RHP Kyle Gibson (4-2, 3.60) vs. TBA

Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJune 2, 2024 at 9:27 pm #254868It’ll be like old times against the former NLC rival Astros. Most of us can recall some intense battles at Minute Maid park in both the regular and post-season. I’ll never forget the show put on by Pujols and Beltran in the ’04 NLCS. It looked like Godzilla vs. King Kong…
June 3, 2024 at 12:33 pm #254907The struggle for .500 continues with the next chapter in the Astros’ saga.
June 3, 2024 at 12:44 pm #254908Yahoo Sports/MLB says Verlander is going for the Astros in this one.
June 3, 2024 at 1:50 pm #254909Good. It’ll be fun to see Verlander work. At 41 years of age he’s becoming a modern day version of a RH’ed Warren Spahn, who I believe was the greatest LHP’er of all time. On the way to collecting 368 W’s Spahn was a 20 game winner a total of 12 times and I don’t think there’s any question that the great lefty would have won 400 games had he not missed 3 seasons while serving as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during WW 2. He participated in both the Battle of the Bulge and the capturing of the Ludendorf Bridge and was awarded both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. “Hooks” was a genuine American Hero and a baseball pitching legend.

jj-cf-stlParticipantTwo wins this series would finish the road trip at 5-4. TBD.
June 3, 2024 at 2:03 pm #254912Thanks for the history lesson Dom!
June 3, 2024 at 2:26 pm #254915You’re very welcome…You may know this, but Spahn also worked 15.1 innings during a turn he took in July of 1963 in which he labored through 201 pitches at age 42. He was the losing pitcher of decision when on pitch # 201 Willie Mays took him deep in the home half of the 16th at Candlestick Park to give the Giants a 1-0 victory over the Braves. Juan Marichal improved his W/L record to 13-3 with a hard earned W in which he tossed 227 pitches. They don’t make ’em like that anymore…
June 3, 2024 at 2:58 pm #254916Guys asking out after 80 pitches—-???
June 3, 2024 at 3:28 pm #2549185 days later he pitched a complete game shutout
June 3, 2024 at 3:29 pm #254919Yeah, it’s simply a different space in time. If you really want to get crazy, look up some Big League records for IP’ed in a season. Some guy named “Old Hoss Radbourn” is credited for working 678.2 IP’ed in 73 turns for the Providence, Grays during the 1884 season in which he compiled a W/L record of 60-12…There’s a chance he may have been a Civil War Veteran, so he probably considered that to be an easy workload…Haha!

CF Mike Siani LJune 3, 2024 at 3:43 pm #254921Glad to see Donovan back on the field. Carlson’s deteriorated to the point of being less of a threat than was Scott. I’m expecting a back muscle tweak to Dylan prior to Walker returning before “Skywalker Bobblehead Night” on June 6th.
June 3, 2024 at 4:05 pm #254922The Astros aren’t that good this year. No reason we couldn’t win 2 out of 3.
Speaking of not good the NL only has five teams over .500. The Cardinals are currently in the final wild card spot with a losing record.
June 3, 2024 at 4:13 pm #254924The FO, meaning Mo, has a problem now with Carlson. After being mostly pretty bad for quite a while, be has flatlined. So what to do? First rounder to whom was issued the lowest available uni number because he launched some Texas League fastballs. Two more years of control, but his arb salary is significant to be paying for a paperweight on the bench.
June 3, 2024 at 4:24 pm #254926I have been thinking about that as well. If he doesn’t pick things up the second half of the year it will be interesting to see if they non-tender him or not, which would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
John Denton posted a pic yesterday of Carlson hitting RH in batting practice in advance of facing a RH pitcher, however, he did hit LH during the game. I see no reason why he shouldn’t try hitting RH full time. The results couldn’t be any worse.
June 3, 2024 at 4:29 pm #254927I think he can still be optioned. Learn how to hit in the minors.
June 3, 2024 at 4:31 pm #254928Carlson is one of those guys that’s on the list of players who simply never got close to expectations or is yet to do so.
Carlson
Walker
Nootbaar
Edman
O’Neill
Flaherty
Hudson
Reyes
Hicks
and
Oscar Taveras (very sad)r/Esteemed Rat
June 3, 2024 at 4:39 pm #254929Rat – Why Edman? I think I understand an argument for listing all the others. But Edman has probably exceeded every expectation that was had for him and then some.
June 3, 2024 at 4:53 pm #254930Nootbaar & Edman have probably exceeded expectations.
June 3, 2024 at 4:55 pm #254931Jnevel, yes, I agree. Edman is borderline. But he hasn’t come close to batting .300 since his rookie year, however. He’s been fair, but not good. That’s why I list him.
June 3, 2024 at 4:57 pm #254932Nootbaar has not even come close. A career .240 hitter.
And I don’t care what his BATIP is or what his +DRR is or what his fWOG is or what his WRL is.
June 3, 2024 at 4:59 pm #254933Yeah, no one knew who he was and he averaged over 90 runs scored and 30 SB’s over 3 full seasons in addition to being awarded a GG while manning up at 3 difficult positions. He also plays the game of baseball really smart, and never once did I ever see him dog it. Edman exceeded anything that was ever expected of him.
June 3, 2024 at 5:03 pm #254934Nootbaar has not even come close. A career .240 hitter.

His OBP is .349. Surely you understand what OBP is don’t you?
June 3, 2024 at 5:13 pm #254935Nootbar’s another guy. I still remember laughing the first time I ever heard his name mentioned which is hard not to do… He’s an 8th rounder who, while not to the extent of Edman, has in my view exceeded expectations. Like LA mentioned, you can’t argue with the respectability of a .349 OBP. He’s a solid OF’er, can swing the bat a little and is a decent compliment to almost any Big League roster.
