Great job Kitty as Pugs calls him
June 3, 2024 at 9:19 pm #254987Dodged a bullet. By all rights the Cardinal manager should have been made to pay for a lousy decision. He ought to shine Kittredge’s cleats for bailing him out.

jj-cf-stlParticipantJoJo manages the Gorman error.
June 3, 2024 at 9:44 pm #254989Would’ve been nice to have added some padding to the 1 run cushion after the E-5. It’s never easy.
June 3, 2024 at 9:48 pm #254990
jj-cf-stlParticipant2nd and 3rd stranded again.
Fat changeup to Bregman. BSv, Tied.
June 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm #254991Our trio at the back end seems to always have just a one or two run lead to work with. It was bound to break at some point. They have really done great thus far though. We need more offense.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWhoever the next righty is below Kitt, Oli chose JoJo instead.
June 3, 2024 at 10:02 pm #25499533 stolen bases given up by Herrera and his pitching counterpart at the time. 2 caught stealing. Not quite up to Yadi’s standards.
June 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm #254996Loutos gets another taste of the Big Leagues as he offers up an excellent breaking pitch and still gets burned by the future HOF’er.
June 3, 2024 at 10:05 pm #254997I am at tonight’s game! Went great for awhile! Very poor managerial decisions on when to take out pitchers tonight! Not unusual for Oli but still frustrating!
June 3, 2024 at 10:06 pm #254998Haha…Make sure you have a talk with the whiz-kid, Steve!
June 3, 2024 at 10:07 pm #2549991TD – the double given up by Loutos is almost certainly caught by Carlson or Nootbaar. Probably Walker too, but I’m not going to say certainly with him. Burleson is just slow at running those things down.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGive up 7, odds aren’t good.
June 3, 2024 at 10:09 pm #255001Let that one get away. Houston 1, Redbird manager 0…
June 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm #255002Agree @jnevel. Burly had a horrible jump on that ball. Just an average read and jump and that ball is caught. Still too hard of contact to allow though. All around sloppy defense that inning with Winn showing a lapse in concentration again.
June 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm #255003Maybe, J. It was hit pretty well and slicing, but you’re right, Larry Walker would have had it…Haha!
June 3, 2024 at 10:53 pm #255004Ouch. Let one get away tonight….
Get ’em tomorrow.
June 4, 2024 at 7:17 am #255008Having mixed emotions. Want the Cardinals win but if they do we have to put up with this manager beyond this season. I have never criticized a Cardinal manager before but this guy makes decisions that a little league coach would avoid.
Why is Donovan batting 6th. Why has Winn been batting 8th most of the season. Why does Ollie sit Winn as much as he does. He is only leading the Cardinals in hitting and ops but is leading the major leagues in runs saved on defense.
Why are rookie pitchers making their major league debuts in late close games. He has been lucky so far but it makes no sense. It is like he is conceding the game if we trail in the late innings.
Why are key bullpen pitchers idle for 3 and 4 games while Ollie is exerimenting with the rookies.
What is the point in dropping Aranado to 5th instead of 4th. Why ever bat him 3rd with Goldy in the lineup.
Why does he sit multiple regulars in the same game. Why is he constantly changing the lineups. Roles play a key part in keeping player heads straight.
I begin to think he is gaining some sense then he makes a bonehead decision. He is obsessed with platooning. He brought a left handed pitcher in the game to face a great hitter who is 11th in the American League in average against left handed pitchers.
June 4, 2024 at 8:02 am #255012Actually I think he has been pretty lucky with some of his bad decisions. Some say I would rather be lucky than good. I think maybe Ollie is one of those guys.
June 4, 2024 at 8:43 am #255015I don’t think being “good” is part of his job description.
June 4, 2024 at 9:05 am #255017It’s past time for ownership to put a great team on the field. Not an ‘ok’team that can play .500ish baseball and compete for a WC spot in the bloated playoffs.
Yes, baseball is a business but it’s way more than that. If the current owners can’t or won’t understand that then they need to sell the team to a person / group that does. There may be no crying in baseball but there is passion beyond the dollar Bill.
June 4, 2024 at 10:05 am #255021I have to be the lone Ollie defender on here even if I’m not really an Ollie defender. Overall, I think he’s been mostly fine this season. There is an easy and good answer to all of Sooner’s questions above. I may not agree with every answer, but there is a good answer and since Ollie is a different person than me, I expect us not to agree every time.
Just a couple real quick answers though. Winn has had an ailing back all season. So he doesn’t play every day to rest it. With the bullpen, almost every game we’ve played has been close – especially in the 6th-8th innings. You can’t use the same 3 or 4 bullpen pitchers every single game. In my opinion, Ollie has overused those 3 and not pitched his “rookies” enough. Ideally every game wouldn’t be so close and it would be easier to manage the pen. But that’s not been the case at all. I don’t really have much to say about the order of the lineups. I don’t think it matters much. I’d probably like to see Winn higher up given how he’s hit, but he’s also a rookie who is struggling with mental mistakes and moving him up in the lineup may cause more pressure on him.
I do agree that I wanted to pull Gibson out earlier yesterday. He looked like he had lost it. The end result ended up ok, but it could have become a quick disaster. But I’m sure that Ollie was thinking that he had just used his 6 best relievers the previous day so he didn’t want to burn them all up again if he could just buy a couple more outs from Gibson.
June 4, 2024 at 10:51 am #255025The bottom line last night was that Jo Jo got smacked around after being good almost all year. Sometimes that happens. We are starting to see some leaks in the big 3 bullpen guys though. As jnevel pointed out we can’t roll them out there every night because they will get gassed. We are going to need more quality depth out of the pen to get through the rest of the year because our starters rarely go more than 5 or 6 innings.
