They can’t wait too much longer. Last year the season was effectively over before the month of June and this weekend’s performance at home vs. the White Sox tells me there’s no reason to believe this year won’t be a rerun. I don’t think they’ll ever have any success with this manager. I can only hope that the bizarre extension was some sort of early severance package.

Last year the team started 10-24. So, this team is a little better. The problem is that the offense has simply evaporated.

If the offense was even average I think you could reverse the record and we’d be right in the thick of things.

I think most on here had this team pegged as about a .500 team and agreed that the FO did not do enough in the off-season for whatever reason – ownership limited them, they plan to make a couple of moves at the deadline or they just didn’t read the tea leaves on an aging Goldschmidt and Arenado.

It’s really frustrating to watch though…

As I said in another thread……

The reason the Redbirds aren’t any good is because of all the players they counted on that have not worked out.

    Flaherty
    Hudson
    Alex Reyes
    Hicks
    Liberatore

    Taveras was lost.
O’Neill (had one good year then always hurt)
    Carlson
    Walker
    Nootbaar
    and others.

Coupled with Goldschmidt not being worth a hoot anymore, well, we are what we are.

Nothing positive will happen until we have new owners.

I don’t think it is ownership as much as it is management. But the point is well taken, as DeWitt likely finds it difficult to fire the management group that was so successful for so long.

    @BicycleMike stated:
    “First it was firing Shildt.”

Absolutely correct! Take a committed Cardinal lifer with a proven record and can him over Zoom because you have thin skin and can’t take honest feedback.

This was telling of the real state of things then and 2023-4 results aren’t too surprising.

they had all chances to win that game before it began to rain. bases loaded no outs in that situation id sent the runners all of them on a squeeze play laid down a bunt down first. worst that would happen goldy threw out at home but 1 out bases still loaded

That’s not the worst that could happen. If the batter misses the catcher steps on home for the force and then throws to third or first for the DP. If the bunt just goes into the dirt in front of the plat, same thing. Bunts it too hard to the pitcher, 1,2,3 DP. Then there are the possibilities if its a foul tip caught or a pop up caught, fair or foul. Then there is the chance of a pitch out. Step on home and get a DP or a TP on the pitch out. Guy goes too soon and pitcher steps off is another possibility. A safety squeeze eliminates some of the possible disasters, but with the force at home, the chance of the runner being out is substantial, as is a subsequent DP.

Trying a squeeze with the bases loaded is a low probability play. It could have been tried with Burly at the plate, 1st and 3rd with nobody out.

Yeah, it is risky. You got to get the ball down and with the force out you lower the odds. Still I would have applauded them for trying it with the way they have struggled to generate traditional offense.

That BenFred guy says the Cardinals failed in front of 43,000, which is nearly a full house. Does anyone know if it was nearly a full house?

‘Spahn and Sain and pray for rain’ – our version is ‘Gray and pray’.

This was a good read in my opinion

Bling, the box tells me 43K for Sunday’s game. I noticed the box for Friday’s game shows 34K, so Sunday’s figure’s probably accurate.

Its probably right for tickets sold. I wasn’t watching so I don’t know what the stands looked like. It was a nice day for baseball.

It was full of sheep. The number is likely accurate. A lot of wasted cash flushed down the drain.

I may be wrong, but I’m getting the impression that attendance is down. I’ve noticed quite a few box scores with figures at or a little above 30K. School’s not out yet, so those numbers could improve in a few weeks. At any rate, the stands have looked skinny on the TV broadcasts since July of last season.

The box score attendance is actually tickets sold. Lately, there seem to have been a vast number of no shows.

I could see where people would show up on a nice Sunday just doing some fun recreation. Whether the team is any good would not be much of a consideration.

So, when I take a trip to StL to catch a series I always go early – catch BP.

Sure, it’s more fun if the Cards win but a day like today at the ball park is great. Soaking up the atmosphere, hanging out somewhere downtown after the game with other fans in from out of town are some of the funnest times I’ve ever had. I don’t ever consider it wasted money.

Yeah, those numbers in the box scores aren’t turnstile clicks and I noticed during several games that I viewed on TV as far back as the middle portion of last season that I would have estimated as low as 15 to 20K fans in the ballpark. If they continue to play poorly it’ll get worse as this season plods along. Although times change, I’m of the belief that human nature stays basically the same and I can recall attending many games in the mid to late 70’s in which I was one of way less than 10K sitting in Busch Memorial Stadium. If they continue to display a lousy team people will stop paying to see them play. No one shows up just to park and eat a hot dog.

They don’t open the gates to watch BP and fielding reps anymore until an hour and a half before first pitch and it’s been that way for quite some time. I can comfortably say that at one time I averaged attending at least 25 to 30 games a season and if I walked in to the ballpark an hour and a half before first pitch, I considered myself as at least an hour late…Haha!
