I agree. Stratton is ever bit as good as Gallegos and Helsley.

    So, 2-year $11MM contract upcoming?

Will always find it odd that they traded for Stratton at the deadline and then left him off the postseason roster (2022). No injury reported, no public explanation, just ommitted. Then this year his role is low leverage.

If those actions show low expectations for him, by management, then he has proved them wrong, but it makes me wonder if his chances for an extension are low.

2/$11M sounds reasonable to me. That would be half of what Matz makes in one year.

As you probably know, the 2-year $11MM is what Gio got. I’ll be surprised if Stratton gets it unless his role evolves, because as jj said, it just doesn’t seem like he’s viewed nearly the same way by the guys who dole out contracts.

That appears to be the case unfortunately.

So, we have what? About a month or so until the all-star break?

I’d have to think that unless the Cards are either within 4-5 games of the division lead and at least 3rd place OR back to within a game or two of .500 there won’t be much substantive incoming action this season.

Right you are ZTR. If the Cards don’t get a lot closer to the top why would changes become necessary? A lot of our guy’s values are down anyway. Clean out the clubhouse in the post-season and start over. That’s the time to bring in new young faces.

“For starters, the president of baseball operations said that it’s a problem that the Cardinals have so many open rotation spots next year (as many as 4 depending on Matz and Liberatore). He then went on to discuss the internal options, listing McGreevy and Graceffo specifically, before somewhat dismissing them.

Keep in mind that it’s only June, but Mozeliak said that McGreevy has been throwing the ball really well in Memphis but it’s a lot to rely on him for 180 innings next year. He had the same reservations about Graceffo too, especially considering how his injury is taking innings away from him. I believe he even used the word “disappointing”, or something to that effect, to describe Graceffo’s season so far, and that refers to both his injuries and the fact that he had a 4.91 ERA and 5.00 FIP before getting hurt.”

We are in BIG trouble for a pitching staff for next year. It’s gonna be a dumpster dive kind of year – I can feel it coming…..

    Starting rotation next year:

    Mikolas
    Woodford
    Matz
    Liberatore
    ????

The bigger question is how does Mozeliak keep his job? The Cards have fallen behind so many teams in analytics, scouting, etc.

This is what I have been saying. Way too many DH’s on this team.

As they used to say, “offense, hitting and the three run homer.” Err… right?

I’ll go back to it again…the Yadi Haters Club owes him aassive apology, as it’s clear that he was holding this house of cards up for a looooong time.

Well this comment of mine hasn’t aged well. They have given Stratton a shot in high leverage situations and he has wilted. Just goes to show you that not everyone can handle the late innings. There is a mental toughness component that makes the final outs different. All outs are not equal.

Here is a snippet from a Ben Frederickson chat in the Post-Dispatch chat last week. Kind of sums up what we have said on here.

Why is that Mozeliak acts as the sun of this organization i.e. everything revolves around him? He doesn’t want a manager that pushes back, so we throw away 12 years with inexperienced managers. He’s terrible at signing free agents, so they put less emphasis on free agency, which is a huge part of roster building. It’s one dude, who isn’t a relative or even blood. Mo isn’t even Cousin Greg and yet he ends up like Tom Wambsgans.

Succession reference! Mozeliak has made DeWitt a lot of money. Don’t forget that. He has also successfully created a flow of power that goes directly from DeWitt to Mozeliak before it branches anywhere else. He has a trust level and access to DeWitt that few others do, and he protects it. Voices that run contrary to Mozeliak or those in lockstep agreement with him don’t last long. If they get too loud or too powerful, they’re gone.

Looking at this club right now, we need to hire a manager that does have “philosophical differences” to what upper management thinks. Obviously the philosophy that management has is not working. Bring someone in here who brings some fire and brimstone. The laid back approach that we are seeing is hard to watch.

Bernie mentioned this in his article on the Scoops site:

“Anyway … the Cardinals have a productive-out percentage of 22.7% – and that’s the second-lowest in the majors. This team does a poor job of altering its hitting approach based on the situation.”

I’ve read where the Cards org has worked with players on stuff like exit velocity (Donovan) and launch angle (Walker), but never heard anything about working on altering hitting approach based on the situation. If you asked them to come up with something for that you’d probably get a deer in the headlights stare.

or those in lockstep agreement with him don’t last long.

gscott (or anyone), Maybe I need another cup of coffee, but this phrase in the BenFred quote is not registering with me. Help me out, explanation or example would be good!

Fans really need to punish jr for this disaster. It’s the only way to get the geezer to take note.

John Rooney said on the radio this morning that Contreras made some comments after the game (which I hadn’t heard) about loss of confidence and trust in himself, basically acknowledging what we’ve all seen and know. But no mention of what he needs to do to get it back or how to get the team back on track. Bad sign for our #1 free agent pickup and for the team as a whole. I would say the lack of confidence and trust applies to the entire pitching staff as well.

As far as games going forward, I’m now just watching for entertainment value, not in any misplaced hope they’ll make the playoffs.

It’s a tough thing to go through a slump as it does shake your confidence, and confidence is such a big part of success in athletics.

It seems that is the tone set by Marmol. Maybe I am being hyper-critical here, but I never see Marmol show emotion – well, let’s say I rarely see it. He sits there without any leadership instincts.

I think Ollie is what management likes as far as he probably looks at metrics and does the right things based on computer models. But he has no people skills, no intangibles, none of that leadership quality that inspires people to be better than they think they can be.

He manages like it is a computer sim game. Just click here and click there – no need to say anything or inspire – let the numbers do their work.
