. The third inning was a six-run effort once more. Portolatin doubled and Hunter singled. Portolatin scored on a passed ball. Strop plated Hunter on a single. Strop was caught stealing. Rujano walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Lucena reached on an error. Lebron drove in Rujano on a single. Christian Saez plated Lucena and Lebron on a single. Saez scored on a single by Cabrera.
The Mets Blue scored their only run in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals answered with five more runs In the home half of the inning. Cabrera doubled. Hunter and Strop walked. Cabrera came home on a balk. Hunter and Strop scored on a single by Rujano. Lucena doubled. Lebron drove in Rujano and Lucena on a single.
The offense scored 18 runs on 16 hits. Lebron was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Cabrera was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Saez was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Strop was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Rujano had two RBI and three runs scored. Hunter scored three runs and Lucena scored twice.
For the first time this season, every batter in the Cardinals lineup had at least one hit.
On the bases, Dos Santos stole his 10th base of the season. Portolatin swiped his 19th bag. Hunter stole his 22nd base. Strop was caught stealing.
On defense, Strop made a throwing error and had an outfield assist at third base.
The Cardinals are 27-24 on the season and are in second place in the DSL Southeast, six games back of the Marlins.

Despite selling at the deadline, the Cardinals won series over the playoff contending Dodgers and Cubs. Sonny Gray pitched like an ace, allowing just three runs in 14 innings on six hits, two walks and 15 strikeouts. Our history feature is debuts during this week in team history.
The St. Louis Cardinals edged the Los Angeles Dodgers by a 3-2 score on Monday at Dodger Stadium. Starter Sonny Gray pitched seven innings, gave up one run on one hit, fanned eight and walked one.
Riley O’Brien surrendered one run in the eighth and earned the win. JoJo Romero tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The Cardinals took the lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Masyn Winn. The Dodgers tied the game in the fourth.
St. Louis regained the lead in the eighth on a solo home run by Iván Herrera. Los Angeles tied the score again with a run in the home eighth.
The Cardinals added a run in the ninth to lead 3-2. Willson Contreras singled. Garrett Hampson pinch ran. Lars Nootbaar singled. Yohel Pozo singled and Hampson scored.
The Cardinals put up three runs on seven hits. Herrera was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Cardinals fell to the Dodgers by a 12-6 score on Tuesday. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched three innings, gave up five runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked one. Mikolas took the loss.
Matt Svanson threw two scoreless innings of relief. Gordon Graceffo hurled a scoreless sixth. Ryan Fernandez surrendered three runs in 1/3 of an inning. Andre Granillo yielded four runs in the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Dodgers went up 2-0 in the first inning. The Cardinals tied the game in the second. Willson Contreras reached on an error. Nolan Gorman followed with a two-run home run.
Los Angeles posted a three-run third to take the lead at 5-2. In the top of the seventh, St. Louis added a run to cut the lead to 5-3. Nolan Gorman and Yohel Pozo singled. Brendan Donovan grounded into a force with Pozo out at second. Iván Herrera singled to score Gorman.
The Dodgers responded with five runs in the home seventh to expand their lead to 10-3. The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the eighth on a solo home run by Contreras to shrink the lead to 10-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers went up 12-4. In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals rallied for two runs to bring the final score to 12-6. Pozo walked. Thomas Saggese was hit by a pitch. Herrera drew a walk. Pozo scored on a wild pitch and Saggese and Herrera advanced. Alec Burleson plated Saggese on a sac fly.
The offense scored six runs on nine hits. Gorman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Contreras was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lars Nootbaar was 2-for-4.
On the bases, Brendan Donovan was caught stealing.
The Cardinals beat the Dodgers to take the three-game series on Wednesday. The Cardinals also won the season home and away series over the Dodgers. Starter Matthew Liberatore pitched four innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits, struck out one and walked one.
Kyle Leahy relieved Liberatore and threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings. JoJo Romero hurled a scoreless inning to earn the win. Riley O’Brien tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his first save.
In the top of the third, the Cardinals took a brief 1-0 lead. Jordan Walker singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Brendan Donovan.
The Dodgers took the lead with a two-run frame third. They added a run in the fourth to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Cardinals cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth. Iván Herrera walked. Alec Burleson singled and Herrera advanced to third. Herrera scored on a ground out by Lars Nootbaar.
St. Louis scored two runs in the eighth to take the lead 4-3. Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn singled. Jordan Walker plated both runners on a single with a throwing error.

The Cardinals blanked the Cubs 5-0 in the opener of a weekend series at Busch Stadium. Starter Michael McGreevy pitched six scoreless innings, allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one to earn his fourth win.

The Cardinals scored five runs on 13 hits. Walker was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Pagés was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Burleson was 3-for-4. Winn was 2-for-4. Saggese was 2-for-4.
The Cardinals were routed by the Cubs by a 9-1 score on Saturday. Starter Andre Pallante made what he described as the “worst start of my career”. The right hander pitched 1 2/3 innings, gave up six runs on seven hits, and walked one. Pallante took the loss.
Gordon Graceffo relieved Pallante and surrendered two runs in 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Fernandez yielded one run in three innings. Roddery Muñoz tossed the final two scoreless innings.
The Cubs scored early and often, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning and adding four runs in the second. In each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings the Cubs put up one run to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Cardinals scored their only run of the game in the sixth. Lars Nootbaar doubled, advanced to third on a fly out by Iván Herrera and scored on an Alec Burleson ground out.
The offense scored one run on seven hits. Doubles by Nootbaar and Herrera were the only extra base hits. The offense went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
On defense, Jordan Walker and Yohel Pozo each made a throwing error.
The Cardinals edged the Cubs in a 3-2 win on Sunday evening at Busch Stadium to take the series. Starter Sonny Gray pitched seven innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits, fanned seven and walked one to earn his 11th win of the season.
Riley O’Brien relieved Gray and threw 2/3 of a scoreless inning. JoJo Romero tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his third save.

The Big Picture
The Cardinals had their best week in quite a while. They took two of three from both the Dodgers and the Cubs for a 4-2 record, pulling just over .500 again for the season. The team remains in fourth place in the NL Central, 14 games back of the Brewers and 3.5 games back of the final Wild Card berth.
The Brewers apparently are unable to lose, and the Division has been out of reach for some time. The Cardinals are currently two games back of the third place Reds, an achievable target, and eight games back of the second place Cubs, an unlikely goal.
The offense has improved some, though its mercurial nature could place them back where they had been prior without much effort. That is a pessimistic outlook no doubt, but one that is backed up by evidence. Nevertheless, one can remain hopeful.
To keep things in perspective, however, the last time the Cardinals swept a series, and in fact the last time they won any three games in a row, was late June in Cleveland. St. Louis’ last sweep at home was Memorial Day weekend vs. Arizona.
So, stringing together any kind of winning streak, even a modest one, would be a welcome change in course.
The top offensive performers for the week by OPS are Pedro Pagés (1.250), Nolan Gorman (1.012), and Jordan Walker (.950). Close behind is Willson Contreras (.889). At the bottom are Alec Burleson (.457) and Brendan Donovan (.450). Donovan has been in a slump for the last month and missed the final two games of the Cubs series with a left groin issue. Burleson continues to get everyday playing time over other outfielders, ostensibly because manager Oliver Marmol believes he has earned it. His recent numbers do not bear that out (.686 OPS since the break), so the manager’s reasoning is a little puzzling.
The pitching has demonstrated its usual inconsistency again this week. Sonny Gray (1.29) and Michael McGreevy (0.00) had the best outings. Miles Mikolas (15.00) and Andre Pallante (32.40) had the worst. Matthew Liberatore (4.50) was okay.
The bullpen has been fine, other than a couple of hiccups from Andre Granillo (21.60) and Ryan Fernandez (10.80). It appears the closer role after the departure of Ryan Helsley has fallen to Riley O’Brien and JoJo Romero, at least in the short term.
The coming week brings series with the Rockies and the Yankees to end the homestand. While the struggling Rockies, the worst team in MLB, may seem like a pushover, they were definitely not when the Cardinals lost their recent series in Denver. The Cardinals have had some success against the Yankees the last few years, but this offense has been so unpredictable and the pitching has not been strong, so anything can happen.

8/4 The Cardinals claimed LHP Anthony Veneziano off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned him to Memphis.
8/4 The Dodgers claimed 1B Luken Baker off outright waivers.
8/7 The Cardinals claimed RHP Jorge Alcalá off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
8/10 The Cardinals optioned RHP Gordon Graceffo to the Memphis Redbirds as they activated Alcalá.
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson has had several setbacks in his rehab. It was reported several weeks ago that Thompson was set to resume his throwing program. When Thompson may return to the big league roster is unknown.
LHP John King was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 30. Left oblique strain. King sustained the injury on July 29. King threw a bullpen on August 7 at 70% intensity and threw a full effort bullpen on August 9. His rehab assignment with the Memphis Redbirds will begin on Tuesday, August 12 assuming no setbacks.
3B Nolan Arenado was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 1. Right shoulder strain. The third baseman has been bothered by shoulder pain for some time. Arenado has reported to the Cardinals spring training facility for a strengthening program expected to last 7-10 days. Following that Arenado will attempt baseball activities at full speed. The timing of his return to the roster is to be determined.
2B Brendan Donovan was a late scratch from Saturday’s lineup with the Cubs due to left groin tightness. He was not in the lineup for Sunday’s game, either.
In the 18 games since his All-Star Game appearance, Donovan has been struggling, with a line of .188/.260/.261/.521.
The homestand continues with three games against the Rockies beginning Monday. Miles Mikolas is the probable pitcher for Monday’s game followed by Matthew Liberatore on Tuesday, and Michael McGreevy on Wednesday.
The homestand ends with a weekend series with the Yankees.
The Cardinals leave for a road trip to Florida, beginning with three at the Marlins beginning Monday, August 18, and ending with three at the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays series begins on Thursday, August 21, and ends on Monday, August 24, with an off day in the middle on Sunday, August 23. The game was moved off the Saturday date due to a conflict with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers pre-season football game, which will be played at the same complex on that day. The Buccaneers play their games at Raymond James Field across the street from Steinbrenner Field.
The team returns briefly to St. Louis after the road trip to play four with the Pirates beginning Monday, August 25. They end the month of August with three games in Cincinnati with the Reds.

For each player, the date of his debut, the game, his performance that day and any other interesting/relevant details of the debut are noted.
August 6, 1983 – On this day, RHP Danny Cox made his major league debut with the Cardinals. Cox started against the Phillies at Busch Stadium in a game that went 11 innings. The Cardinals lost, 1-0.
Cox pitched 10 scoreless innings but received a no-decision. He allowed seven hits, struck out eight and walked two. Cox opposed Phillies starter Steve Carlton, who pitched one fewer inning than Cox.

August 8, 2018 – On this date, OF Adolis Garcia made his major league debut with the Cardinals in a 7-1 win over the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.
Garcia started the game in center and hit eighth. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and moved to right field in the eighth inning.
Garcia collected his first major league hit two days later, on August 10 in a 7-0 win over the Royals at Busch Stadium. Garcia pinch hit in the sixth inning and remained in the game in right field. Garcia’s hit was a single to center in the eighth inning.
August 9, 2005 – On this day in 2005, RHP Anthony Reyes made his major league debut in 10-3 win over the Brewers at Millier Park. Reyes pitched 6 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked one. One of two runs was a solo home run by Bill Hall.
Reyes was replaced with one out in the seventh by Randy Flores. Reyes’ last season in St. Louis was 2008, when pitched out of the bullpen, was optioned to Triple-A in May and traded on July 26 to the Cleveland Indians.

August 10, 2016 – On this date, RHP Alex Reyes made his major league debut in an 11-9 loss to the Reds at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals’ long-time number one prospect pitched out of the bullpen and entered in the ninth inning. Reyes struck out his first hitter, Adam Duvall, then retired the next two batters on ground outs.
Reyes’ once-promising career was derailed by frequent injuries. He never threw a pitch in 2022, as he went on the injured list in spring training and subsequently had season-ending shoulder surgery. In 2021, he gave up the game winning home run to the Dodgers’ Chris Taylor in the NL Wild Card game, ending the Cardinals postseason hopes. That was his last official pitch thrown as a professional.
Ironically, the Dodgers signed Reyes to a one-year contract for 2023. He once again required shoulder surgery and did not appear in a game for the Dodgers at any level.

Jack Ralston relieved Rajcic, surrendered the first three runs of the game in the seventh and took the loss. Zack Weiss yielded one run in the eighth to make it 4-0. Osvaldo Berrios tossed a scoreless ninth.
Memphis scattered four hits. César Prieto was 2-for-3. His double was the only extra base hit. José Fermín and Matt Koperniak singled. The offense was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
Fermín stole his 20th base of the season.

Out of the pen, Tyler Bradt, Hunter Hayes and Luis Gastelum tossed a scoreless inning each as Gastelum earned his sixth save.
Springfield went up 2-0 in the second inning. Ramon Mendoza walked. Trey Paige forced Mendoza out at second. Miguel Ugueto singled. Brody Moore walked. Darlin Moquete reached on a fielder’s choice as Paige scored and Ugueto also came home on a fielding error.
The Cardinals scored their two runs on six hits, all singles. No Cardinal had multiples.
Leonardo Bernal stole his 11th base of the season. Joshua Baez swiped his 24th bag.
Springfield is 67-39 overall, 24-13 in the second half and is in first place in the Texas League North.
Saturday’s game: at San Antonio, Cade Winquest RHP (1-0, 1.76) vs. Jared Kollar RHP (1-5, 5.59) 7:05 CT.
The High-A Chiefs blanked the Timber Rattlers in a 7-0 rout on Friday at Dozer Park.
Starter Braden Davis pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Davis allowed one hit, struck out four and walked six to earn his second High-A win.
Jawilme Ramirez relieved Davis and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Mason Burns tossed a scoreless ninth.
Peoria went up 3-0 in the second inning. Travis Honeyman and Josh Kross singled. Ian Petrutz reached on a fielder’s choice and all runners were safe on a throwing error. Honeyman scored on a passed ball. Brayden Jobert doubled to plate Kross and Petrutz.

Alan Reyes relieved Odle and surrendered three runs in two innings. Sam Brodersen yielded one run in the final two innings.
The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jack Gurevitch doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Dunedin took a 4-1 lead in the second. Palm Beach answered with a run in the third. Sammy Hernandez walked and stole second base. Rainiel Rodriguez singled to score Hernandez.
After a long rain delay in the third inning, the Blue Jays widened their lead to 8-2 with a four-run fifth.
The Cardinals scored two runs on four hits. Gurevitch was 2-for-3.
On the bases, Hernandez stole his 10th base of the season. On defense, Rodriguez picked a runner off third base.
Palm Beach is 51-53 on the season, 19-20 in the second half, and is in second place in the FSL East, nine games behind St. Lucie.

Friday’s Game 2 at Dunedin was not played due to weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, August 9th starting at 4 p.m. ET with Game 2 to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. Both will be seven innings.

The Cardinals beat the Tigers 1 by an 8-6 score on Friday. Starter Xavier Cruz pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up one run on two hits, fanned four and walked four.
Beiker Rodriguez relieved Cruz and surrendered two runs, one earned, in 1 1/3 innings and earned the win. Ricardo Fernandez yielded two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Jarol Baez threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Jesus Garcia allowed one run in the final 1 1/3 innings but still received his second save.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 in the first inning. Yeferson Portolatin walked and stole second. Cristofer Lebron walked. Sebastian Dos Santos was hit by a pitch. Juan Pablo Cabrera walked and Portolatin scored. Brayan Amoroso singled to plate Lebron and Dos Santos.
The Tigers scored one run in the top of the second. The Cardinals answered with a run in the home second to extend the lead to 4-1. Lucas Takahashi walked and stole second base. Portolatin reached on a fielder’s choice with Takahashi out at third. Juan Rujano drove in Portolatin on a double.
The Cardinals made it 5-1 in the third. Dos Santos walked and later scored on a throwing error. The Tigers put up two runs in the top of the fourth to shrink the lead to 5-3.
Thanks to wildness by Tigers pitching, the Cardinals added three runs without a hit in the home fourth to widen the lead to 8-3. Lebron walked. Dos Santos was hit by a pitch. Cabrera walked. Lebron came home on a wild pitch. Michael Cordero walked. Takahashi walked and Dos Santos scored. Cabrera scored on a walk by Kenly Hunter.
The Tigers added two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to bring the final score to 8-6.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-0 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Peoria right fielder Won-Bin Cho, was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, Curtis Taylor, Brandt Thompson, Graysen Tarlow, Leonardo Bernal, Noah Mendlinger and Jose Suarez.
The Triple-A Redbirds defeated the Bulls by a 3-1 margin at AutoZone Park on Wednesday.
Continuing his strong season, starter Curtis Taylor pitched seven innings, gave up one run on three hits, struck out three and walked two to earn his seventh win.
Nick Raquet relieved Taylor and threw a scoreless eighth. Chris Roycroft tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save.
Memphis took the lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Andy Yerzy. They added a run in the fourth as César Prieto walked and later came home on a single by Matt Lloyd.
Durham scored their only run in the top of the seventh. The Redbirds answered with a run in the home seventh. Mike Antico singled and later crossed the plate on a single by JJ Wetherholt.
Ricardo Velez relieved Thompson and threw a scoreless seventh. New arrival Randel Clemente surrendered four runs in 2/3 of an inning. Michael Watson tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his second save.
Springfield went up 5-0 in the fourth inning. Noah Mendlinger was hit by a pitch. Trey Paige singled and stole second. Graysen Tarlow reached on a fielder’s choice and Mendlinger scored. Miguel Ugueto doubled off the top of the wall to plate Paige. Tarlow came home on a bunt single by Jeremy Rivas. Rivas stole second base. Leonardo Bernal drove in Ugueto and Rivas.

The Cardinals added two runs in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-0. Chase Davis doubled. Bernal walked. Noah Mendlinger doubled to score both runners.
Springfield made it 8-0 in the top of the seventh. Tarlow and Ugueto singled. Davis drove in Tarlow on a single.
San Antonio finally got on the board with one run in the home seventh. They added four runs in the eighth to bring the final score to 8-5.
The Cardinals scored eight runs on 11 hits. Tarlow was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Davis was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ugueto was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Bernal and Mendlinger each had two RBI.

The High-A Chiefs defeated the Timber Rattlers by the score of 6-4 at Dozer Park on Wednesday.
In his return from the injured list, starter Chen-Wei Lin was rusty. The right-hander pitched one inning, gave up three runs on four walks and one hit and struck out one.
Darlin Saladin relieved Lin and threw a scoreless second. In his first relief outing after 19 starts, Gerardo Salas surrendered one run in 4 2/3 innings. Zeke Wood hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Mason Burns tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.
Wisconsin went up 3-0 in the first inning. Peoria tied the score in the second. Josh Kross singled. Ian Petrutz walked. Won-Bin Cho followed with a three-run home run.
The Timber Rattlers regained the lead at 4-3 in the fourth. The Chiefs scored three runs in the sixth to go ahead 6-4. Deniel Ortiz hit a solo home run, his first for Peoria. Travis Honeyman singled. Ryan Campos doubled. Honeyman scored on a sac fly by Josh Kross. Jon Jon Gazdar singled to plate Campos.
The Chiefs scored six runs on 11 hits. Cho was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ortiz was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Campos was 3-for-4.
Ortiz stole his second base since joining Peoria.
Peoria is 42-61 overall, 16-22 in the second half, and is fifth place in the Midwest League West, 5.5 games back of Beloit.

The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Christian Martin doubled and scored on a double by Jose Cordoba.
Palm Beach added two runs in the second. Yordalin Pena, Luis Pino and Sammy Hernandez walked. Johnfrank Salazar singled to score Pena. Pino came home on a wild pitch.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-3 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, 2B/LF Christian Martin, was 3-for-7 plus a walk, two RBI and a run scored in Palm Beach’s doubleheader sweep. Other standouts: Aaron Wilkerson, Pete Hansen, Jesus Baez, Deniel Ortiz, Yordalin Pena, Rainiel Rodriguez, Kenly Hunter and Sebastian Dos Santos.
Osvaldo Berrios surrendered three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief and took the loss. Oddanier Mosqueda yielded one run in 2/3 of an inning. Gerson Moreno threw a scoreless eighth. Jack Ralston allowed two runs, one earned, in the ninth.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when Durham scored four runs. Memphis answered with one run in the home seventh. Nathan Church and Jimmy Crooks singled. Church scored on a sac fly by Blaze Jordan.
The Bulls added two runs in the eighth to win 6-1.
The Memphis offense scored one run on four hits. Church was 2-for-4. They were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

On defense, shortstop JJ Wetherholt made a throwing error.

Again, the bullpen was not sharp. Andrew Marrero relieved Hansen and surrendered three runs without recording an out. Luis Gastelum yielded two runs, one earned in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.
Springfield went up 2-0 in the second inning. Noah Mendlinger doubled. Trey Paige followed with a two-run home run.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0. Mendlinger walked. Dakota Harris doubled. Miguel Ugueto reached on a fielder’s choice but Mendlinger was out at home. Harris stole home.
Springfield widened the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Jeremy Rivas doubled and scored on a double by Leonardo Bernal.
The Missions put up four runs in the seventh to tie the game. They added the decisive run in the eighth and the Cards had no answer in the ninth.
The Cardinals scored four runs on seven hits. Harris was 2-for-4. Paige had two RBI.
On the bases, Ugueto stole his fourth base of the season. Harris swiped his 20th bag. Joshua Baez stole his 23rd base. Ugueto was caught stealing.

The High-A Chiefs fell to the Timber Rattlers by a 5-3 score at Dozer Park on Tuesday. In his system debut, starter Mason Molina pitched four innings, gave up two runs on two hits, fanned five and walked four.
Dominic Picone relieved Molina and surrendered one run in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss. Jawilme Ramirez yielded one unearned run in two innings. Tanner Jacobson tossed a scoreless ninth.
Wisconsin took 1-0 lead in the first and made it 2-0 in the second.
Peoria tied the game in the third. Zach Levenson singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jesus Baez walked. Deniel Ortiz doubled to score Levenson and Baez.
The Timber Rattlers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead at 4-2. The Chiefs made it 4-3 in the home seventh. Jon Jon Gazdar drew a walk. Won-Bin Cho singled. Zach Levenson plated Gazdar on a single.
Wisconsin widened the lead to 5-3 in the eighth.

The Beach Birds defeated the Blue Jays by the score of 3-1 in the opener of a road twin bill on Tuesday, breaking their five-game losing skid. This was the completion of the suspended game on July 13.
At that time, starter Braden Davis (since promoted to Peoria on July 16) pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up one run on one hit, fanned six and walked one.
On Tuesday, Keiverson Ramirez took over and threw three scoreless innings. In his Palm Beach return, Zack Showalter hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings and received the win.
Dunedin went up 1-0 in the fifth inning. Palm Beach scored three runs in the eighth to take the lead 3-1. Christian Martin and Jalin Flores walked. Rainiel Ramirez followed with a three-run home run.
The Cardinals scored three runs on six hits. Yordalin Pena was 3-for-3. Rodriguez had three RBI.
On the bases, Martin stole his 15th base of the season. Cade McGee swiped his 19th bag. Pena stole his 13th base. Rodriguez and Pena were caught stealing. Rodriguez was picked off second base.

Yordy Herrera relieved Sequera and surrendered one unearned run in two innings.
The Beach Birds went up 3-0 in the second inning. Jose Suarez and Matthew Miura singled. Suarez scored on a wild pitch. Miura stole second base. Luis Pino walked. Sammy Hernandez plated Miura and Pino on a double.
The Blue Jays scored one run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. Palm Beach answered with two runs in the fifth. Jose Cordoba singled. Suarez followed with a two-run home run.

Gabriel Chinchilla relieved Franco, surrendered one run in four innings with five strikeouts and received the win. Michael Correa, Kriscol Peralta and Jesus Garcia tossed a scoreless inning each.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Cardinals put up a six-run third with the help of the Yankees. Juan Pablo Cabrera doubled. Kenly Hunter singled to score Cabrera. Hunter advanced to third on an error. Royelny Strop drew a walk. Juan Rujano singled. Yaxson Lucena walked and Hunter scored. Cristofer Lebron walked and Strop scored. Rujano scored on a walk by Sebastian Dos Santos. Lucena and Lebron came home on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt.
The Cardinals added two runs in the fifth to increase the lead to 8-1. Rujano singled. Yaxson Lucena grounded into a force out with Rujano out at second. Dos Santos doubled. Christian Saez doubled to plate Lucena and Dos Santos.
The Yankees added their second run in the home sixth before the Cardinals made it 10-2 in the seventh. Lucena walked. Lebron reached on an error and Lucena advanced to second. Lebron singled, advancing Lucena to third. He scored on a wild pitch.
The Cardinals scored 10 runs on 10 hits. Hunter was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dos Santos was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Rujano was 3-for-5. Saez had two RBI. Lucena scored three runs.

Losing both series last week, the St. Louis Cardinals fell below .500 for the first time in almost three months. Andre Pallante made two good starts, but the offense has been lacking. The subject of our history feature is Cardinals trades during this busy deadline week since 1985.
Cardinals’ bullpen reduced by three at trade deadline
The annual MLB trade deadline came and went this past Thursday. As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals traded three relief pitchers with expiring contracts for six minor leaguers but did not go beyond those moves.
On Wednesday, July 30, the Cardinals traded closer Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets for three A-ball prospects. They are SS Jesus Baez, RHP Nate Dohm, and RHP Frank Elisalt. All three have been assigned to the High-A Peoria Chiefs.
Also on Thursday, RHP Phil Maton was traded to the Texas Rangers for LHP Mason Molina, RHP Skylar Hales, and international bonus pool money.
Baez, age 20, was the Mets no. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Dohm, age 22, was ranked #16 by MLB Pipeline. Elissalt, age 23, was unranked. Baez has already appeared in games for the Chiefs. Dohm and Elissalt pitched for Peoria on Sunday.
The return for Helsley was about what could reasonably be expected for a short-term rental. Helsley becomes a free agent at the end of the season, without any guarantee where he will play in 2026. There are some who opined that the Mets got the better end of the deal, however.
Dohm was mostly a reliever in college, though he made a handful of starts in 2024. He throws a 93-95 mph fastball and has a good slider but also possesses a changeup and curveball he throws less often.
Jordan, 22, is a first baseman, sometime third baseman with high power potential. Jordan was a draft pick of soon to be Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom, when he was leading the Red Sox. Jordan is appearing in games for the Memphis Redbirds and had his first RBI on Sunday.
Left-hander Molina, 22, was the Rangers #26 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He was originally drafted by the Brewers and acquired by the Rangers in January 2025. Molina possesses a 50-grade fastball and slider, and 60-grade changeup. He has been assigned to the Peoria Chiefs.
Hales, 23, was the Rangers fourth round draft pick in 2023. The right-hander was pitching with their Triple-A affiliate Round Rock Express at the time of the trade. Hales has a 60-grade fastball that sits 94-97 mph and can reach 100. He also had a mid-80s slider which is his best secondary pitch. He pitches from a low arm slot. Hales has been assigned to the Memphis Redbirds.
The Cardinals recalled RHP Ryan Fernandez, RHP Andre Granillo and RHP Roddery Muñoz from Memphis to replace the three traded relievers and made a series of 14 other moves across the system over the weekend to rebalance rosters.
The Cardinals defeated the Marlins by a 7-1 score on Monday at Busch Stadium. Starter Andre Pallante pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed one hit, fanned four and walked one to earn his sixth win of the season.
Steven Matz relieved Pallante and threw a scoreless eighth. Matt Svanson surrendered one run in the ninth.
St. Louis took the lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Alec Burleson. They added a run in the fourth as Yohel Pozo doubled and scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error.
The Cardinals put up a crooked number with five in the seventh. Victor Scott doubled and stole second base. Brendan Donovan and Iván Herrera walked. Garrett Hampson pinch ran for Herrera. Burleson reached on catcher interference and Scott came home. Masyn Winn hit a bases clearing double. Jordan Walker plated Winn on a double.
The Cardinals were blanked by the Marlins by a 5-0 score on Tuesday. Starter Sonny Gray pitched five innings, gave up three runs on eight hits, fanned five and walked one. Gray took the loss.
Steven Matz relieved Gray and surrendered two runs in the sixth. Matt Svanson threw two scoreless innings. John King collected two outs in the ninth inning but left with an injury. Kyle Leahy secured the final out of the ninth.
Miami went up 2-0 in the second inning, added one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to go ahead 5-0.
The Cardinals offense scattered only four hits, singles by Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Pedro Pagés and Jordan Walker. They were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.
Victor Scott walked twice and stole his 28th and 29th bases of the season.
The Cardinals were blanked by the Marlins for the second straight game to close the three-game home series with a thud. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched six innings, gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five. Mikolas took the loss.
Riley O’Brien relieved Mikolas and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. JoJo Romero followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Kyle Leahy secured the final out of the ninth.
Miami scored the only two runs of the game in the third inning. St. Louis was held to five total hits, all singles, one each by Nolan Arenado, Alec Burleson, Brendan Donovan, Thomas Saggese and Jordan Walker.
The offense was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners stranded.
The Cardinals fell to the Padres in the opener of a three-game weekend series in San Diego. Starter Matthew Liberatore pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits, struck out one and walked two.
Matt Svanson relieved Liberatore and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Gordon Graceffo hurled a scoreless eighth. Ryan Fernandez tossed a scoreless ninth.
All the runs in this game scored in the fifth inning. The Cardinals took a brief lead on a solo home run by Willson Contreras.
The Padres answered with four runs in the home half, aided by costly throwing errors on the infield by Contreras and Nolan Gorman.
The Cardinals offense scored one run on four hits. The hits other than the Contreras home run were singles by Gorman, Victor Scott and Masyn Winn.
The offense was 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left one man on base.
The Cardinals won their second game of the week, and first against the Padres on Saturday by the score of 8-5. Starter Michael McGreevy pitched six innings, gave up four runs on seven hits, fanned four and walked one.
Kyle Leahy relieved McGreevy and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. JoJo Romero surrendered one run in the final 1 1/3 innings.
The somnolent Cardinal offense, which scored only one run in the past three games, appeared at first blush like their drowsiness would continue for a fourth. The Padres offense hit the ground running with one run in the first inning, followed by two in the second and one in the third, to lead 4-0.
The St. Louis struggling offense awakened in the fourth with four runs to tie the game. Willson Contreras doubled and Masyn Winn singled. Nolan Gorman singled to score Contreras. Pedro Pagés followed with a three-run home run.
The Cardinals did not stop there, with two more runs in the fifth to take the lead 6-4. Iván Herrera singled and Alec Burleson walked. Winn doubled to plate Herrera and Burleson.
That score held until the top of the ninth, when the Cardinals added two more runs for an 8-4 lead. Victor Scott and Brendan Donovan singled. Herrera was hit by a pitch. Burleson drove in the Scott on a single. Donovan came home on a sac fly by Contreras.
The Padres mounted a rally in the home ninth but managed only one run to lose 8-5.
St. Louis’ offense scored eight runs on 12 hits. Winn was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Herrera was 3-for-4. Pagés had three RBI.
On defense, Burleson had an outfield assist at second base.
Sunday, August 3, 2025 – Cardinals 3 at Padres 7
The Cardinals were defeated by the Padres on Sunday to drop their second series of the week. Starter Andre Pallante pitched five innings, gave up two runs on five hits, fanned four and walked three. Pallante took the loss.
Gordon Graceffo relieved and surrendered four runs in two innings. Roddery Muñoz yielded one run in the eighth.
The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, added four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to lead 7-0.
The Cardinals avoided the shutout with three runs in the ninth, but the effort was in vain. Iván Herrera and Alec Burleson singled. Willson Contreras walked. Nolan Gorman singled and Herrera scored. Jordan Walker plated Burleson on a single. Contreras came home on a sac fly by pinch hitter Lars Nootbaar.
The Cardinals scored three runs on six hits. Herrera was 2-for-3.
On defense, third baseman Thomas Saggese made a throwing error.
The Big Picture
The Cardinals ended the week with a record of 2-4, winning one game each with the Marlins and the Padres. The team sunk even lower into fourth place, now 12 games out of first. They are one game below .500, a place they haven’t been in almost three months, since May 6th. It’s not that much of a stretch to get to last place at this pace, considering the current cellar-dwelling team, the Pirates, have won seven of their last 10 games.
The Cardinals offense shows up once or twice a week and then disappears again. When it disappears, it does so almost entirely. Just this week alone, the team was shut out twice and was held to one run twice. This team does not win or lose close games anymore it seems and the departure of closer Ryan Helsley will not help in the short-term.
The top offensive performers for the week by OPS, which has regularly become a small number of late, consists of Pedro Pagés (1.000 in 7 ABs). Next closest was Masyn Winn (.824). At the bottom are Lars Nootbaar (.367), Brendan Donovan (.347) and Yohel Pozo (.276). Nootbaar just returned from the IL and started one game over the weekend, and pinch hit in the final game. Donovan and Pozo have no such excuse. Donovan has been in a slump since the All-Star Game.
The pitching hasn’t been as bad as the offense, though that is not as ringing of an endorsement as it sounds. The starters with ERAs for the week under 4.00 are Andre Pallante (1.50 in two starts) and Miles Mikolas (3.00). Sonny Gray (5.40) hasn’t been himself for multiple starts. Michael McGreevy has also not been particularly good since he became a permanent member of the rotation.
The bullpen is in flux, so it is not surprising that there have been issues. Gordon Graceffo pitched poorly (12.00). Steven Matz was traded away, so his 9.00 ERA in two games can be disregarded. Roddery Muñoz (9.00) has made only one appearance of one inning, so he gets a pass for the time being (his track record, doesn’t suggest he will get better, but who knows). Everyone else has been fine.
It remains to be seen who closes games with Helsley gone. JoJo Romero received the first opportunity, with Riley O’Brien and Kyle Leahy perhaps also in the mix.
The Cardinals continue their West Coast road trip in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, where more of the same could be in the offing. The Cards come home for nine games, starting with a weekend series with the Cubs, who have fallen off a bit and lost first place to the Brewers. That shouldn’t make much difference, unless the Cardinals suddenly find something they haven’t had for quite some time.

Injury Report
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson has had several setbacks in his rehab. Thompson is reportedly hoping to resume throwing within the next week or two. When Thompson may return to the big league roster is unknown.
LF Lars Nootbaar was activated from the 10-day injured list on August 2.
2B Nolan Gorman was activated from the 10-day injured list on August 1.
LHP John King was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 30. Left oblique strain. King sustained the injury on July 29 after throwing two pitches in the ninth inning of the game against the Marlins. A mid-August return is the goal.
3B Nolan Arenado was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 1. Right shoulder strain. The third baseman has been bothered by shoulder pain for some time. There is no timetable established for Arenado’s return.
Looking Ahead
The series in San Diego ended on Sunday, and the team traveled north to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers in a three-game set. Sonny Gray is expected to make the Monday start, followed by Miles Mikolas on Tuesday and Matthew Liberatore on Wednesday.
After a travel day on Thursday, August 7, a nine-day homestand begins, first with the Cubs. The Rockies and Yankees complete the homestand.
The Cardinals then head to Florida, beginning with three at the Marlins beginning Monday, August 18, and ending with three at the Tampa Bay Rays, guesting at Steinbrenner Field. The Rays series begins on Thursday, August 21, and ends on Monday, August 24, with an off day in the middle on August 23.
The game was moved off the Saturday date due to a conflict with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers pre-season football game. The Buccaneers play their games at Raymond James Field across the street and the two stadiums share parking.
Blast from the Past
The trade deadline has passed, and the Cardinals were sellers again. As expected, the Cardinals traded their players with expiring contracts, Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz and Phil Maton.
This week’s Blast from the Past will reminisce about past trades involving the Cardinals for the period of July 28 through August 3. The 2025 trade deadline was on July 31 and has consistently been on or about this date for decades. Prior to 1985, the deadline was June 15, so the trades discussed here will be of the post-1985 variety.

July 29, 2002 – On this day, the Cardinals acquired Scott Rolen, along with Doug Nickle (who was claimed off waivers by the Padres a month later) and cash from the Phillies, and sent Placido Polanco, Bud Smith, and Mike Timlin to Philadelphia.
July 29, 2018 – On this date, the Cardinals traded St. Louis native Luke Voit and International Bonus Pool money to the Yankees for LHP Chasen Shreve and RHP Giovanny Gallegos.
July 29, 2024 – On this day, the Cardinals were part of a three-team trade, sending IF/OF Tommy Edman (on a rehab assignment at the time) to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers sent Miguel Vargas and two prospects to the White Sox, and the Cardinals received RHP Erick Fedde and OF Tommy Pham from the White Sox.
This trade turned out fabulously for the Dodgers, but not so much for the Cardinals as both Pham and Fedde were eventually waived.
July 30, 2013 – The Cardinals traded Marc Rzepczynski to Cleveland for Juan Herrera. Rzepczynski was a part of the World Series Championship club in 2011. Herrera spent four seasons bouncing around three levels of the Cardinals minor league system.
July 30, 2014 – The Cardinals acquired RHP Justin Masterson from Cleveland for OF James Ramsey. Ramsey was St. Louis’ first-round draft pick in 2012. He never reached the major leagues, bouncing around the minor leagues before calling it quits in 2018. Ramsey is currently the head coach for the Georgia Institute of Technology baseball team.

July 30, 2015 – The Cardinals acquired OF Brandon Moss from Cleveland for RHP Rob Kaminsky. The Cardinals eventually re-acquired Kaminsky on a minor league contract in 2019. The Cardinals called him up on August 15, 2020 and he made three appearances out of the bullpen. He was designated for assignment a month later and remained in the organization at the Alternate Site for the final weeks of the COVID-disrupted season.
Kaminsky played in the minor leagues for the Phillies and the Mariners until the end of the 2023 season. The Mariners reacquired him in June 2024 and he became a free agent at the end of the season. The Cardinals signed Kaminsky to a minor league contract this February and released him on June 2.
July 31, 2010 – On this date, the Cardinals acquired RHP Jake Westbrook from Cleveland in a three-team trade with the Padres. The Cardinals sent OF Ryan Ludwick to the Padres.
July 31, 2011 – On this date, the Cardinals acquired SS Rafael Furcal from the Los Angeles Dodgers for OF Alex Castellanos.
July 31, 2014 – On this day, the Cardinals traded RHP Joe Kelly and OF Allen Craig to the Boston Red Sox for Ps John Lackey and Corey Littrell.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis 1B Matt Lloyd, was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Quinn Mathews, Nathan Church, Chase Davis, Zach Levenson and Yeferson Portolatin.
Behind Matt Lloyd’s five RBI, the Triple-A Redbirds walloped the Tides in a 13-2 road win on Friday.
Quinn Mathews made his best start in some time. The lefty pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on five hits, fanned a season-high nine and walked just one to earn his third win.
Chris Roycroft relieved Mathews and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Memphis went up 2-0 in the second inning. Matt Koperniak singled. César Prieto grounded into a force as Koperniak was out at second. Matt Lloyd doubled and Prieto scored. Bryan Torres plated Lloyd on a single.
The Redbirds put up five runs in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 7-0. Mike Antico walked, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. JJ Wetherholt, Nathan Church and Jimmy Crooks walked and Antico scored. Koperniak walked to score Wetherholt. Prieto plated Church and Crooks on a single. Koperniak came home on a sac fly by Lloyd.
Norfolk scored two runs in the home seventh to avert the shutout.
Memphis ran up the score with a six-run eighth to lead 13-2. Torres walked. Wetherholt singled. Church drove in Torres on a single. Crooks plated Wetherholt on a single. Prieto reached on an error and Church scored. Lloyd followed with a three-run home run.
The Redbirds offense scored 13 runs on 11 hits. Lloyd was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Church was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Crooks and Prieto each drove in two and scored twice.
Lloyd stole his fifth base of the season. Antico swiped his 15th bag.
Memphis is 57-47 overall, 16-15 in the second half. They are eight games back of IL leader Scranton.
Saturday’s game: at Norfolk, Max Rajcic RHP (0-1, 5.14) vs. Thaddeus Ward RHP (7-6, 5.90) 5:35 CT.
The Double-A Cardinals were pounded by the Travelers by a 7-1 score on Friday at Hammons Field. Starter Ixan Henderson pitched six innings, gave up four runs on six hits, fanned four and walked two. Henderson took the loss.
Zane Mills relieved Henderson and surrendered three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Nathanael Heredia tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Arkansas took a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
Springfield scored their only run in the fifth. Chase Davis singled. Leonardo Bernal walked. Joshua Baez was hit by a pitch. Noah Mendlinger reached on an error and Davis scored.
The Travelers added a run in the sixth and three in the eighth to widen the lead to 7-1.
The Springfield offense scored one run on seven singles, struck out 10 times and was just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Davis was 3-for-5. St. Louis rehabber Lars Nootbaar went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts but made a stellar defensive play.

The High-A Chiefs lost to the Sky Carp by a 5-1 score on Friday. Starter Jose Davila pitched just 1/3 of an inning, gave up three runs on two hits, struck out one and walked three. The right-hander took the loss.
The pen carried a heavy load but kept the Chiefs in the game. Dionys Rodriguez relieved Davila and threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Darlin Saladin surrendered two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Domenic Picone tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Beloit went up 3-0 in the first inning. They added two runs in the sixth to increase the lead to 5-0.
Peoria got on the board in the eighth on a solo home run by Zach Levenson.
The Chiefs scored one run on six hits. Levenson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Josh Kross was 2-for-4. The offense struck out 10 times, was 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
Peoria is 39-60 overall, 13-21 in the second half, and is in fifth place in the Midwest League West, 7.5 games back of Beloit.
Saturday’s game: at Beloit, Braden Davis LHP (1-0, 1.80) vs. Will Schomberg RHP (2-5, 3.86) 6:35 CT.
The Low-A Cardinals fell to the Hammerheads by the score of 5-3 on Friday. Starter Nelfy Ynfante pitched four innings, gave up one run on five hits, fanned five and walked two and took the hard-luck loss.
Three relievers allowed a combined four runs. Yordy Herrera followed Ynfante and surrendered two runs, one earned in two innings. Charles Harrison yielded one run in 1 2/3 innings. Sam Brodersen allowed one run in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Jupiter took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added two runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh, and one run in the top of the ninth.
Palm Beach scored three runs in the home ninth to shrink the final score to 5-3. Jonathan Mejia walked, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jose Suarez, Luis Pino and Sammy Hernandez walked and Mejia scored. Jose Cordoba singled to plate Suarez and Pino.
The Dominican Cardinals walked off the Mets by a 4-3 score in seven innings on Friday. Starter Xavier Cruz pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowed two runs, fanned four and walked one.
Hendrick Cana relieved Cruz and threw three scoreless innings. Beiker Rodriguez surrendered three unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings but received his second win.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when the Mets put up three runs.
The Cardinals answered with four runs in the home seventh to walk it off 4-3. Yaxson Lucena walked. Cristofer Lebron doubled and Lucena scored. Lucas Takahashi was hit by a pitch. Michael Cordero walked. Hector Cabrera lined into a double play with Takahashi out at second. Yeferson Portolatin followed with a three-run home run.
The Cardinals scored four runs on five hits. No Cardinal had multiple hits. Portolatin had three RBI.
On the bases, Sebastian Dos Santos and Takahashi were both caught stealing. On defense, Lebron and Edward Guribe each had a fielding error. Cana picked a runner off first base.
The DSL Cardinals are 22-21 on the season and are in third place in the DSL Southeast Division, four games back of the Marlins.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-0 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, rehabbing Springfield 2B Nolan Gorman, hit a two-run home run and a double. Other standouts include Pete Hansen, Andrew Dutkanych and Jonathan Mejia.
The Triple-A Redbirds edged the Tides by a 5-4 score in Norfolk on Wednesday. Starter Aaron Wilkerson pitched four innings, gave up two runs on four hits, struck out two and walked four.
Alex Cornwell relieved Wilkerson and surrendered one run in 2 2/3 innings. Chris Roycroft threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Oddanier Mosqueda yielded one run in the ninth.
Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Memphis put up three runs in the top of the fourth. Michael Siani doubled. Matt Lloyd singled. Siani scored on a sac fly by Gavin Collins. Bryan Torres doubled to plate Lloyd. Torres came home on a single by Mike Antico.
In the top of the sixth, the Redbirds added a run to increase their lead to 4-2. Lloyd and Collins singled. Lloyd scored on a sac fly by Torres.
Norfolk scored another run in the home sixth to shrink the lead to 4-3.
Memphis answered with a run in the seventh to widen the lead to 5-3. Nathan Church singled. Jimmy Crooks walked. Siani drove in Church on a single.
The Tides added one run in the ninth to lose, 5-4.
The Redbirds scored five runs on 12 hits. Siani was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Antico was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Church was 2-for-5. Lloyd was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Torres had two RBI.

Arkansas rallied for one run in the ninth but fell short, as the Cardinals took the game 6-4.
The offense scored six runs on 11 hits. Linarez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Davis had two RBI. Joshua Baez singled, walked and stole two bases.
For the St. Louis rehabbers, Gorman was 2-for-4, a double and home run, with two RBI and a strikeout. Right fielder Lars Nootbaar went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
Springfield is 62-36 overall, 19-10 in the second half and is in first place in the Texas League North.

Peoria at Beloit (postponed)
The High-A Chiefs’ Wednesday night game at Beloit was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be made up on Thursday, July 31 as the opener of a doubleheader.
Peoria is 39-57 overall, 13-18 in the second half, and is in fifth place in the Midwest League West, 5 games back of Beloit.

Daytona came back to score three runs and cut the lead to 4-3. Palm Beach increased the lead to 5-3 in the seventh. Mejia tripled and scored on a Ugueto double.
The Cardinals scored five runs on six hits. Mejia was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Ugueto was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Martin was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis 3B César Prieto, went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, Dakota Harris and Cade Winquest.
The Triple-A Redbirds pounded the Tides in a 10-4 road victory on Tuesday. Starter Zach Plesac pitched five innings, gave up four runs on six hits, struck out three and walked two to earn his first win.
Roddery Muñoz and Ryan Fernandez threw two scoreless innings of relief each. Fernandez received his second save.
Memphis went up 2-0 in the first inning. JJ Wetherholt hit a solo home run. Nathan Church reached on catcher interference. Luken Baker singled. Matt Koperniak grounded into a force out and Church scored.
The Tides scored one run in the second and three in the third to lead 4-2.
The Redbirds answered with three runs in the fourth to retake the lead at 5-4. Koperniak, César Prieto and Gavin Collins singled. Koperniak scored on a sac fly by Michael Siani. Bryan Torres plated Prieto on a single. Wetherholt drove in Collins on a single.
In the eighth, Memphis put up two runs to increase the lead to 7-4. Prieto singled. Collins walked. Both runners advanced on a sac bunt by Siani. Torres singled and Prieto scored. Collins came home on a sac fly by Wetherholt.
Memphis scored 10 runs on 15 hits. Prieto was 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Wetherholt was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Torres was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Church was 2-for-4. Siani had three RBI. Collins scored two runs.
On defense, Church had an outfield assist at second base.
Memphis is 54-47 overall, 13-15 in the second half. They are 8.5 games back of IL leader Scranton.

The Travelers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Cardinals tied the game in the home third on a solo home run by Dakota Harris.
Arkansas added a run in the fifth to go ahead 2-1. Springfield tied the game again in the sixth. R.J. Yeager singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leonardo Bernal plated Yeager on a double.
The Cardinals added a run in the seventh to take the lead 3-2 on a second solo home run by Harris.
The High-A Chiefs lost to the Sky Carp in a 3-1 road game on Tuesday. Starter Brandt Thompson pitched five innings, gave up three runs on five hits and fanned five. Thompson took the loss.
Tyler Bradt relieved Thompson and threw two scoreless innings. Benjamin Arias tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts.
Beloit did all their scoring in the first inning.
Peoria scored their only run in the third. Tre Richardson doubled and stole third. Richardson scored on a sac fly by Travis Honeyman.
The Class-A Cardinals fell to the Tortugas in Daytona by a 6-2 score on Tuesday. Starter Leonel Sequera pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked two. Sequera took the loss.
Jack Findlay relieved Sequera and surrendered one run in the final 2 1/3 innings.
Daytona took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Beach Birds scored one run in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1. Miguel Ugueto walked, stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rainiel Rodriguez walked. Ugueto scored on a doubleplay by Jose Suarez.

Ricardo Fernandez relieved Chinchilla and surrendered one run in 2/3 of an inning. Branneli Franco yielded three runs, two earned, in 1/3 of an inning. Kriscol Peralta allowed one run in two innings pitched. Jarol Baez tossed the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Blue Jays went up 2-0 in the second inning.
The Cardinals scored two in the third to tie the game. Jesus Perez, Kenly Hunter and Miguel Hernandez walked. Yaxson Lucena drew a fourth consecutive free pass and Perez scored. Hunter came home on a wild pitch.
The Blue Jays put up four runs in the fourth to lead 6-2.
The Cardinals answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. Edward Guribe and Brayan Amoroso singled. Yeferson Portolatin walked. Michael Cordero walked and Guribe scored. Jhonny Chaparro plated Amoroso and Portolatin on a single.
The Blue Jays increased their lead to 9-5 in the home fifth and 10-5 in the sixth.
The Cardinals pushed one run across in the eighth as Perez doubled and scored on a single by Hernandez.
The Cardinals rallied for three more runs in the ninth for the final score of 10-9. Amoroso reached on an error. Portolatin and Cordero walked. Amoroso scored on a wild pitch. Chaparro walked. Portolatin came home on a ground out by Perez. Hunter was hit by a pitch. Hernandez walked to plate Cordero.
The Cardinals scored nine runs on nine hits. Perez was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Guribe was 2-for-5. Hernandez and Chaparro each had two RBI.

As the trade deadline approaches and the rumor mill spins, the St. Louis Cardinals move toward selling as they lost four of seven. Despite being a target in the Padres series, Willson Contreras led the offense with a 1.392 OPS for the week. The subject of our history feature is Cardinals trades during this week since 1985.
JoJo Romero relieved McGreevy and threw a scoreless eighth. Phil Maton tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before the Cardinals tied the game in the fourth. Willson Contreras hit a solo home run. Nolan Arenado doubled and scored on a double by Masyn Winn.
St. Louis added a run in the fifth to take the lead 3-2. Brendan Donovan doubled and scored on a single by Contreras. The Cardinals widened the lead to 5-2 with a two run sixth. Arenado singled and stole second base. Jordan Walker singled. Pedro Pagés plated Arenado on a single. Victor Scott singled. Walker came home on a sac fly by Brendan Donovan.
The Cardinals put up a sixth and final run in the seventh. Contreras doubled and later scored on a single by Walker.
The offense scored six runs on 15 hits. Contreras was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Winn was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Walker was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Arenado was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Donovan was 2-for-4.
On the bases, Arenado stole his second base of the season. On defense, Scott made a fielding error.
The Cardinals fell to the Rockies by an 8-4 score on Tuesday. In what became his final game pitched for St. Louis, starter Erick Fedde pitched three innings, gave up six runs on seven hits, fanned five and walked one and took the loss.
Kyle Leahy relieved Fedde and surrendered one run in 3 2/3 innings. John King threw 1/3 of a scoreless inning. Riley O’Brien yielded one unearned run in the eighth.
Colorado went up 1-0 in the first, 3-0 in the second and 6-0 in the third.
St. Louis got on the board with two runs in the fourth. Alec Burleson singled. Willson Contreras doubled. Burleson scored on a ground out by Nolan Arenado. Masyn Winn singled to score Contreras.
The Rockies increased their lead to 7-2 in the fifth. The Cardinals made it 7-3 in the seventh. Victor Scott walked. Brendan Donovan plated Scott on a double.
St. Louis added a fourth run in the top of the eighth to shrink the lead to 7-4. Jordan Walker doubled and came home on a double by Yohel Pozo.
Colorado scored their final run in the home eighth to win 8-4.
The Cardinals scored four runs on 11 hits. Donovan was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Walker was 2-for-4. Burleson was 2-for-3. Contreras was 2-for-5.
The Cardinals dropped the series to the worst team in baseball with a 6-0 shutout loss on Wednesday. Starter Andre Pallante pitched five innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, fanned five and walked two. Pallante took the loss.
Andre Granillo relieved Pallante and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. John King surrendered one run in the final 1 1/3 innings.
The Rockies went up 4-0 in the second inning and added single runs in the fifth and eighth for the final score of 6-0.
The Cardinals offense scattered five hits. Doubles by Jordan Walker and Willson Contreras were the only extra base hits. They were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
The Cardinals scratched out a win over the Padres in the opener of a four-game weekend series at Busch Stadium. Starter Sonny Gray pitched five innings, gave up seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits and fanned five. Gray took the loss.
Riley O’Brien relieved Gray and threw 1/3 of a scoreless inning. JoJo Romero hurled 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Phil Maton pitched a scoreless eighth and Ryan Helsley tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 20th save.
The Padres went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals answered with one run in the home first. Brendan Donovan singled and scored on a double by Willson Contreras.
St. Louis put up a six run second inning to jump to a 7-2 lead. Jordan Walker singled. Victor Scott walked. Brendan Donovan followed with a three-run home run. Iván Herrera singled. Alec Burleson doubled. Contreras hit a three-run home run.
San Diego cut the lead to 7-5 in the third. The Cardinals responded with a run in the fourth. Scott walked and stole second base. Donovan grounded out, moving Scott to third. Herrera singled to plate Scott.
The Padres answered with two runs in the fifth to shrink the lead to 8-7. The Cardinals made it 9-7 in the sixth on a solo home run by Herrera as the scoring ended there.
The offense scored nine runs on 12 hits. Donovan was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Contreras was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Herrera was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scott scored two runs.
On the bases, Scott stole his 26th base of the season. Herrera was caught stealing. On defense, Contreras made a throwing error.
Four relievers threw one scoreless inning each starting with Steven Matz, Phil Maton and JoJo Romero. Ryan Helsley earned his 21st save.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch. Nolan Arenado reached on a fielder’s choice. Masyn Winn executed a sac bunt and moved the runners over. Yohel Pozo grounded out and Contreras scored.
St. Louis added two runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0. Contreras and Arenado walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners. Winn plated Contreras and Arenado on a double.
The Cardinals fell to the Padres by the score of 3-1 in the third game of the series on Saturday. Starter Matthew Liberatore pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits, struck out three and walked two. Liberatore took the loss.

The Cardinals scored one run on three hits. The double by Walker was the only extra base hit. The offense was 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
The Cardinals lost the final game of the series to the Padres on Sunday. Starter Michael McGreevy pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up seven runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked two. McGreevy took the loss.
Andre Granillo relieved McGreevy and surrendered one run in 2 1/3 innings. John King yielded one run in the final two innings.
The Padres dominated, starting with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They scored one run in the third and four in the fourth to lead 7-0.
The Cardinals avoided the shutout on a two-run home run by Alec Burleson in the sixth.
San Diego continued to add on with single runs in the seventh and eighth to win the game handily, 9-2.
The Cardinals scored two runs on six hits. Burleson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Iván Herrera, Masyn Winn, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott singled.
The offense was 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
On defense, Scott made a throwing error.
The Big Picture
The Cardinals finished the week with a record of 3-4. They lost a series to the Rockies, the worst team in baseball. They split a four-game home series with the Wild Card-contending Padres. The Cardinals are in fourth place in the National League Central Division, nine games back of first place.
The offense was inconsistent in both series. It came and went like the wind. The top offensive performers by OPS over the last seven days consisted of one player, Willson Contreras, with an OPS of 1.392. This offense came with some pain on Willson’s part as the Padres made a target out of him at the plate, resulting in some bench clearing scuffles with yelling involved.
The next closest by OPS were Jordan Walker (.865) and Iván Herrera (.842). At the bottom were Victor Scott (.470), Nolan Arenado (.450), and Pedro Pagés (.118).
The pitching was inconsistent as well. Miles Mikolas had a scoreless outing this week (surprise, surprise) and Matthew Liberatore (2.08) held his own for about four innings. Sonny Gray (10.80) pitched his second clunker in a row. Andre Pallante (9.00) was not particularly good either.
Then there was Erick Fedde, who made one start this week and who is no longer a Cardinal. He was designated for assignment after his disastrous start and is now the property of the Atlanta Braves. Apparently, the Cardinals are paying the majority of Fedde’s remaining salary to get the Braves to take him, according to some reports. What the Cardinals are getting in return if anything, is unclear, as the transactions page lists the return as “future considerations,” which could be a player to be named later or cash.
The Cardinals now have Michael McGreevy in the rotation on what appears to be a regular basis. McGreevy pitched twice this week. He had a very good start against the Rockies and a very bad start against the Padres for an ERA of 6.17.
The bullpen was okay and is still intact for the moment. The trade deadline is four days away and the pen is likely to look very different for next week’s installment of The Big Picture.
The Cardinals begin the new week at home with a three-game series with the Marlins, who just won a series against the Brewers, who had the best record in baseball. St. Louis ends the week again against the Padres, this time in San Diego. For his sake, hopefully Willson Contreras will survive it.
Katie Woo of the Athletic reports that the Dodgers and the Yankees are among the teams showing interest in utilityman Brendan Donovan. Woo states that although the Cardinals will listen to offers, the likelihood of a Donovan trade is low, as the Cardinals asking price will be “sky-high”.
Woo further writes that the Cardinals are “not willing to part with one of their position players unless they are blown away by the offer”. Woo outlined that such players as Alec Burleson, Iván Herrera and Lars Nootbaar are “gathering various levels of interest”.
Woo goes on to say that the team is “prioritizing moving pitchers” listing Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, Steven Matz and Miles Mikolas, who are all headed for free agency at the end of the season. Notably, of the four listed, Mikolas has no-trade protection, which would hamper or limit the Cardinals ability to move him.
Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch confirms the reports that Helsley, Maton, and Matz are being shopped, but also that the Cardinals will listen on lefties John King and JoJo Romero. Goold also listed infielder Nolan Gorman as someone about whom the Cardinals will listen to offers. Again, one presumes that any offer would have to be substantial in light of the team’s reluctance to part with position players as highlighted by Woo.
Some of the teams who have reportedly shown interest in Helsley are the Dodgers, Phillies and Blue Jays.
The pre-season speculation regarding a possible trade of Nolan Arenado continues into this trade deadline. John Denton of MLB.com reported at the beginning of the week that POBO John Mozeliak was planning to meet with Arenado to have an “exploratory discussion” as to whether the third baseman is agreeable to a trade to any of the teams he listed during the offseason.

Injury Report
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson had several setbacks in his rehab and is not throwing. He is still feeling discomfort but hopes to be throwing again in the next “week or two” (as of July 26).
LF Lars Nootbaar (left costochondrial sprain) was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 13. Nootbaar has able to resume swinging a bat and has taken swings off a tee and against flips from coaches. He will go on a rehab assignment to the Springfield Cardinals this week.
2B Nolan Gorman was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 18 due to low back pain. Gorman reported feeling much better as of July 24, and the team is sending him on a rehab assignment to the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday, July 29.
Looking Ahead
The Marlins come to town on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Cardinals. The starters for this series are Andre Pallante on Monday, followed by Sonny Gray on Tuesday and Miles Mikolas on Wednesday.
The month of August begins with another road trip, first to San Diego, then a set in Los Angeles with the Dodgers.
After a travel day on Thursday, August 7, a nine-day homestand begins, three games each with the Cubs, Rockies and Yankees.
The Cardinals then leave for a road trip to Florida, beginning with three at the Marlins starting Monday, August 18, and ending with three at the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays series begins on Thursday, August 21, and ends on Monday, August 24, with an off day in the middle on August 23. The game was moved off the Saturday date due to a conflict with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers pre-season football game, which will be played at the Steinbrenner Field complex on that day. The Buccaneers play their games at Raymond James Field across the street.
Blast from the Past
The trade deadline is upon us, and it appears that the Cardinals will be sellers again this season. There is a lot of speculation but no concrete rumors as of this writing. The speculation is that the Cardinals will be selling off pitching as several relievers will become free agents at the end of the season.
This week’s Blast from the Past will reminisce about past trades involving the Cardinals for the period of July 21 through July 27. The trade deadline is on July 31 and has consistently been on or about this date for decades. Prior to 1985, the deadline was on June 15, so the trades discussed here will be of the post 1985 variety.

Holliday came to the game in Philadelphia that day without any equipment and had to borrow a glove, shoes, and bats from his teammates. Holliday had four hits, an RBI and a stolen base in the game.
July 24, 2015 – On this date, the Cardinals acquired RHP Steve Cishek from the Miami Marlins for RHP Kyle Barraclough.
July 26, 2008 – On this date the Cardinals traded RHP Anthony Reyes to Cleveland for RHP Luis Perdomo. Perdomo was assigned to the Springfield Cardinals. He was taken in the 2008 Rule 5 Draft by the San Francisco Giants.
July 26, 2009 – On this date, the Cardinals acquired infielder Mark DeRosa from Cleveland for RHP Jess Todd and RHP Chris Perez.
July 27, 2011 – On this date, the Cardinals traded OF Colby Rasmus, along with LHP Trever Miller and LHP Brian Tallet to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for RHP Edwin Jackson, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, and RHP Octavio Dotel. Jackson had been acquired by the Blue Jays just hours earlier from the Chicago White Sox.

Peoria vs. West Michigan (suspended)
Friday’s game at Dozer Park was suspended in the top of the fifth inning with the Chiefs down 4-0. It will be resumed on Saturday, July 26 prior to the regularly scheduled contest, which is reduced to seven innings.
Peoria is 37-54 overall, 11-15 in the second half, and is in fifth place in the Midwest League West, 4.5 games back of Beloit.

The Low-A Cardinals lost to the Tortugas in a 12-8 back-and-forth slugfest on Friday. In his second start with Palm Beach, Ruben Menes pitched three innings, gave up two runs on two hits, fanned four and walked two.
All five Beach Birds pitchers were scored upon. Jack Findlay relieved Menes and surrendered three runs, two earned, in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Ernie Day yielded three runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss. Alan Reyes allowed three unearned runs in the seventh. Angel Cuenca gave up one run in the eighth.
Palm Beach took the lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Raniel Rodriguez. They added a run in the top of the second to lead 2-0. Jose Suarez singled and scored on a double by Yordalin Pena.
Daytona answered with a run in the home second to cut the lead to 2-1.
Palm Beach responded with a run in the top of the third to lead 3-1. Deniel Ortiz singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by Suarez.
The Tortugas made it 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
The Cardinals added a run in the top of the fourth to increase the lead to 4-2. Sammy Hernandez walked. Jonathan Mejia singled. Christian Martin plated Hernandez on a single.
Daytona put up three runs in the home fourth to go ahead 5-4.
The Cardinals countered with a three-run fifth to regain the lead 7-5. Ortiz walked. Suarez was hit by a pitch. Luis Piño followed with a three-run home run.
The Tortugas continued to score with three runs each in the sixth and seventh to take the lead at 11-7.
Palm Beach posted a final run in the top of the eighth but the scoring ended there. Hernandez singled. Martin walked. Miguel Ugueto drove in Hernandez on a single.
Daytona added one final insurance run in the home eighth for the final tally of 12-8.
The Cardinals scored eight runs on 14 hits. Pena and Ugueto were both 2-for-5 with an RBI. Suarez was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mejia was 3-for-5. Piño had three RBI. Ortiz scored two runs.
Ortiz stole his 29th base of the season. On defense, Mejia made a throwing error. Hernandez had a fielding miscue.
Palm Beach is 44-46 overall, 13-13 in the second half, and is in third place in the FSL East, 4.5 games back of St. Lucie.

The Dominican Cardinals were edged by the Yankees by a 4-3 score on Friday. Starter Earle Zulueta secured just one out, and gave up three runs on one hit and walked two. Zulueta took the loss.
Hendrick Cana relieved Zulueta and surrendered one run in 3 2/3 innings. Jesus Garcia tossed the final two scoreless innings.
The Yankees went up 4-0 in the first inning.
The Cardinals put up two runs in the third to cut the lead to 4-2. Yeferson Portolatin walked. Sebastian Dos Santos singled. Dos Santos stole second and Portolatin scored on a wild pitch. Dos Santos came home on a sac fly by Edward Guribe.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth to shrink the lead to 4-3. Hector Cabrera singled. Portolatin singled and Cabrera scored on a throwing error.
The Cardinals scored three runs on five hits. Cabrera was 2-for-3. Portolatin singled, walked twice and scored.
Dos Santos stole his seventh base of the season. Portolatin swiped two bags.
On defense, Portolatin made a throwing error. Dos Santos had a fielding miscue.
The DSL Cardinals are 19-19 on the season and are in third place in the DSL Southeast Division, four games back of the Marlins.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-2 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis’ Aaron Wilkerson, threw eight scoreless innings on four hits with four strikeouts. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, Darlin Moquete, Brayden Jobert, Cade McGee and Jose Suarez.
Behind five solo home runs and strong pitching, the Triple-A Redbirds shut out the Stripers by a 9-0 score at AutoZone Park on Wednesday.
In his system debut, starter Aaron Wilkerson pitched eight scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out four to earn the win, his fifth of 2025.
In the second, another bases empty home run was hit by César Prieto. The Redbirds did it again in the third, Wetherholt’s second solo home run in two at-bats.
The solo homer barrage grew to five in the fourth inning as Matt Koperniak joined in. The sixth and final run came via small ball in the seventh. Prieto walked and stole second base. Prieto advanced to third on a ground out by Michael Siani. Bryan Torres walked and stole second base. Mike Antico plated Prieto on a sac fly.
The Redbirds scored six runs on six hits. Wetherholt was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Prieto scored two runs.
Prieto stole his ninth base of the season. Torres swiped his 20th bag. Antico was caught stealing.
On defense, Siani had an outfield assist at home plate.
Memphis is 50-46 overall, 9-14 in the second half. They are in ninth place in the IL West, 9.5 games back of IL leader Scranton.

Three relievers added 4 2/3 frames to protect the shutout. Austin Love threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his fifth win. Andrew Marrero hurled 1 1/3 innings. Osvaldo Berrios tossed the final 1 2/3 innings and earned his third save.
Springfield went up 3-0 in the third inning. Brody Moore singled and Darlin Moquete followed with a two-run home run. Chase Davis walked and stole second base. Davis scored on a single by Leonardo Bernal.
The High-A Chiefs fell to the Whitecaps by the score of 9-4 on Wednesday. Starter Gerardo Salas pitched just 2/3 of an inning, gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits and struck out one. Salas took the loss.
Hunter Hayes surrendered six runs in two innings of relief as the game got out of hand. Jawilme Ramirez threw two scoreless innings. Mason Burns hurled 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Randel Clemente tossed the final two scoreless innings.
West Michigan went up 3-0 in the first inning and added six runs in the third to lead 9-0.
Peoria scored two runs in the fifth. Tre Richardson singled and Brayden Jobert followed with a two-run home run.
The Chiefs added a run in the seventh. Jobert doubled and later scored on a ground out by Michael Curialle.
Peoria scored their fourth and final run in the ninth. Richardson singled and advanced to second on defensive indifference. Richardson later came home on a ground out by Anyelo Encarnacion.
The Chiefs scored four runs on eight hits. Jobert was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Richardson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Won-Bin Cho was 2-for-3.
On defense, Cho made a fielding error.

The rookie Cardinals were edged by the Nationals by a 4-3 score on Wednesday, which ended their 2025 season. Starter Andrew Dutkanych struggled, getting just one out while giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout. Dutkanych took the loss.
Antoni Cuello relieved Dutkanych and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Two pitchers previously sent down from higher levels finished the game with two scoreless innings each – Zack Showalter (Peoria) and Edwin Nuñez (Springfield).
The Nationals went up 4-0 in the first inning. The Cardinals scored one run in the second. Johnfrank Salazar walked, advanced to second on a balk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Yancel Guerrero.
The Cardinals added two runs in the sixth to shrink the lead to 4-3. Facundo Velazquez singled. Salazar walked. Both runners advanced on a pop out by Heriberto Caraballo. Velasquez scored on a sac fly by Daniel Rojas. Guerrero plated Salazar on a single.
The Cardinals scored three runs on five hits. Guerrero was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Salazar scored two runs.
Guerrero also stole two bases.
The Cardinals are 24-31 on the season and finished in fourth place in the Florida Complex League East Division, 13 ½ games out of first.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-4 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, FCL 3B Bracewell Taveras, was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Matt Lloyd, Jimmy Crooks, Brayden Jobert and Won-Bin Cho.
Alex Cornwell relieved Plesac and surrendered two runs in the sixth. Oddanier Mosqueda yielded one run in two innings and took the loss. Matt Svanson tossed a scoreless ninth.
Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Memphis tied the game in the home first on a solo home run by JJ Wetherholt.
The Redbirds took a 3-1 lead in the second. César Prieto singled. Michael Siani doubled. Matt Lloyd singled and Prieto scored. Siani came home on a sac fly by Bryan Torres.
The Stripers tied the game with two runs in the sixth and took a 4-3 lead in the eighth.

Luis Gastelum relieved Mautz and threw two scoreless innings. Nick Raquet yielded one unearned run in the seventh to take his first loss of the year after eight wins. Ricardo Velez tossed a scoreless eighth.
Tulsa went up 1-0 in the second inning. Springfield tied the game in the fourth. Noah Mendlinger walked and stole second base. Ramon Mendoza plated Mendlinger on a single.

In his Peoria debut, starter Brandt Thompson pitched four innings, gave up two runs on two hits, fanned seven and walked two.
Dionys Rodriguez relieved Thompson and surrendered three runs in the fifth. Darlin Saladin yielded one run in 2 2/3 innings and took the loss. Angel Gonzalez tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
West Michigan went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. In the home second, Peoria tied the game. Josh Kross singled and Brayden Jobert followed with a two-run home run.
The Chiefs added three runs in the fourth to take the lead at 5-2. Kross and Jobert walked. Tre Richardson singled. Won-Bin Cho singled to drive in Kross and Jobert. Richardson scored on a sac fly by Travis Honeyman.
The rookie level Cardinals defeated the Marlins by a 7-3 score on Tuesday. Starter Ian Bedell, on a rehab assignment from Memphis, pitched two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
Aaron Holiday, on a rehab assignment from Palm Beach, relieved Bedell and surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings. Bruno Lopez secured one out. Andrew Bolivar yielded two runs in four innings. Jovi Galvez tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Heriberto Caraballo was hit by a pitch. Paulo Asprilla singled. Daniel Rojas reached on an error and Caraballo came home.
The Cardinals added a third-inning solo home run by Bracewell Taveras to take the lead 2-0. The Marlins cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth.
The Cardinals added three runs in the seventh to widen the lead to 6-1. Taveras singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Facundo Velasquez reached on an error and Taveras scored. Caraballo doubled. Johnfrank Salazar plated Velasquez and Caraballo on a single.
The Cardinals’ lead increased to 7-1 in the top of the eighth. Andru Arthur reached on a fielding error and advanced to third on a throwing error. Arthur came home on a wild pitch.
The Marlins added two runs in the home eighth to shrink the final score to 7-3.
The Cardinals scored seven runs on nine hits. Taveras was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Rojas was 2-for-4. Salazar had two RBI. Caraballo scored two runs.
On the bases, Rojas stole his 14th base of the season. Guerrero swiped three bags. Asprilla stole his first base. Salazar stole two bases. Arthur was caught stealing. Salazar was picked off first base.
On defense, Bolivar made an error on a pickoff.
The Cardinals are 24-30 on the season and are in fourth place in the Florida Complex League. They have been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Dominican Cardinals lost to Colorado by a 6-2 score on Tuesday. Starter Gabriel Chinchilla pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, and struck out one.
Ryan Rodriguez relieved Chinchilla and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Branneli Franco surrendered one run in the seventh. Pedro Olivero and Beiker Rodriguez each tossed a scoreless inning.
Colorado scored twice in the second inning and added a run in the third to lead 3-0. The Cardinals put a run on the board in the fourth as Yaxson Lucena doubled and scored on a single by Brayan Amoroso.
In the fifth, Colorado increased their lead to 5-1. The Cardinals answered with one run in the sixth. Edward Guribe singled. Lucena walked. Cristofer Lebron walked. Michael Cordero walked and Guribe scored.
Colorado added a final run in the seventh to make it 6-2.
The Cardinals scored two runs on five hits. Amoroso was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
On the bases, Kenly Hunter was caught stealing. On defense, Yeferson Portolatin made a fielding error. Chinchilla picked a runner off first base.
The DSL Cardinals are 19-17 on the season and are in second place in the DSL Southeast Division, two games behind the Marlins.

After Brendan Donovan stood out in the All-Star Game, the St. Louis Cardinals were swept in Arizona and have fallen into fourth place. In our history feature, prior Cardinals first round draft picks are revisited.
The two leagues met for the annual MLB All-Star Game, held this year at Truist Park in Atlanta. The National League defeated the American League by the score of 7-6 in “extra innings”.
The lone Cardinal All-Star was Brendan Donovan. Donovan entered in the fifth inning, replacing Ketel Marte at second base. Donovan played the remainder of the game and went 2-for-3 and scored a run. He was the only player to have multiple hits on either roster.
In Donovan’s first at bat in the sixth inning, he hit an infield single to AL shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Donovan scored, along with Fernando Tatis, on a Pete Alonso home run.
Donovan singled again in the seventh, on a line drive to center field. He did not score. Donovan’s last at bat in the ninth was listed as a “ground out to the catcher”. It was essentially what looked like a foul ball that was called fair. Donovan apparently thought it was foul, as he made no attempt to run. This was the last out of the ninth. At that point, the game was tied 6-6.
Rather than have the regular 10th inning with the ghost runner on second, the game was decided by what was called a “swing off’. Each manager chose three hitters and they competed to hit home runs with only three swings allowed. The side with the most home runs after all six hitters completed their three swings, earned the winning run.
The National League won the swing off with four home runs hit to the AL’s three home runs. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies hit three of the NL’s four home runs and was named the All-Star Game MVP.
Wednesday, July 16, 2025 – No game, All-Star Break
The Cardinals fell to the Diamondbacks by a 7-3 score on Friday. Starter Andre Pallante pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up six runs, five earned, on nine hits, struck out three and walked two. Pallante took the loss.
John King relieved Pallante and surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings. Kyle Leahy tossed the final two scoreless innings.
The Diamondbacks took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and added two runs in the third. Single runs in the fifth and seventh increased the lead to 7-0.
The Cardinals finally managed to put three runs on the board in the ninth. Masyn Winn singled and advanced to second on a ground out by Jordan Walker. Pedro Pagés singled to score Winn. Victor Scott followed with a two-run home run.
The Cardinals lost again to the Diamondbacks, this time by the score of 10-1. Starter Sonny Gray pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and fanned five. Gray took the loss.
Gordon Graceffo relieved Gray and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings. John King surrendered one unearned run in the eighth.
The Diamondbacks rocked Gray for three runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth before the right hander was removed with one out in the fourth.
The Cardinals scored their only run in the sixth on an Alec Burleson home run. Arizona tagged John King for their 10th run in the eighth. The run was unearned due to a fielding error by Thomas Saggese.
The Cardinal offense scored their lone run on the home run and scattered six more hits. Masyn Winn was 3-for-4. They were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
In addition to the Saggese error, Pedro Pagés was called for catcher interference, which led to the one unearned run attached to Gray (a two-run home run by Eugenio Suarez in the first inning).
The Cardinals were swept by the Diamondbacks, losing the final game of the series 5-3. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched four innings, gave up five runs on four hits, struck out three and walked two.
Steven Matz relieved Mikolas and threw a scoreless fifth. Riley O’Brien, Jo Jo Romero and Ryan Helsley each pitched a scoreless inning.
The Diamondbacks put up four runs on Mikolas in the first inning. The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 4-1. Victor Scott doubled and stole second base. Iván Herrera singled to score Scott.
Arizona added a run in the home third to increase the lead to 5-3. St. Louis shrunk the lead to 5-2 in the fifth. Yohel Pozo, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott walked to load the bases. Pozo came home on a ground out by Brendan Donovan.
The Cardinals scored a final run in the ninth for the ending 5-3 score. Masyn Winn singled. Walker plated Winn on a single.
The Cardinals scored three runs on seven hits. Walker was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
On the bases, Scott stole his 25th base of the season.
The Big Picture
The Cardinals were 0-3 for the shortened post All-Star Game week as they were swept handily by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team has now dropped into fourth place in the NL Central, 8.5 games behind first place Chicago. They have lost seven of their last 10 games.
The offense wasn’t there in the three games as they were outscored seven to 22. In fact, there wasn’t much of anything going on in the three games on any side of the ball.
The top offensive performers by OPS are Masyn Winn (1.000) and Alec Burleson (.954). Victor Scott was close behind (.873).
At the bottom are Iván Herrera (.462), Brendan Donovan (.350) and Nolan Arenado (.273).
On the pitching side, all three starters were bad. Sonny Gray (21.60 ERA) looked worse than he has looked all season. Miles Mikolas (11.25) and Andre Pallante (9.64) were not much better.
The bullpen was the only side of the team that performed well.
The Cardinals have 10 games in a row before an off day, which doesn’t bode well, considering they played as badly as they have all season after four days off.
The Cardinals move on to Denver to play the Rockies. They then return home for a four-game series with the Padres.
The die may already have been cast, but the team has these 10 days before the deadline to show something or a sell at the deadline is likely coming.
Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch reports that a “handful of teams are poking around on (left-handed pitcher Steven) Matz”. Matz’s contract is up at the end of the season and he will become a free agent. Matz has value as both a starter and a multi-inning reliever and that could generate interest from teams that are seeking one or both.

Injury Report
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson had a setback in his rehab and returned to the Cardinals spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida to resume his throwing program. There have been no updates on Thompson’s progress for quite some time.
RF Jordan Walker has been activated from the 10-day injured list.
LF Lars Nootbaar (left costochondrial sprain) was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 13. Nootbaar had been dealing with left side discomfort for over a week and had to be removed from games early on several occasions. The team is hoping Nootbaar can begin some swing activity on July 21.
Looking Ahead
After being swept in Arizona, the Cardinals finish their road trip with three in Denver against the Rockies.
The team returns home from Colorado to play a seven-game homestand to end the month of July. The San Diego Padres come to Busch Stadium for four games beginning Thursday, July 24. After that, the Cardinals will play three with the Miami Marlins.
August begins with another road trip, first to San Diego, then to Los Angeles for three against the Dodgers.
After a travel day on Thursday, August 7, a nine-day homestand begins, first with the Cubs for a three-game set. Three games with the Rockies, then three against the Yankees ends the homestand.

The annual MLB Draft took place this year on Sunday, July 13 and Monday, July 14. The draft consisted of 20 rounds. The Cardinals had the fifth pick and chose LHP Liam Doyle from the University of Tennessee. All 21 selections plus two free agents have been signed as of Sunday.

This week’s Blast from the Past is a brief history of the Cardinals’ first round picks in the annual draft. This history will not cover every first-round pick but will highlight notable ones and other interesting details of the Cardinals’ history in the first round of the draft.
Since the draft was first implemented in 1965, the Cardinals have drafted 89 players in the first round. Some years the Cardinals had multiple first round picks, as compensatory or supplemental picks for losing free agents.
The Cardinals forfeited their first-round pick in 2002 because they signed free agent Mike Sirotka, who the Chicago White Sox claimed was still under contract with them. The forfeiture was a penalty for that signing. They also lost their first-round pick in 2017 as a punishment for the hacking scandal involving then-Scouting Director Chris Correa.
Of the 89 first round picks, 46 were pitchers, 35 righties and 11 lefties. The others were 11 outfielders, 10 third basemen, eight shortstops, six first basemen, five catchers, and two second basemen. One first round pick was listed as an “infielder”.
Thirty-eight of the picks were from high school, and 51 were from college. Twenty-two of the picks were compensatory or supplemental picks.
The Cardinals had multiple first round picks in the following years, 1988 (3), 1990 (3), 1991 (5), 1995 (2), 1998 (2), 1999 (3), 2000 (2), 2005 (4), 2006 (2), 2007 (2), 2008 (2), 2010 (3), 2012 (5), 2013 (2), 2014 (2), 2015 (2), and 2016 (3).
Three of their first-round picks played on a World Series Championship team. They are Braden Looper and Chris Duncan in 2006 and Lance Lynn in 2011. The only first round pick to win a major individual honor was Todd Worrell, who was the 1986 NL Rookie of the Year.
The Cardinals have never had a first-round pick that didn’t sign with the team. They have never had the first pick in the draft. The highest they have ever picked was third, in 1996, when they chose Looper.
The Cardinals had one first round pick elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as of this writing. That was Ted Simmons, who was the Cardinals first round pick in 1967.
The Cardinals first round pick in 1965, the first year of the MLB draft, was a right-handed pitcher named Joe DiFabio. DiFabio never made it to the major leagues.
Two players on the roster of the 2025 team were first round picks of the Cardinals. They are Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker. Pitchers Zack Thompson (currently on the injured list) and Michael McGreevy were also first round picks.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 4-1 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis RF Matt Koperniak, was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, Dakota Harris, Jason Savacool and Deniel Ortiz.
Oddanier Mosqueda relieved Taylor and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Zack Weiss hurled two scoreless innings. Alex Cornwell tossed a scoreless ninth.
Memphis went up 5-0 in the first inning. JJ Wetherholt doubled. Jimmy Crooks walked. Matt Koperniak singled and Wetherholt scored. César Prieto plated Crooks on a single. Michael Siani walked. Matt Lloyd drove in Koperniak and Prieto on a single. Siani came home on a single by Bryan Torres.
The Redbirds added two runs in the second to increase the lead to 7-0. Wetherholt doubled and came home on a double by Nathan Church. Koperniak doubled to score Church.
Memphis scored seven runs on 14 hits. Wetherholt was 4-for-5 including two doubles with two runs scored. Koperniak was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Prieto was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Torres was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lloyd had two RBI.
On the bases, Torres was caught stealing. On defense, Crooks made a throwing error.
Memphis is 48-44 overall, 7-12 in the second half. They are in ninth place in the IL West, 8.5 games back of IL leader Scranton.

Springfield regained the lead 3-2 in the fifth on a solo home run by Jeremy Rivas. The Wind Surge tied the game again in the eighth.
The Cardinals walked off the win in the ninth. Noah Mendlinger singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rivas walked. Leonardo Bernal plated Mendlinger on a single.

The Cardinals scored four runs on six hits. Harris was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bernal was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Bernal stole two bases. Joshua Baez swiped his 15th bag. Trey Paige was caught stealing.
On defense, Harris made a fielding error. Gastelum picked a runner off first base.
Springfield is 57-31 overall, 14-5 in the second half and is in first place the Texas League North.

Randel Clemente relieved Savacool and threw a scoreless seventh. Hunter Hayes tossed the final two scoreless innings.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jon Jon Gazdar singled, advanced on a throwing error and came home on a single by Ryan Campos.
Peoria added three runs in the second. Josh Kross and Brayden Jobert walked. Tre Richardson plated Kross on a single. Jobert scored on a wild pitch. Gazdar drove in Richardson on a single.
Domenic Picone relieved Odle and threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Sam Brodersen and Zeke Wood tossed a scoreless inning each to complete the shutout.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 in the first inning. Christian Martin singled, stole second base, and advanced to third on an error. Jonathan Mejia walked. Raniel Rodriguez doubled to score Martin. Mejia came home on a passed ball. Rodriguez scored on a sac fly by Deniel Ortiz.
The Beach Birds added a run in the sixth on a solo home by Ortiz. Palm Beach increased the lead to 7-0 with three runs in the ninth. Yordalin Pena walked and stole second base. Bryce Madron walked. Anyelo Encarnacion singled to plate Pena and Madron. Encarnacion scored on a throwing error.
The offense scored seven runs on four hits. No Cardinal had multiple hits. Ortiz had two RBI.
On the bases, Martin stole his 15th base of the season. Cade McGee swiped his 19th bag. Pena stole his 13th base. Madron was caught stealing.
On defense, McGee made a throwing error.
Palm Beach is 31-44 overall, 9-11 in the second half, and is in third place in the FSL East, 4.5 games back of St. Lucie.

FCL Cardinals – Off day
The rookie level Florida Complex League Cardinals are 20-29 on the season and are in fourth place in the Florida Complex League East, 13.5 games back of the FCL Astros.

In a battle for first place, the Dominican Cardinals fell at home to Miami by the score of 7-2 on Friday. Starter Xavier Cruz pitched two innings, gave up one run on one hit, struck out one and walked one.
Daniel Gomez relieved Cruz and surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. Ricardo Fernandez threw 2/3 scoreless innings. Kriscol Peralta yielded one run in the eighth. Jarol Baez tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Cardinals scored first with one run in the first inning. Kenly Hunter singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. Hunter scored on a sac fly by Sebastian Dos Santos.
Miami quickly tied with a run in the second and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.
The Cardinals tied the game in the home third. Dos Santos tripled and scored on a ground out by Edward Guribe.
Miami regained the lead 3-2 in the sixth, increased the lead to 6-2 in the seventh and 7-2 in the eighth.
The Cardinals scored two runs on three hits. No Cardinal had multiples. The offense was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
Hunter stole his 13th base of the season. Yaxson Lucena was caught stealing. On defense, Gomez picked a runner off first base.
The DSL Cardinals are 18-16 on the season and are in second place in the DSL Southeast Division, one game back of the Marlins.

The rookie Cardinals edged the Astros in the first game of a twin bill on Tuesday. Starter Keiverson Ramirez pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on five hits, and struck out three.
Alan Reyes relieved Ramirez and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings on two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Edwin Nuñez surrendered one run but received the win. Brailyn Paulino tossed a scoreless seventh to earn his first save.
The Cardinals went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Yoerny Junco singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Yancel Guerrero reached on a fielder’s choice. Romtres Cabrera doubled to score Junco. Hancel Almonte plated Guerrero on a single.
The Astros tied the game in the home second and added a run in the third to lead 3-2.
The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3. Facundo Velasquez singled and advanced to second on a balk. Guerrero drove in Velasquez on a single.
The Astros regained the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals answered in the seventh on a two-run home run by Johnfrank Salazar to win the game 5-4.
The Cardinals fell to the Astros in the second game of the twin bill on Tuesday. Starter Andrew Bolivar pitched three innings, gave up three runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two.
Bernard Mack relieved Bolivar and surrendered six runs, five earned in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. Juan Severino tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 in the first inning. Facundo Velazquez singled. Bracewell Taveras was hit by a pitch. Paulo Asprilla reached on a fielder’s choice and Velazquez scored. Taveras and Asprilla came home on a throwing error on a fielder’s choice from Daniel Rojas.
Branneli Franco relieved Chinchilla and threw two scoreless innings. Reiner Lopez surrendered one run in two innings. Jarol Baez yielded three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Briam Reyes secured the final out of the ninth and received the win.
The Rockies scored one run in the top of the first. The Cardinals answered in the home first with a solo home run by Miguel Hernandez.
The Cardinals had another a solo home run in the fourth, this one by Brayan Amoroso, to lead 2-1. The Rockies tied the game in the top of the seventh.
The Cardinals broke the tie in the home seventh to lead 3-2. Sebastian Dos Santos was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Kenly Hunter and Royelny Strop walked to load the bases. Dos Santos scored on a sac fly by Hernandez.
In the top of the ninth, the Rockies put up three runs to go ahead 5-3.
The Cardinals responded with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win in a walk off. Juan Pablo Cabrera singled. Dos Santos followed with a two-run home run. Hunter singled and stole second base. Hernandez plated Hunter on a single.
The Cardinals scored six runs on nine hits. Hernandez was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Hunter was 2-for-3. Dos Santos had three RBI and two runs scored.
On the bases, Cabrera stole his second base of the season. Dos Santos swiped his sixth bag. Hunter stole his 12th base.
On defense, Dos Santos made a throwing error.

As the pitching falters, the St. Louis Cardinals head into the break after going 3-3 at home against two losing NL East squads. Brendan Donovan will be the team’s only representative in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Our history feature details the five prior All-Star Games held in St. Louis.
Cardinals pick four in first day of draft
The Cardinals had four picks in the first three rounds of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft, which began on Sunday night. Their first-round selection was fifth overall, the highest pick since they picked J.D. Drew at the same spot in 1998.
In the first round, the Cardinals chose LHP Liam Doyle from the University of Tennessee. Doyle is a flamethrower with a 70-grade fastball. Doyle was ranked #8 by Baseball America.
Doyle fell to the Cardinals after the Nationals picked high school shortstop Eli Willits, a surprising pick according to analysts. The Angels, who picked second, chose a pitcher outside the top 10 in rankings, which left several of the top ranked picks available. Doyle was the SEC Pitcher of the Year and led the NCAA in strikeouts.
The remaining three picks were Ryan Mitchell at #55, RHP Tanner Franklin, another Tennessee pitcher at #72, and Jack Gurevitch, first baseman from the University of San Diego at #89.
Mitchell played shortstop in high school but the Cardinals will play him in center field. From Houston High School in Tennessee, he is a left handed bat who is 6’2” and 185 pounds. He is ranked 55th by MLB Pipeline.
Franklin was another pitcher from the University of Tennessee, whose coach is Anthony Vitello, a St. Louis native. Franklin was deployed as a reliever this season but the Cardinals plan to try him a starter. Like Doyle, he also possesses a 70-grade fastball. Franklin struck out 52 in 38 2/3 innings in 2025.
The third-round pick, Gurevitch, posted good power numbers at the University of San Diego. He is a left-handed hitter who slashed .371/.477/.681 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI in 2025.
The last day of the draft begins Monday morning with rounds 4 through 20.
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 4-2 on Tuesday at Busch Stadium. Starter Sonny Gray pitched five innings, gave up two runs on five hits, fanned six and walked one to earn his ninth win of the season.
Four relievers threw a scoreless inning each. Steven Matz took the sixth. Phil Maton the seventh, JoJo Romero the eighth and Ryan Helsley earned his 18th save with a clean ninth.
Washington went up 2-0 in the top of the third.
St. Louis answered with three runs in the home half third to lead 3-2. Victor Scott hit a ground-rule double. All-Star Brendan Donovan followed with a two-run home run. Masyn Winn singled and scored on a double by Alec Burleson.
The Cardinals fell to the Nationals by an 8-2 score on Wednesday. Starter Andre Pallante pitched six innings, gave up seven runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked one. Pallante took the loss.
John King relieved Pallante and surrendered one run in 1 1/3 innings. Matt Svanson tossed the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Nationals took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
St. Louis answered with one run in the home first. Willson Contreras doubled and scored on a single by Alec Burleson.
The Nationals increased the lead with a three run fourth and added a run in the fifth to lead 7-1.
In the top of the seventh, Washington widened the lead to 8-1.
The Cardinals scored their second and final run in the bottom of the seventh. Lars Nootbaar doubled and later came home on a single by Masyn Winn.
The Cardinals scored two runs on seven hits. Winn was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Nootbaar was 2-for-4.
The Cardinals won the rubber match of the series over the NL East last-place Nationals on Thursday. Starter Miles Mikolas pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowed two hits, fanned six and walked one to earn his fifth win.
Steven Matz relieved Mikolas and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Kyle Leahy surrendered one run in the final two innings.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brendan Donovan singled. Masyn Winn doubled. Donovan scored on a ground out by Alec Burleson.
St. Louis added a run in the third. Donovan singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Burleson plated Donovan on a single.
The Cardinals posted a five-run sixth to increase the lead to 7-0. Willson Contreras singled. Lars Nootbaar hit a ground-rule double. Nolan Arenado singled and Contreras scored. Nolan Gorman walked. Yohel Pozo singled to drive in Nootbaar. Arenado came home on a force out by Victor Scott. Gorman scored on a sac fly by Donovan. Scott stole second base and scored on a double by Winn.
St. Louis added an eighth run in the seventh on a solo home run by Contreras. The Nationals scored their only run in the eighth.
The offense scored eight runs on 10 hits. Donovan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Contreras was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Winn was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Burleson had two RBI.
The Cardinals lost to the Atlanta Braves by a 6-5 score on Friday at Busch Stadium. Starter Matthew Liberatore pitched three innings, gave up six runs on nine hits and walked one. Liberatore took the loss.
Riley O’Brien relieved Liberatore and threw two scoreless innings. Matt Svanson hurled 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. JoJo Romero pitched one scoreless inning. Phil Maton secured the final out of the ninth.
The Braves were on the board immediately with three runs in the top of the first.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home first. Brendan Donovan singled and scored on a double by Alec Burleson. Burleson came home on a single by Willson Contreras.
Atlanta added one run in the second and two in the third to widen the lead to 6-2.
In the home third, St. Louis cut the lead to 6-5. Burleson hit a ground rule double. Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Gorman walked. Pedro Pagés singled to plate Burleson and Nootbaar. Victor Scott drove in Gorman on a single.
There was no scoring by either side over the final six innings.
The Cardinals plated five runs on 10 hits. Burleson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Contreras was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Scott was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pagés had two RBI.
Scott was picked off first base and had an outfield assist at home plate.
On Saturday, the Cardinals pen faltered as they fell to the Braves in another one- run loss at home. Starter Erick Fedde pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on six hits, struck out one and walked one.
Called up before the game, Gordon Graceffo relieved Fedde and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. JoJo Romero hurled 2/3 of a scoreless inning. Phil Maton surrendered three runs in the eighth. Ryan Helsley yielded one run in the ninth and took the loss.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first and added two runs in the top of the second.
The Cardinals answered with three runs in the home half of the second to tie the game. Yohel Pozo doubled. Thomas Saggese singled and Pozo scored. Nolan Gorman followed with a two-run home run.
St. Louis took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Pozo. They made it 5-3 in the seventh. Gorman singled and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Victor Scott. Brendan Donovan plated Gorman on a single.
In the top of the eighth, Atlanta put up three runs to lead 6-5.
The Cardinals tied the game at 6-6 in the home eighth. Alec Burleson walked. Garrett Hampson pinch ran and stole second base. José Fermín walked. Saggese walked. Hampson scored on a wild pitch.
The Braves regained the 7-6 lead in the ninth and the Cardinals did not answer.
The Cardinals scored six runs on seven hits. Gorman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Pozo was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Donovan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the third straight one-run decision, the Cardinals edged the Braves in the final game of the series to avoid being swept at home.
Starter Sonny Gray pitched only three innings due to one of three weather delays. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits and fanned five before the rain came.
Steven Matz relieved Gray and surrendered two runs, one earned, in 1 2/3 innings. Gordon Graceffo yielded one run in 1 2/3 innings. Riley O’Brien hurled 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Ryan Helsley tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 19th save.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Masyn Winn walked and stole second base. Victor Scott singled and Winn scored.
The Braves tied the game in the third and added two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead 3-1.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth to tie at 3-3. Scott walked. Alec Burleson singled. Willson Contreras plated Scott and Burleson on a double.
St. Louis expanded its lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by José Fermín.
Atlanta cut the lead to 5-4 in the seventh but could come no closer.
The Cardinals scored five runs on eight hits. Burleson was 2-for-3. Contreras and Fermín each had two RBI. Winn scored two runs.
In his return to the lineup, Iván Herrera singled, walked and stole two bases. Winn swiped his fifth bag. Scott stole his 24th bag. Burleson stole his fourth base.
On defense, Burleson made a throwing error. Graceffo had a missed catch error.
The Big Picture
The Cardinals ended their week before the All-Star Break with a 3-3 record at home against two sub-.500 teams. They won 2 of 3 from the Nationals and lost 2 of 3 to the Braves. The team remains in third place in the NL Central, and farther away from the Cubs and Brewers than they have been for a while.
The offense was there, but the issue was pitching. The offense could score runs, but the pitching allowed too many more.
The top offensive performers for the week by OPS were Yohel Pozo (1.117), Lars Nootbaar (1.018), José Fermín (.953) and Alec Burleson (.916). At the bottom were Nolan Arenado (.473), Pedro Pagés (.308), and Thomas Saggese (.237).
Again, pitching was the problem this week with only two starters posting ERAs under 4.00 – Sonny Gray (3.38) and Miles Mikolas (0.00). Matthew Liberatore and Andre Pallante were in double digits. Erick Fedde showed some improvement against the Braves compared to his last few starts, which were disasters.
The bullpen was a little better this week than last. The big hiccup was Phil Maton (11.57) who had a bad outing against the Braves. John King (6.75) continues to be underwhelming out of the pen.
The team is beat up so the upcoming break should be welcome. Nootbaar went on the IL with a persistent intercostal issue and will miss the road trip after the break. Nolan Arenado has a finger issue but has not been put on the IL. Iván Herrera is back and was in the lineup Sunday. Jordan Walker should be back from his rehab right after the break.
The road trip after the break will consist of three games at the Arizona Diamondbacks and three at the Colorado Rockies.

Injury Report
LHP Zack Thompson (left lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 7. Thompson had a setback in his rehab and was sent for an evaluation. He returned to the Cardinals spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida to resume his throwing program. There have been no updates on Thompson’s progress for quite some time.
RF Jordan Walker (appendicitis) was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to June 23. Walker began a rehab assignment in Memphis and moved to Springfield for a couple of weeks. He was expected to return before the All-Star Break but was kept on the assignment “to get his timing back” according to manager Oli Marmol. A return after the break is now the expectation. Since joining Springfield, Walker is just 6-for-38, .158.
3B Nolan Arenado (right index finger sprain) has been in and out of the lineup since June 30. He last exited the lineup early on July 11 and did not play on July 12 or 13.
LF Lars Nootbaar (left costochondrial sprain) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, July 13. Nootbaar had been dealing with left side discomfort for over a week and was removed from games early on several occasions. Herrera replaced Nootbaar on the active roster.
Looking Ahead
After the All-Star Break, the Cardinals embark on a West Coast road trip with the first stop in Phoenix to play the Diamondbacks in a weekend three-game series. The road trip ends in Denver with three against the Rockies.
The team returns home from Colorado for a seven-game homestand to end July. The San Diego Padres come to Busch Stadium for four beginning Thursday, July 24, then the Cardinals will play three with the Miami Marlins.
The month of August begins with another road trip, first to San Diego, then to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers.
After a travel day on Thursday, August 7, a nine-day homestand begins, three each with the Cubs, Rockies, and Yankees.
Blast from the Past
The 95th annual MLB All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The very first All-Star Game took place on July 6, 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The American League won, 4-2.
The All-Star Game was cancelled in 1945 because of World War II travel restrictions and was cancelled again in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
From 1958 through 1962, two All-Star Games were held. From 1963 through the present, the All-Star Game has only occurred once per season.
The All-Star Game MVP award began in 1962.
The Midsummer Classic has been held in St. Louis on five occasions. (1) July 9, 1940 at Sportsman’s Park; (2) July 13, 1948 at Sportsman’s Park; (3) July 9, 1957 at Busch Stadium I; (4) July 12, 1966 at Busch Stadium II; and July 14, 2009 at Busch Stadium III.
This week’s Blast from the Past looks back at each of these five local All-Star Games. Noted is which team won, the score, the MVP (if applicable), the winning and losing pitcher, Cardinals in the starting lineup and reserves and any other notable occurrences.
July 9, 1940 – This was the eighth annual All-Star Game. The National League won the game, 4-1. The winning pitcher was Paul Derringer of the Cincinnati Reds. The losing pitcher was Red Ruffing of the New York Yankees.
First baseman Johnny Mize, and center fielder Terry Moore were starters and the only Cardinals named.
Stan Musial
July 13, 1948 – This was the 15th annual All-Star Game. The St. Louis Browns were the hosts, not the Cardinals. The American League won, 5-2. The winning pitcher was Vic Rashi of the New York Yankees. The losing pitcher was Johnny Schmitz of the Chicago Cubs.
2B Red Schoendienst (replacing injured Eddie Stanky), LF Stan Musial, and RF Enos Slaughter were starters. Pitcher Harry Breechen and SS Marty Marion were also on the NL squad.
Stan Musal hit a home run in the first inning.
July 9, 1957 – This was the 24th annual All-Star Game. The American League won, 6-5. The winning pitcher was Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers. The losing pitcher was Curt Simmons of the Philadelphia Phillies.
1B Stan Musial was the only Cardinal in the starting lineup. Pitcher Larry Jackson, OF Wally Moon and C Hal Smith were on the NL team.
This game was marred by controversy as an investigation found that the Cincinnati Redlegs stuffed the ballot box. Originally the entire starting lineup, except for Musial, were Redlegs. Two of the Cincinnati players were removed and replaced by Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.
As a result of the investigation, fan-voting rights were suspended until 1970.
July 12, 1966 – This was the 37th annual All-Star Game, played in Busch Stadium II in the first year of its existence. The National League won, 2-1 in 10 innings. Brooks Robinson of the Orioles was named the MVP, even though the AL lost the game. The winning pitcher was Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants. The losing pitcher was Pete Richert of the Washington Senators.
No Cardinals were in the starting lineup. Pitcher Bob Gibson, C Tim McCarver and CF Curt Flood were on the NL squad. Gibson didn’t pitch because he was injured.
Barack Obama and Stan Musial
July 14, 2009 – This was the 80th annual All-Star Game. The American League won, 4-3. Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was the MVP. The winning pitcher was Jonathan Papelbon of the Boston Red Sox. The losing pitcher was Heath Bell of the San Diego Padres.
St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and 1B Albert Pujols were in the starting lineup. Pitcher Ryan Franklin was also on the team.
Stan Musial gave the ceremonial first pitch to President Barack Obama, who threw it to Pujols. Obama was the first sitting President to throw the first pitch at an All-Star Game since Gerald Ford in 1976.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-3 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield’s Hancel Rincon, allowed one run in six innings with six strikeouts. Other standouts include Iván Herrera, Leonardo Bernal and Zach Levenson.
Jack Ralston relieved Mathews and surrendered one run in 2/3 of an inning. Chris Roycroft threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Oddanier Mosqueda hurled a scoreless eighth. Ryan Fernandez tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Bryan Torres and Matt Lloyd singled. Torres scored on a sac fly by Gavin Collins.
The Redbirds added three runs in the third. Michael Siani singled. Iván Herrera doubled to plate Siani. Matt Koperniak singled. Torres drove in Herrera on a double. Koperniak came home on a sac fly by Lloyd.
Charlotte scored their only run of the game in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1.
Memphis scored four runs on 11 hits. St. Louis rehabber and designated hitter Herrera was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Torres was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lloyd was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nathan Church was 2-for-4.
On the bases, Church was caught stealing.
Memphis is 47-42 overall, 6-10 in the second half. They are in ninth place in the IL West, five games back of division leader Indianapolis.

The 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game will be played at 3:00 p.m. CT today, Saturday, July 12th, at Truist Park in Atlanta. It will be broadcast live on MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.TV, MLB.com, and the MLB app.
Memphis shortstop JJ Wetherholt is St. Louis’ only representative.
The Cardinals beat the Hooks in Corpus Christi on Friday by the score of 8-1.

Nathanael Heredia relieved Rincon and threw two scoreless innings. Ricardo Velez tossed a scoreless ninth.
Springfield went up 1-0 in the first inning. Noah Mendlinger tripled and scored on a throwing error. The Cardinals led 2-0 in the second on a solo home run by Dakota Harris.
In the top of the fifth, Springfield put up three runs to increase the lead to 5-0. Harris was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Ramon Mendoza singled. Mendlinger walked. Leonardo Bernal doubled to score Harris and Mendoza. Bernal came home on a wild pitch.

Corpus Christi scored their only run of the game in the home fifth.
The Cardinals responded with a three-run sixth to widen the lead to 8-1. Trey Paige walked. Harris singled. Mendlinger singled to drive in Paige. Jordan Walker drew a walk. Bernal was hit by a pitch and Harris came home.
The offense scored eight runs on nine hits. Mendlinger was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Harris was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Bernal had three RBI.
On the bases, Harris stole his 17th run of the season. On defense, Harris made a throwing error. Chase Davis had an outfield assist at third base.
Springfield is 54-31 overall, 11-5 in the second half and is tied with Arkansas for first place the Texas League North.

The High-A Chiefs lost by one run to the Kernels at Dozer Park in the opener of Friday’s twin bill. This game made up Tuesday’s rainout.
Starter Gerardo Salas pitched five innings, gave up four runs on eight hits, fanned four and walked one. Salas took the loss.
Benjamin Arias threw the final two scoreless innings of relief.
Cedar Rapids went up 3-0 in the second inning. Peoria cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the third. Travis Honeyman and Ian Petrutz singled. Josh Kross doubled to score Honeyman.
The Kernels added a run in the fourth to increase their lead to 4-1. The Chiefs made it 4-2 in the fifth. Tre Richardson singled and scored on a double by Petrutz.
In the sixth, Peoria scored again to pull to within a run. Graysen Tarlow singled. Brayden Jobert grounded into a force out as Tarlow was out at second. Jobert stole second base and came home on a single by Won-Bin Cho.
The offense scored three runs on 12 hits. Petrutz and Kross were both 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cho was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Honeyman was 2-for-4. Tarlow was 2-for-3.
On the bases, Richardson stole his 12th base of the season. Jobert swiped his eighth bag.
The Chiefs lost again by a single run to the Kernels in the rain shortened Game 2 on Friday.
Spot starter Tyler Bradt pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up three runs on four hits, and fanned four. Bradt took the loss.
Mason Burns surrendered three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Jawilme Ramirez tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Cedar Rapids scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Peoria answered with two runs in the home third. Jon Jon Gazdar singled. Ian Petrutz walked. Zach Levenson doubled to score Gazdar and Petrutz.
In the top of the fourth, the Kernels added three runs to increase the lead to 6-2. The Chiefs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to shrink the lead to 6-5. Brayden Jobert hit a solo home run. Won-Bin Cho doubled. Michael Curialle singled. Gazdar walked. Levenson walked and Cho scored. Curialle came home on a force out by Ryan Campos.
Peoria scored five runs on nine hits. Levenson was 2-for-2 with three RBI. Chase Adkison was 2-for-3.
Adkison stole his first base of the season. On defense, Curialle made a throwing error.
Peoria is 35-49 overall, 9-10 in the second half, and is in fifth place in the Midwest League West, 2.5 games back of Quad Cities.

The Low-A Cardinals lost to the Blue Jays in a rain shortened 5-3 contest on Friday at Roger Dean Stadium. Starter Leonel Sequera pitched five innings, gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits, fanned four and walked two. Sequera took the loss.
Charles Harrison relieved Sequera and threw a scoreless sixth.
The Beach Birds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Christian Martin doubled. Raniel Rodriguez reached on an error. Cade McGee flied into a sacrifice double play, as Martin came home.
Dunedin put up three runs in the second to take the lead 3-1. Palm Beach added a run in the third to cut the lead to 3-2. Jonathan Mejia singled. Jose Cordoba reached on an error. Mejia stole third base. Martin walked. Rodriguez drove in Mejia on a single.
The Blue Jays increased their lead to 5-2 in the fifth. The Cardinals answered with just one run in the sixth before lightning and the threat of inclement weather came.
Palm Beach scored three runs on six hits. Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mejia was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
On the bases, Mejia stole his 11th base of the season. On defense, Luis Pino made a fielding error.
Palm Beach is 39-43 overall, 7-11 in the second half, and is in last place in the FSL East, 5 games back of St. Lucie

Florida Complex League Cardinals – Off
The rookie Cardinals are 18-27 on the season and are in last place in the Florida Complex League East, 12.5 games back of the Astros.

The Dominican Cardinals edged the Phillies by a 6-5 score on Friday. Starter Xavier Cruz pitched three innings, gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits, struck out three and walked two.
Branneli Franco and threw two scoreless innings of relief. Hendrick Cana surrendered one run in the final four innings and received the win.
The Cardinals went up 2-0 in the first inning. Yeferson Protolatin tripled. Sebastian Dos Santos walked and stole second base. Portolatin scored on a wild pitch. Cristofer Lebron singled and Dos Santos came home.
The Phillies Red cut the lead to 2-1 in the second. They added three runs in the top of the third to lead 4-2.
The Cardinals tied the game with two runs in the home half third. Portolatin was hit by a pitch. Dos Santos tripled to plate Portolatin. Dos Santos came home on a balk.
The Phillies Red regained the 5-4 lead in the eighth. The Cardinals put up two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win in a walk off 6-4. Jesus Perez walked. Michael Cordero followed with a two-run home run.
The Cardinals scored six runs on eight hits. Dos Santos was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lebron was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cordero had two RBI. Portolatin scored two runs.
On the bases, Dos Santos stole his fourth base of the season. Lebron stole two bases. On defense, Portolatin made a throwing error. Cordero had a fielding miscue.
The DSL Cardinals are 16-13 on the season and are in first place in the DSL Southeast Division by one game.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-4 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach’s Nelfy Ynfante, pitched five innings of scoreless relief. Other standouts include JJ Wetherholt, who tripled and homered in his first Triple-A game, Josh Kross, Ian Petrutz, Deniel Ortiz and Romtres Cabrera.
The Triple-A Redbirds were pounded by the Knights by a 10-4 score at AutoZone Park in the first game of Wednesday’s twin bill. Starter Curtis Taylor pitched five innings, gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. Including two home runs. He fanned four, walked one and took the loss.
Zack Weiss relieved Taylor and surrendered two runs in two innings.
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Memphis answered with two runs in the home first. Nathan Church doubled. Luken Baker doubled to drive in Church. Jimmy Crooks plated Baker on a single.
The Knights tied the game in the second, then added two runs in the third and four in the fourth to go ahead 8-2.
Batting second and playing shortstop, newly promoted JJ Wetherholt tripled with one out in the third but was stranded. It was his first Triple-A hit.

Charlotte scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to lead 10-3. Memphis posted their final run in the home sixth. Crooks walked and advanced to second on a ground out by Matt Koperniak. César Prieto reached on an error and Crooks scored.
The Redbirds scored four runs on five hits. Wetherholt was 2-for-4, a triple and home run.
By almost an identical score to Game 1, the Redbirds lost to the Knights in the nightcap of the twin bill on Wednesday.
Starter Zach Plesac pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up seven runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked one. Plesac’s record is now 0-5 as his ERA ballooned to 11.91 on the season.
Chris Roycroft relieved Plesac and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Andre Granillo hurled two scoreless innings following Roycroft. Michael Gomez was next with two unearned runs allowed in 2/3 of an inning. Oddanier Mosqueda secured the final out.
After two scoreless innings, Charlotte tagged Plesac for seven runs. Memphis answered with one run in the home half of the third. Bryan Torres drew a walk and stole second base. After an injury delay, Luken Baker pinch ran for Torres. Matt Koperniak doubled to bring Baker home.
The Knights tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Down 9-1, the Redbirds scored three runs in the bottom of the final inning. JJ Wetherholt doubled to center field. César Prieto was hit by a pitch. Koperniak drew a walk. A wild pitch sent Wetherholt home, as the runners advanced. Matt Lloyd singled to drive in Prieto and Koperniak. The game ended on a ground out by Andy Yerzy.
The Redbirds offense scored four runs on eight hits. Lloyd was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Torres stole three bases.
On defense, Gavin Collins made a throwing error. Lloyd had a fielding miscue and also had an outfield assist at third base.
Memphis is 45-42 overall, 4-10 in the second half. They are in last place in the 10-team International League West, seven games back of first place Indianapolis.

Springfield at Corpus Christi (postponed)
Wednesday’s game in Texas was postponed due to rain. It will be played on Thursday, July 10 as part of a doubleheader.
Springfield is 51-31 overall, 8-5 in the second half and is a half game back of a two-way tie between Arkansas and Wichita.

Peoria added four runs in the third. Jon Jon Gazdar was hit by a pitch. Travis Honeyman walked. Zach Levenson grounded into a force out with Honeyman out at second. Campos walked. Kross doubled to plate Gazdar and Levenson. Petrutz drove in Campos and Kross on a single.
Staked to a 5-0 lead, Savacool couldn’t get through the fifth as Cedar Rapids put up four runs. The visitors stormed past with five runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the lead 10-5.
The Peoria offense scored five runs on four hits. Kross was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Petrutz drove in three. Campos scored two runs.
On defense, Michael Curialle made two throwing errors.
Peoria is 35-46 overall, 9-7 in the second half, and is in second place in the Midwest League West, two games back of Quad Cities.

The Low-A Cardinals edged the Blue Jays in extra innings on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium. Starter Jacob Odle pitched three innings, gave up one run on two hits, struck out three and walked three.
Nelfy Ynfante relieved Odle and threw five scoreless innings on just two hits, a walk and with four strikeouts. Ernie Day hurled a scoreless ninth. Yordy Herrera allowed one unearned run in the 10th but still received the win.
Dunedin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Palm Beach did not score until the ninth with one run to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Deniel Ortiz singled, stole second and third base and scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the 10th, the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead. In the home half, the Beach Birds walked off the win. Sammy Hernandez began the inning on second base. Bryce Madron walked. Anyelo Encarnacion singled to score Hernandez. Encarnacion stole third base and scored on a single by Christian Martin.
The rookie Cardinals fell to the Astros by a 10-6 score on Wednesday. Starter Ronny Oliver pitched four innings, gave up three runs on two hits, fanned six and walked two.
Edwin Nuñez relieved Oliver and surrendered seven runs, five earned, in just 1/3 of an inning and took the loss. Juan Severino threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Bruno Lopez tossed a scoreless seventh.
The Astros went up 3-0 in the top of the third inning. The Cardinals answered with one run in the home third. Facundo Velasquez drew a walk and stole second base. Johnfrank Salazar hit an RBI single.
The Cardinals put up four runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Yoerny Junco walked and stole second base. Daniel Rojas reached on an error. Romtres Cabrera singled to plate Junco. Hancel Almonte drove in Rojas on a single. Almonte stole second base. Paulo Asprilla reached on an error, as Cabrera and Almonte came home.
The Astros responded with a seven-run top of the fifth to regain the lead 10-5. The Cardinals added just one more run in the home fifth. Yancel Guerrero walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Cabrera doubled to score Guerrero.
The Cardinals offense scored six runs on seven hits. Cabrera was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Cardinals were active on the basepaths with eight steals in nine attempts. Bracewell Taveras stole his ninth base of the season. Guerrero and Velasquez swiped two apiece. Rojas stole his eighth base. Junco stole his sixth base. Almonte swiped his second bag. Guerrero was caught stealing.
On defense, Salazar and Rojas committed throwing errors. Velasquez had a fielding miscue. Asprilla had a passed ball.
The Cardinals are 18-27 on the season and are in last place in the Florida Complex League East, 12.5 games back of the FCL Astros.

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Tuesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach LH Braden Davis, pitched six scoreless innings on four hits and struck out 11. Other standouts include Jeremy Rivas, Anyelo Encarnacion, Jose Suarez, Facundo Velasquez, Edward Guribe and Juan Rujano.

Memphis vs. Charlotte (postponed)
Tuesday’s Triple-A series opener at AutoZone Park was postponed due to rain. It will be made up on Wednesday, July 9 as part of a doubleheader.
Memphis is 45-38 overall, 4-6 in the second half. They are three games back of first place in the IL West.

The Double-A Cardinals beat the Hooks on the road by a 7-1 score on Tuesday.
In his 14th start of 2025, Brycen Mautz pitched five innings, gave up one run on four hits, fanned four and walked one to earn just his second win of the season.
Zane Mills relieved Mautz and threw two scoreless innings. Leonardo Taveras hurled 1/3 of a scoreless inning. Luis Gastelum tossed the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Dakota Harris doubled. Ramon Mendoza reached on an error as Harris scored.
The Hooks tied the game in the home second.
Springfield made it 2-1 in the third. Noah Mendlinger walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leonardo Bernal singled to plate Mendlinger.
The Cardinals increased their lead to 4-1 in the fifth. St. Louis rehabber Jordan Walker and Chase Davis walked. They executed a double steal before Jeremy Rivas plated both on a single.
In the seventh, the Cardinals extended their lead to 5-1. Walker drew his second walk. Joshua Baez also took a free pass. Rivas plated Walker on a single.
Springfield added two runs in the ninth for the final score of 7-1. Davis doubled. Baez reached on an error and Davis came home. Baez went to second on a wild pitch. Rivas walked. Baez stole third. Dakota Harris drove in Baez on a single.
The Cardinals scored seven runs on seven hits. Rivas was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Harris was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Walker and Davis each scored two runs.
Walker stole his first base. Davis swiped his fifth bag. Baez stole his 14th base.
Springfield is 51-31 overall, 8-5 in the second half and is one game back of a two-way tie between Arkansas and Wichita.

Peoria vs. Cedar Rapids (postponed)
The High-A Midwest League series opener with the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Dozer Park was postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday, July 11.
Peoria is 35-45 overall, 9-6 in the second half, and is one game out of first place in the Midwest League West.

In the fifth, Palm Beach increased the lead to 3-0. Jose Suarez doubled. Sammy Hernandez singled. Anyelo Encarnacion singled to score Suarez. Rodriguez walked. Ortiz walked and Hernandez was forced in.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 6-0 in the sixth. Cade McGee walked. Suarez and Hernandez singled. Encarnacion plated McGee on a single.
Palm Beach scored their final run in the eighth on a solo home run by Suarez.
The Cardinals scored seven runs on nine hits. Encarnacion was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Suarez was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Ortiz had two RBI. Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The rookie Cardinals were edged by the Mets by a 10-9 score on Tuesday. Starter Hunter Kublick pitched two innings, gave up four runs on four hits, struck out two and walked one.
Keiverson Ramirez relieved Kublick and surrendered one unearned run in three innings. Antoni Cuello yielded four runs in the 1 1/3 innings and was charged with a blown save. Alan Reyes allowed one unearned run in the final 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added three runs in the second.
In the third, the Cardinals cut the Mets’ lead to 4-3. Romtres Cabrera walked. Yaisel Ramos doubled. Cabrera scored on a ground out by Chris Lopez. Facundo Velasquez doubled to plate Ramos. Velasquez advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Johnfrank Salazar.
The Mets added to their lead with a run in the fourth to make it 5-3.
The Cardinals answered with four runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Ramos walked. Lopez singled. Velasquez doubled to drive in Ramos. Salazar reached on a fielder’s choice and Lopez was thrown out at home. Bracewell Taveras singled to score Velasquez. Taveras stole second base, and Salazar stole home. Taveras came home on a ground out by Yancel Guerrero.
The Mets scored two in the sixth to tie the game, then added two runs in the seventh to regain the lead 9-7.
In the top of the eighth, the Cardinals tied the game with two runs. Taveras singled. Guerrero was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Andru Arthur walked. Daniel Rojas grounded into a force out and Taveras scored. Arthur was out at second. Rojas was caught stealing and Guerrero scored.
The Mets broke the tie with a run scored in the home eighth for the 10-9 final margin.
The Cardinals scored nine runs on seven hits. Velasquez was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Taveras was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ramos scored two runs.

The Dominican Cardinals lost to the Bombers (NYY) by a single run on Tuesday. Starter Gabriel Chinchilla pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up four runs on seven hits, fanned five and walked two.
Kriscol Peralta relieved Chinchilla and surrendered one run in 1/3 of an inning. Branneli Franco yielded two runs in the sixth. Reiner Lopez allowed three runs, one earned, in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. Ryan Rodriguez tossed the final 1/3 of a scoreless inning.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 in the second inning. Edward Guribe, Juan Rujano and Cristofer Lebron singled. Juan Pablo Cabrera singled and Guribe scored. Michael Cordero plated Rujano on a single. Lebron came home on a wild pitch.
In the third, the Bombers cut the lead to 3-1. In the top of the fourth, a solo home run by Lebron increased the lead to 4-1.
The Bombers scored a second run in the home fourth to shrink the lead to 4-2. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to widen the lead to 6-2. Miguel Hernandez singled. Guribe followed with a two-run home run.
The Bombers responded with three runs in the home fifth to pull to within one run. They scored twice more in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Cardinals tied the game at 7-7. Lebron doubled and later came home on an error. The Bombers again answered with a three-run eighth to take the lead at 10-7.
The Cardinals partially rallied in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run by Rujano to narrow the lead to 10-9 but came up short.
The Cardinals scored nine runs on 11 hits. Guribe was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rujano was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lebron was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Hernandez scored two runs.
On the bases, Cordero stole his first base of the season. Lebron was caught stealing.
On defense, Hernandez and Guribe both made throwing errors. Sebastian Dos Santos had a fielding miscue. Lebron had an outfield assist at third base.
The DSL Cardinals are 15-12 on the season and are in first place by one game in the Southeast Division.
