A montage of a smiling, playful, William Dexter Fowler??? Certainly someone is likely toying with we Cardinal fans. That would be like Red Sox fans being treated to a slideshow of a jubilant Bill Buckner right after the 1986 World Series and cub fans to an array of smiling headshots of Steve Bartman following the 2003 NLCS.

DF, in the midst of an awful season, did everything he could to get his boss relieved of his duties. Blamed his boss for his own failures. “Class act”.

Can’t field. Can’t hit. Doesn’t hustle, although he whines and says he just appears to not be be hustling because he’s so smooth, I guess. Also whines about other stuff that isn’t his fault. What’s to like???? The Cardinals FO can be so irritating, making them also hard to like at times.

Players like Fowler happen when Mo gives the manager no input on his roster.

What you are saying is not a newsflash. The reason that Fowler first became a Cardinal and is still a Cardinal to this very day is because of Mo’s decisions (with considerable input from DeWitt, no doubt). Does anyone not already understand that?

Bizarre that a GM gives his field staff no input on players needed or players that need to be shed.

I find it bizarre that you have the mistaken impression that these people live in soundproof bubbles that isolate them from what is happening around them.

From a Derrick Goold Winter Meetings article just this week:

“Shildt also got to be a part of the roster-making discussions in the team’s suite.”

Goold spent time with Fowler and his wife in Las Vegas and wrote an in-depth article as a result.

For those who only care about minor matters like WWU, Fowler will be attending a friend’s wedding in Mexico then.

Pugs, I won’t take offense to you taking shots at Fowler. I have lobbed my own shots at him. He appears lazy when in the outfield. He couldn’t hit his way out of a wet paper sack last year. He certainly hasn’t done anything recently to endear himself to the fans.

My points of contention have to do with the CONSTANT bashing him by the same posters. Also, when posters don’t acknowledge that he hit fairly well in 2017. There seems to be a few that don’t give thought to the fact that he is human and he does seem sensitive.

I always considered Cardinals fans to be thoughtful people that would give consideration to the human being playing the game and not just use EVERY opportunity to deride the person.

BW – you and I both have friends inside the organization. You choose not to pass along things you hear, and I choose to a times. Different styles. Neither to be criticized by the other, please. I have heard from multiple sources that MM had zero input into the 25 man. I can’t speak to anything more recent with Schildt.
    Let’s leave it at that.

bccran, it is way past time to let Matheny go.

forsch, thank you for your balanced comments.

The only time I mention MM is when someone takes a shot at him. Like DF did in Las Vegas recently by saying how depressed he was in 2017 (referring to pressure from the corner office). It’s been covered by the press, in an article on this thread, and in the PD.
Give me a break. $82.5 million, hordes of adoring Cardinal fans tuning in almost every game, and he’s “depressed” (and typically blaming others for his depression and resultant poor performance).
He calls out MM? Did MM call him out publically? Don’t think so.
But Mo did, so where there’s smoke there’s fire.

bccran, you were the one to bring up Matheny yesterday. No one said anything about him other than you, so there was nothing for you to “defend”. Another recent example. The other day, you injected Matheny into a discussion about the new performance coach when it had no relevance to the subject. You say one thing, but your posts tell the story. Matheny is gone. He has a new job. He moved on. Let’s do the same.

Happy to move on. Will not bring him up. But reserve the right to respond if someone takes a shot at him.

IMO some of the malcontents outside of the FO who influenced and were emboldened by the Matheny decision, are still around. There has been plenty written about who those people are. Matheny got a raw deal because the FO added high-priced failures and whiners to the roster and forced Matheny to put them on the field.

Agree or disagree, IMO bottom line = Matheny was the scapegoat for the ineptness of the FO.

Don’t get me wrong. Matheny should come up when relevant to the discussion. In reference to a point you made above, he was mentioned in the Goold article posted last night in the context that Fowler felt he had lost Matheny’s confidence. Well, considering your suggestion that Matheny apparently wanted Mo to get rid of him, that would seem to line up. I don’t consider Fowler’s comment to be “calling Matheny out”. He just stated what already seemed quite obvious – the two apparently did not see eye to eye. And Fowler let that affect him.

There is a positive article on Fowler in the PD today.Just printed proof that Fowler will start in RF no matter how him or any other OF plays.Team doing everything possible to salvage Fowlers contract IMHO.I understand that..thats business. But the best player should play..not the one with the biggest paycheck.Competition for RF…LMAO what a farce.

Is there another situation like this in MLB? Or is the Cardinal front office the only dysfunctional one?
There should be some serious consideration to part ways with Mozeliak. I think his stock has fallen and he knows that, accordingly he’ll do anything now to save his job.

MO’s making sure that Fowler plays to cover up his huge blunder just ain’t right from any direction.

I will bump up the front office thread as it appears your concerns are much broader than just Fowler.

    From today’s PD:

“I was depressed,” Fowler said. “That’s what I was. I got mad that I let it get to me. I should be mentally stronger than that. I shouldn’t have let it weigh me down as much as it did. But I was. I was depressed. I was depressed.”

Using depression as an excuse is so damn bogus. Anyone can claim that they are depressed… anyone at any time. He was having a bad day that lasted the whole season. He played despite being depressed? No. No. Someone that is depressed would plead to have someone else play.

Shildt played him despite DF being “depressed”. I don’t buy this feeble bs for one second.

Dexter Fowler once again proves it is all about him and not about the team actually winning. He wants the team to affirm their commitment to him, because overpaying him by $50 million isn’t enough. They should allow him to single-handedly cause the Cardinals to miss the playoffs, because he wants to be in his happy place.

All I can say is that I am happy for those who have never had to deal with depression or other mental illness in your family or workplace. Unfortunately, that can also leave one less enlightened on its seriousness. Since we already had this discussion a page or two back, I will stop there. The tough-talking may now continue.
