“ I still think runs are pretty important in the game of baseball…”
Several years ago I had a database of all time baseball stats. I came up with my own stat that was basically runs scored plus runs driven in minus home runs divided by plate appearances. I thought that would be a pretty good stat to assess offensive value.
All of the usual suspects were at the top of the all time list, like Ruth, Aaron, Williams etc. The one thing that might skew the stat a little is guys who played on better teams would have an advantage. But then part of the reason they were on better teams is because of them! 😀
Bikemike…I attended a Cardinals/Astros game at the Astrodome in 1983. I neglected to take notice of the numbered section of the parking area before entering for the game and when the game was over it took me almost an hour to find the car in that circular parking lot that surrounded the venue. For a minute, I thought it may have been stolen…Haha!
Man I saw the averages of our bench players – whoa, talk about a terrible bench! Crawford leads the motley bunch at .152, with Fermin checking in at .150, Carlson at .133, and Pages, or “Pa-hez” at a robust (not!) .056.
Oh, but I bet there is good leadership there. 😁
Alvarez with a no doubter. One of the top 5 pure hitters in baseball. Even as good as the Dodgers FO has been they traded him away in a bad deal.
Yeah, and it’s not only the all time great sluggers that stand out in the runs scored category. The guys like Rickey, Lou, Maury and Joe M. all crossed HP at an alarming rate and led their teams to WS championships.
Yeah BikeMike they can lead how best to keep a seat warm. I do see leadership as a little value, but both Carp and Crawford feels redundant.
That happened to my cousin and I in Kansas City one time 1TD after a Royals – Blue Jays game. In fact I think Scott Rolen made his Jays debut that night after the hissy fit he and TLR had the year before.
Anyway, we had a rental car so we were not that familiar with it anyway, and could not find it! We walked around for a good half hour or longer. Fortunately it had remote access (this was in 2007 I believe) and I kept clicking the button. Finally we saw the lights flash and that is how we found it.
I also did that at the Grand Canyon with a rental carrying all of my wife’s belongings. The Grand Canyon uses animals as their parking lots and we couldn’t remember which one we parked in. We walked for 30+ minutes thinking all of her things were stolen with the car.
Haha!…Yeah, Bikemike, panic began to set in when we couldn’t find the car in that huge parking lot. After about an hour most of the other cars had cleared out and we finally spotted ours. I’ll bet we walked close to a mile. I should have placed one of those little brightly colored fake flowers at the top of the radio antenna…Haha!
The ball coming off Gorman’s bat just sounds different. I’m guessing he swings a heavier bag which is part of the extra sound though. Ohtani also swings a heavy bat and has that same sound.
Yeah, Albert, and it’s not just audible, but also the visual. The baseball just explodes off his bat when he connects. It just leaves in a big hurry.
That’s a good description, JJ. A “let off swing.” It’s entirely effortless and the baseball still takes off like an ICBM leaving it’s silo.
