I could really see them going the route of trying to fix Alex Manoah or trading for a guy like Drew Rasmussen, who is out until about the All-Star break next year with TJ surgery. They want young controllable pitching and could try to buy low on guys like this. Knowing Mo and his history it would be Rasmussen and they will trade Herrera for him and Herrera will be a 10 year All-Star in Tampa.
As the deadline approaches it looks like Mo will hang on to the bronze busts and Febrege eggs, at least for now. Contenders are looking elsewhere for big ticket items. We’ll see what Mo does with his rentals and the box of odds and ends. Then we will have a couple months to take stock before heading into the off season.
I think we will see most of the expiring contract guys cleared out Monday and Tuesday. It hurts us a little bit that the Mets have decided to sell. Montgomery and Flaherty don’t compare to Scherzer and Verlander.

Who’s going? Flaherty, Monty, and Hicks probably for sure? A “maybe” might be DeJong, Carlson, Burleson, Helsley, and Stratton? A probably not might be Edman, Donovan, Herrera, Knizner, and Contreras. A no for sure would be Goldy, Arenado, Walker, Gorman, and Donovan?

Looks about right bccran with the exception of Helsley. Not sure they will move both Helsley and Hicks.
I just do not know if they will get many 2024 difference makers when pushing out rentals and a number of mediocre players.
I would hope that DeWitt initiates an After-Action-Review to look over the past five to seven years. Determine what has gone right, what could have gone better and what they need to do different. I fear the Front Office is going to give us more of the same if they do not make changes to their approach … in multiple areas. This analysis needs to be done before the season ends so they are ready to go for the off-season.

Mo is safe – Marmol is safe. We don’t have to like it but we do have to live with it.
bc – add Mikolas and Matz to the no list because reasons plus Nootbar & O’Neil. 2-3 on the ‘maybe’ list are gone we just don’t know who and I would add Yepez, Baker, Pallante, Verhagen, and Liberatore.
The Scherzer trade seems a little off somehow. and it is thought by some that the Mets won’t be trading Verlander because its not the fire sale it seems. Meanwhile, Rangers show how its done.
The Mets had traded their closer Robertson to the Marlins, who are competing for a WC slot, for a couple low level prospects. This made perfect sense, without signaling that the Mets were conducting a fire sale. They are out of it this year. Robertson’s contract is expiring and he is age 38, so perfectly reasonable to get something for him. There is nothing fire sale-ish about it.
But then Scherzer expressed concern about it and wanted to talk to management about it. The next day he waives his no-trade to allow his trade to the Rangers. The deal included Scherzer opting in for 2024 with the Mets picking up a sizable chunk of his salary. The Mets get a AA level good hitting infield prospect with pedigree, but it sounds like they mostly were offloading a guy with some reputation for being a pain in the butt who was being a pain in the butt.
Meanwhile the Rangers seem uninteresting in just being ‘competative’. They’ve got a shot at a flag so they give up a faberge egg level prospect for two years of Scherzer at reasonable payroll cost. In postseason, the quality of the front of your rotation is all important. That is a FO that understands how baseball works in real life and is committed to winning rather than being ‘competative’. Meanwhile, Mo wrings his hands and clutches his pearls.
I hope we can work a deal to keep Hicks. I would like to see one of Monty or Flaherty extended as well, but you have to think they would prefer to test the free agent waters.
DeJong could have been DFA’d in April as far as I am concerned, although I do appreciate his defense – something we lack this year.
My guess is at least one of the younger guys will end up being like Lane Thomas, good players elsewhere, but that is the chance you take. I am talking about the group of Carlson, Yepez, Baker, Burleson, Herrera – those types.
Herrera is a guy I hope we keep, but he really needs to “quiet” his swing. He is way too out of control on his approach at the plate. Get him more in control and work on contact and he will be very good.
