May 4, 2024 at 4:48 pm #250695If the Cards end up losing on Saturday – and odds are they will – this becomes a must win game as far as I am concerned.
If the Cards luck out and end up winning on Saturday – and odds are they won’t – this becomes a must win game as far as I am concerned.

May 4, 2024 at 10:14 pm #250739Liberatore will start Sunday
Having been used as a one inning guy lately, he’s not stretched out. I hope he is going to be an opener on a pitch count so he doesn’t get hurt. That would mean somebody else would have to provide some innings.
The Sox won only their 7th game of the season Saturday. It’s really going to be sad if they win their 8th Sunday.
May 5, 2024 at 10:52 am #250767Who else out there is still bullish on our Birds? Let today be the commencement of a great run of successful St. Louis Cardinal baseball. Just keep winning series’. Goldy, Gorman, Nooty, Donovan…..the whole lot of them start hitting today and they keep it going until season’s end. The batting slumps that all hitters have to occasionally endure are out of the way now. And the starting pitching keeps plugging along until we unearth that diamond in the rough down at the farm. Somewhere down there is a young starting pitcher who’s full potential will all come together when he’s brought up to the show. And who knows, maybe we even acquire a dandy starter before the deadline hits. And the bullpen……not much tinkering needs done to that marvelous group.
And what’s for din-din? I arrived home later than expected from yesterday’s wedding, so I’ll have what I had slated for yesterday’s din-din, minus the catfish fiddlers, as I don’t like to eat fish leftovers over 24 hours old. So stepping up to the plate will be wild plump shrimp cocktail, chicken noodle soup, deviled eggs and 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies.
May 5, 2024 at 11:10 am #250769I’m trying to figure out why they are starting Liberatore today rather than using, say, Robberse on Tuesday. Do they think that the Chisox can be beaten with a bullpen start? Maybe, but this sets up this spot in the rotation to go two more times rather than one before the 21st. And with Romero and Helsley having been used today, they have a short bullpen for a bullpen day. Perhaps they don’t think Robberse is ready. Or maybe they think Gibson needs more time off?
Glad to see Fermin get a start, and fingers crossed Carlson is ready to go….

Liberatore pitch count is 50 per Ollie.
May 5, 2024 at 11:32 am #250777I’d guess there’s a little extra incentive for a W today only for the reason that losing a series at home to the worst team in the Big Leagues would be a bit humiliating.
May 5, 2024 at 11:47 am #250780The Cardinals have slipped another notch to 29th in runs scored. Meanwhile the A’s have won 6 in row and the Phillies now boast the best record in the Big Leagues. I’d have to guess that Thomson’s done a nice enough job in Philly to keep the locals from vandalizing his home…
May 5, 2024 at 11:48 am #250782Liberatore pitch count is 50 per Ollie.
I guess it’s no big deal here, but I think Ollie should probably not be putting out any information in advance. Always keep the opposition in the dark as much as humanly possible. And with those 50 pitches, I’ll set the over/under on Libby innings to 2 2/3 today.
May 5, 2024 at 11:54 am #250784Yeah, the smart money has the hitters taking and fouling off, going as deep in the count as possible. Get to our pen early so they can face the end of the bench crowd.
May 5, 2024 at 12:07 pm #250789Yeah, the current Redbird manager couldn’t pronounce the word gamesmanship with a spokesperson. When TLR was around, you couldn’t get a lineup until there was a pregame meeting around HP. Even the color of Fredbird’s socks was a closely guarded state secret.
May 5, 2024 at 12:17 pm #250792A must win. And I mean a MUST win if the Redbirds are going to do anything in 2024.
Din-din today will be a couple of those Beef patties in the broiler along with 2-3 ears of sweet corn that I got at the grocery yesterday. Along with an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew. And then a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. And then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch watching the WhiteSox broadcast.
And since the Reds don’t start until 4:10 est today, who knows, there might be another cigar while I finish watching the Orioles and Reds.

May 5, 2024 at 12:26 pm #250795Not thrilled with Goldschmidt hitting 3rd but looking at the other options about the only thing I’d change would be to swap Arenado and Goldschmidt…
It’s been pretty slim pickings for the offense and there is only so many ways to shuffle non productive players around…
May 5, 2024 at 12:35 pm #250799
jj-cf-stlParticipantWow, he stacked the righties vs their lefty. Lefty bench for us.
May 5, 2024 at 12:43 pm #250801The over/under today for Goldschmidt striking out is 1.5. You taking the over or under?
I’m taking the over. He’s pretty much worthless nowadays.
May 5, 2024 at 12:48 pm #250803I’m actually excited to see Carlson play again this year. Let’s see if he can bring something fresh to this team and get the team on track. Maybe he can play well enough to clearly deserve that starting CF job.
May 5, 2024 at 12:49 pm #250804Carlson in the 5 slot. The whiz-kid’s gonna force ’em to work to Arenado.
May 5, 2024 at 12:50 pm #250805I’m very happy to see Fermin playing against the Lefty over Gorman as well. Gorman needs a few days off to work on his swing and Fermin deserves the platoon spot for 2B at this time.
May 5, 2024 at 12:55 pm #250806The Cardinals are now 1-4 in xtras this season.
May 5, 2024 at 1:10 pm #250810Siani was trending upwards so it is unfortunate for him that Carlson got healthy right now. If Noot does not start to pick up the pace, maybe we put Siani back in and Carlson in right.
I have always liked Liberatore as a starter more than in the ‘pen, but with signing the old guys he was relegated to the relief corps. I hope he does well.
With only 7 wins I assume the Sox have not won a series yet. It would be yet another low point in a season plus of lows if they take this series.
Din-din here will be a couple of cod fillets cooked on the grill, with rice and Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuits. Oh, and add a big tossed salad to that please. 🙂
May 5, 2024 at 1:13 pm #250811I’m not a fan of the bullpen game in this instance. I would rather they had moved the starters up and thrown Robberse on Tuesday. Part of me likes that they are choosing to keep developing him prior to moving him up. But now we burn out the pen after using quite a few of them yesterday.
May 5, 2024 at 1:17 pm #250812
jj-cf-stlParticipantThompson pitches himself out of the pen and they look to Libby.
May 5, 2024 at 1:17 pm #250813Toeing the Chicago rubber this afternoon will be 6’6 245 lb. southpaw, Garrett Nolan Crochet. Garrett turns 25 late next month and was born and raised in the beautiful state of Mississippi where he was drafted right out of high school in 2017 by Milwaukee in the 34th round. Garrett declined their offer and instead ventured north to attend college in the great state of Tennessee. Garrett’s patience paid off to the tune of a 4.5MM signing bonus, as he was drafted 11th overall in Round 1 of the 2020 draft by the ChiSox, where he steered clear of their farm system and plowed his way right to the big club. Garrett missed the 2022 campaign due to Tommy John surgery. He sports a 97mph fastball, 84 mph slider and keeps batters on their toes by mingling in a 91 mph cutter now and then.
