The disparity between how our Cardinals perform in the opening game of a series vs the last game is glaring. In opening games we’re 10-5, outscoring our opponents 69-57. And in closing series games, we’re 2-12, getting out-scored by a whopping margin of 66-35. I’m having difficulty thinking of reasons why this is occurring.

    Mikolas.

If he can just get through five without giving up five then we may have a chance as long as the offense keeps humming.

    Leadership. Specifically, the manager.

The Cardinals hoisted themselves out of last place with last night’s W.

The last time the Cardinals got creamed was Mikolas’s last start. Hopefully the juju lasts another day and he can log a win. Whoever was sticking needles in the Red Sox doll last night, keep doing it.

Checking the standings at the quarter pole, I also happened to notice that the KC Royals are 8 games over even and only 1.5 off the pace in the ALC. And the Astros have won 6 in a row and are now only 4 back in the ALW. In any event, it’s nice to check the standings and not see the Cardinals dead last in the NLC.

Din-din today will be another Hungry Man’s Roasted Turkey TV dinner. Along with an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew. And for dessert a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream.

Then tonight me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch tuning in to BSMW for the Red Sox/Cards game. Along with a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar. Then about the late innings it will be time for the late night snack, a bowl of chili that I made last night and a piece of the Strawberry Pie I brought home from the Amish restaurant yesterday. Then another cigar whilst we watch the final innings from Sportsman’s Park and then tune in to Reds/Doyers game from Doyer Stadium. Then late tonight, after the late games are over, it will time for an episode of Mannix and another cigar.

Sure would be nice to win this one tonight. But with a name like Kutter Crawford something tells me we won’t be seeing alot of curveballs.

Well, off to a good start after last night. This 3 game set may not live up to the glory of the ‘67 WS, but it’s fun to watch so far. No Bob Gibson or Jim Lonborg on either team for sure. Was glad to see our old man TO have no impact on the outcome. Reminds me of when he was with us.

Something tells me there will be a lot of hits today. Crawford is no ace, his current ERA belies his career W-L record of 11-17. I think he’s due a spanking. Just hope Mikolas can keep it to the low single digits.

With a ’24 ERA north of 6.00, Mikolas is fortunate to have salvaged 3 winning decisions this season, one of which was his last outing in the final game of the recent 4 game set vs. MIL. He’s been a weak link in the 5 man this season. Hopefully he can work to erase that distinction with a decent turn tonight.

Looks like this is the current primary lineup, and I mostly agree with it unlike a lot of Ollie’s choices.

Quite an odd first name for our opponent on the mound, “Kutter.” Have to say when it was time to name our son the name “Kutter” was not considered. I wonder if he throws a cutter? Probably mostly a mid-90s fastball as that is how all young pitchers are today. Maybe someday we will see a young pitcher come up named “Heater”.

And the Cubs just walked off the Pirates by the score of 1-0. A one out double by Bellinger and a single by Morel plated the only run of the game in the last of the 9th. Would be nice to see the Pirates take Sunday’s game and win three out of four at Wrigley.

Back to cleaning my bathroom now……..

Cubs win with another masterpiece by Imanaga. 7 shutout IPs, 7 Ks, 1BB, and 4 hits. I doubt he would have wanted to sign in Stl, but he would have been a great signing.

By the way……when Bellinger scored the winning run in the last of the 9th it was a bang bang play at the plate. It really couldn’t have been any closer. The Pirates challenged, but the call was upheld.

    Phooey……..

I didn’t even know who he was until I just now looked him up. Them’s impressive numbers for a 30 year old 5-10, 175 lb. rookie. He’s putting more Zeros up on the board than a WW 2 Japanese fighter plane…Haha!

Before Miles last start he had thrown 20 IP (4 GS) without issuing a BB. Yet, he allowed a 4-digit ops during that span, built on 6 HR’s.

His last start he issued 3 BB’s and no HR’s. Has he decided to nibble more? Along with the walks he allowed 6 total bases on 6 singles.

Maybe its an outlier, or maybe an adjustment to his approach. Curious to see how willing he is to pour strikes in there tonight.

1TD Imanaga is a low 90s thrower who gave up a lot of HRs in Japan, so many scouts werent confident in him. Interestingly, ZIPs the projection system LOVED him. The Cubs have modified his game plan from low strikes in Japan to throwing high fastballs. Despite only being low 90s, his fastball has really good spin and appears to rise. He then has a splitter he releases from virtually the exact same spot and the combo bamboozles hitters. I recommend watching one of his games if you can.

JJ, I think Miles stuff has been so hittable thisbyear that if he throws a lot of strikes, hitters swing away. He probably does need to nibble to be somewhat effective.

Sprinkle in some inside purpose pitches on the hands… put them on their heels a bit more.

Yeah, the lineup looks good. I’d have thought he’d have shuffled it around after 14 hits had pushed 10 runs across.

Our local SABR group has quite a few Cub fans. At our monthly luncheon last Wednesday a guy had an Imanaga jersey on. So far he is a great addition to that club. I still think they will pull away from the pack and eventually win the NLC.

Mikolas is an average starter at best. Puts together a nice game sometimes but not consistently.
