NA wanted out of Denver to get to a contender, so it seems like he would be thinking the same thing again.
The Dodgers are likely to be more of a contender than the Cardinals over the next several years. I can’t think of a reason why Arenado wouldn’t want to be traded to them.

That’s the thing about our win now guys. You get a big haul in trade AND free up their salary for the future free agency. The double whammy.

I didn’t ever buy into the idea that Arenado would ever become a Cardinal, and then he did.

I can’t say he won’t be traded. I’d hate to double down on being wrong about him again.

The Dodgers are likely to be more of a contender than the Cardinals over the next several years. I can’t think of a reason why Arenado wouldn’t want to be traded to them.

First of all, this assumes that Arenado does not believe the Cardinals will do what is needed to contend in 2024 and beyond. That would not be consistent with the message from the front office.

Second, to repeat, no one is reporting the Cardinals are inclined to trade him. In fact, reporting has been just the opposite.

Nolan could want to go to LA. LA could want him. But if DeWitt won’t trade him, none of the rest matters. ALL THREE conditions must be met.

Further, the Dodgers have already acquired a shortstop (Rosario) and two pitchers, a starter (Lynn) and a reliever (Kelly). That is what they reportedly wanted, as well as an outfielder, perhaps. Just maybe they are already done.

The current conditions are very different from Colorado, a team that consistently lost and traded away its best players. Further, the GM personally alienated Arenado and then pretty much had to trade him. The environment between the two sides had become toxic. It was clear that Nolan wanted out.

Every time reporters ask Arenado, he insists he wants to remain a Cardinal. Many articles were written about this as recently as All-Star Game time.

It isn’t zero chance he is traded, but so much has never been written before about something with 1% odds of happening.

I’d say he’s being entirely forthright when he insists he wants to remain a Cardinal, but I’d also say that if he was asked to waive his NTC to become a Dodger, he’d want to be a Dodger more than he’d want to remain a Cardinal…He’d have to be nuts not to.

Sigh… Will anyone explain why DeWitt would want to trade Arenado, backed up by anything other than fan speculation?

I guarantee you that the list of reasons he will stay a Cardinal is going to be longer…

why DeWitt would want to trade Arenado

As part of a trade to land Bobby Miller, for instance.

Of all the trade assets the Cardinals have, Arenado is at (or almost at) the bottom of the list. If the Dodgers insist on Arenado, the two sides aren’t going to make a trade. Trading your best player with 5 1/2 years left on his contract is called rebuilding. The Cardinals are NOT rebuilding.

I don’t think they’ll trade him, but I think he’d rather be a Dodger at present. Again…He’d have to be crazy not to.

1tough, no one disagrees. But again, why would the Cards trade him? Bobby Miller is a rookie. Arenado is a future Hall of Famer still in the prime of his career.

Whether they should or not. Bill wants a .500 club that can sneak in the postseason and get lucky.

Since offense sells tickets you are likely right BW.

Thank you, jj. Selling tickets and maintaining TV ratings matter – a lot. What is called local revenue is more important to the Cards than many other teams.

As of now, even with the bad team, they are still second in the NL and third in MLB in attendance. I think the ratings are still no. 1 the last time I saw the results.

If they were to trade their best player who has 5 1/2 years remaining on his contract, fans would rightfully assume this is a teardown and react accordingly.

Instead, they are going to try to walk the tightrope, not trading their core players.

I agree he is at the apex of his career right now, and there is nowhere to go but down. Take note of the negative dWAR this season for the first time in his career. Its like when you first get a bald spot, its only going to get worse.

The MLB trade value site calculates that for the duration of his contract, his salary will exceed the value of his projected WAR by quite a lot. Which is why the Dodgers are perfect. They only care about the production, and not about how much it will cost. But the same could be said for a few other teams.

Bill has probably already had Arenado fitted for a red jacket.

What about Goldy? He’s a FA-to-be next season. Just let him play out his contract?

I wonder where the Cardinals rank in fans that actually show up to the games? Lol j/k

I mean it’s likely not happening but I think there’s a little smoke here. Like the smoke through a magnifying glass roasting an ant on the pavement.

I do think that they’ll listen but unless a trade just blows them away I doubt they’d ever putt the trigger. I wonder if a rehabbing Buehler might get them interested.

    What about Goldy?

They reigning MVP? Who turns 36 later this season? Whose OPS is off 130 pts from last year? If they don’t trade him by the deadline they might as well try to extend him if he will take a substantial pay cut.

I’m sure if the Dodgers offered Buehler and Miller and another top prospect pitcher for Arenado, the Cardinals would probably pull the trigger. However, the chance of the Dodgers giving up the package to get Arenado is very small.

The Cardinals could turn around and put either Walker or Gorman at 3B so that would cover the position. It would not cover the bat.

Once again, Brian is right about the whole situation.

Just for the sake of accuracy about Arenado’s team control, he’s signed for another 4 1/2 seasons.

Goldschmidt has the 5th highest OPS of all “qualifying” 1Bmen in the majors. Why wouldn’t they try to sign him to a short term extension. I know Burleson and Baker, maybe Walker, could take over 1B, but they are not yet the hitters or fielders that Goldy is. His glove saves some games for the Cardinals every year.

They all can’t be mvp seasons. An mvp season is really an outlier.

I am getting quite the chuckle over the king of “analytics is the root of all evil” using them to try to justify why Arenado should be traded. Thank you for making my night!

But seriously, all players’ skills decline in their 30s, at a time their salaries are traditionally highest. But the Cards knew this when they acquired his contract. Not exactly a news flash.

Also, jj is correct about 4 1/2 years remaining rather than 5 1/2 years. I double-counted the option, which by the way, Arenado himself exercised not long ago to stay with the Cardinals another year. However, it does not change the point. They aren’t trading the cornerstone of the team.

When you are 13 games under before the end of July it is absurd to be scattering rose petels ahead of anyone, incuding your “cornerstone”. Mo has to lead with something besides spare parts and a 6-9 rental or he won’t be raking in much of a pot.

Maybe Mo will discover the next Bridich, we can hope for that.

The FO doesn’t want to be viewed as “rebuilding”, so they must add proven mlb pitchers, otherwise they are just as dysfunctional as today. Say one thing, do another.

Any club can trade off their current value for future unproven talent. That’s traditional rebuilding. But it’s not unheard of for young controllable pitching to take a couple of seasons to be solid at mlb, IF they eventually get there.

Without adding proven mlb arms before next season, there is zero reason to keep 2025 FA Goldschmidt.

If they keep their win now guys, they need to add win now pitching.

Yes, exactly. Now or this winter, and we are competing with contenders to get it. We are not going to get it trading spares and I have zero faith in BDW spending the money or Mo spending wisely this winter. We won’t win with more Matz’s and a couple John Lesters. Which is why I think that approach is just digging a deeper hole.
