That’s not hindsight. That’s barely informed speculation. Murphy would certainly help this team but we have no idea what Walker will do the next 6 years of team control. He could certainly make Murphy look like a midget all by himself. Now if you said that we should have traded for Murphy rather than signing Contreras, I’d have agreed. I’m sure some combo of Gorman/Donovan and Nootbaar/Carlson could have been a start to the talks.

Exactly. Right now a -0.7 WAR player and the future is unknown. In the Cardinals situation, it would have been smart to offload that risk for a certain solution to the catcher problem. We need to solve problems, not roll the dice.
True but Mo probably doesn’t want to see Walker joining Arozarena and Garcia in the AL all star starting lineup next year. Not saying he would be but he could be.
The scary part is if we trade MLB level players for prospects, which I think we should, the guy deciding what prospects is gonna be the same guy who got us in this position in the first place! And if he strikes out like he has in the past we will be in even worse shape next year!
Personally I would not have traded Walker for Murphy. I would have gone with Knizner and Herrera before Doug. That.
We are what, a little over three month into Walker’s career and he is already showing signs of elite power. The defense is brutal, but again, he has played outfield for only a few months. He could very well be winning the home run derby and batting cleanup for the all star team when Murphy is a part time player and near the end of his career.
In hindsight, it’s good we did not mortgage the future for this year as I am not sure we could have gotten enough to even be a .500 team.
The alternative approach to “mortgaging the future” is to trade the win nows, Goldy, Arenado. Nobody wants to do that either. They want to keep the future and keep the now, and magically get the good stuff we need for secondary players and lesser prospects. Its just unrealistic.
At one point, Gorman and Wynn were also on everybody’s no touch list along with Walker. Now not so much. But the reasons why they might not be untouchable anymore are also reasons why they may not be worth what they were. Gorman is not going to fetch now, what he would have then, and probably neither is Wynn. Besides Walker, Goldy and Arenado, we don’t have any gold nuggets, so Mo would be shopping with pocket change.
I never saw a solitary clip of Walker prior to his Big League debut back in March, but after only a bit more than 200 trips to the plate, I’m convinced he can hit. And if they possess the run of the mill good sense to situate him in LF for every game and leave him there so as to etch that OF position on his brain, he’ll be a much more serviceable and adept defensive LF’er than either C. Duncan, Skates, or Holliday, who incidentally were the LF’ers during the last three Redbird WS Champioships. Moreover, after seeing him step in 625 times, I’m convinced that Nolan Gorman will tater-up 40 times in a season prior to his Big League career coming to an end. Maybe more than once…
This is a trivia question that I don’t presently hold the answer to…How many guys have tatered up 40 or more times in more than 7 seasons? And what were their names? And did any of them achieve that feat four seasons in a row?
A lot of speculation we intend to trade for Mariners controllable pitching. They lack middle order bats and are weakest at 2B. That has Gorman wrote all over it.
Yeah, I didn’t want to cheat and I hadn’t looked him up in a while, but George indeed placed on the board no less than 7 consecutive seasons in which he tatered-up 40+ times. That’s pretty impressive. Seven in a row and eleven for his career with 40.
They would then be the Angels with Trout. They wasted a ton of money on an aging, past his prime Puhols and now they have no chance to keep Ohtani.
As much as I’d love to see him in a Cardinal uniform…..
The approaching deadline put some air back in the hope balloon. If Mo and Jr underwhelm it could get ugly. Even the local media homers can smell blood. Ohtani was figurative but they need to do something meaningful.
They should not do as in recent years and as=quire guys in an attempt to get over the hump this year. They are too deep in “debt” to do that.
They need to be realistic about the expiring contracted guys and get what they can for them, or sign them. But the latter is unlikely.
Bottom line, putting it into one word, “sell”.
Trading Gorman a 23 year old power bat who is still developing would be total stupidty.Rather see Nootbaar or Carlson traded instead.IMHO Edman,Carlson,Nootbaar,O`Neill,Moses Gomez,DeJong all should be trade options along with Montgomery,Woodford,Hudson,Gallego,Flaherty,Stratton,Hicks,Cabrera etc;.
This season is toast anybody….THE FO will not admit that but does anyone really see a long winning streak happening?I hope we aren’t going to waste 10 pages of this thread talking about Ohtani. First, the Angels are unlikely to trade him at the deadline and even if they did why would it make sense for the Cardinals to gut their farm system for a two month rental when they have an extremely slim chance at the postseason and an even slimmer chance of signing him to a long term contract? Does anyone really think the dry powder Cardinals are going to fork over a 10 year $500M contract to one player? I don’t either.

I STRONGLY suggest you listen to this. (More ahead into it five or more minutes to get to Mo’s part.) It is very telling about what is going to happen and what will not. Like it or not, this is what they are thinking. It includes trades, Mo’s status and that of the coaches.

I’ll listen when I get home. But my guess is the worst season in 100 is just some things got away from us and the sky is not falling. Said in a soothing voice.
Unfortunately, administration doesn’t see it. Hasn’t for years now . It’s all about the money . Why would a team that will place second in attendance in the NL at seasons end, spend anymore money. It is really unfortunate. The only way this team is going to chance and want to be contenders again, is if we stop going to games and show them our disapproval for the product they are trying to sell us.
I listened to the Mo interview with Kilcoyne on the Scoops site. Get your affairs in order, we’re doomed.
I’d say you’re right, Brock. And I’m guessing fans will eventually stop going to games if the losing continues for 2 or 3 seasons. Attendance in ’80 was 1.4M and ’95 was 1.7M. Fans will stick around for a while, but I don’t think they’ll support a losing cause forever.
