Right now there’s no question that Siani transcends Burleson in order of importance to this team, but the desperate need to field a capable defensive CF’er is alleviated when either Eddie or Carlson return.

I agree, but as noted in another thread, the Cardinals don’t really use their bench guys. Easier to carry a no-hit guy whom you have no expectation of ever hitting, than to carry a guy whose only (potential) value is his bat, and he can never get enough reps to get his bat going because he is a DH/1B.

Nice to log on and see certain totally irrelevant comments being ignored.

Well, right now the manner in which this 26 man is constructed is a joke. They’re packing around 3 C’s because they’re forced to have two C’s in the lineup every day in an attempt to generate some offense. The CF’er’s only RBI came in today’s game as a result of a successful squeeze play. This team can’t score any runs. Only the ChiSox and A’s are worse.

LACardsFan, we look at Burleson’s current value to the Cardinals much differently. He’s the current primary DH versus RHP starters. And when he doesn’t start, Marmol seems inclined to use Burleson often as a pinch hitter against RHP. He’ll get plenty of ABs. Even when Carlson and Edman return.

I happen to like totally irrelevant comments. Bill Lee was one of my all time favorites…Haha!

Well yeah. But looking at our lineup coming into the season, did you really expect only two guys to have an OPS over .700?

    – Goldschmidt’s career average is .903, he’s now at .602
    – Arenoado’s career average is .868, he’s at .715
    – Gorman’s career average is .756, he’s at .647
    – Nootbaar’s career average is .771, he’s at .616
    – Donovan’s career average is .761, he’s at .692

And then Walker, who was supposed to be an all-world bat, got demoted.

I don’t know how you plan for 6 guys hitting 100+ pts below their career average OPS at the same time.

And of course, your top two CF’s have missed the entire season to date, and there is nobody in the OF in Memphis who is major-league ready.

Now, the CF situation – if they had brought in Adam Duvall, would have at least been covered.

Instead, they wasted a roster space on Matt Carpenter, whose “leadership” has been MIA all year as well.

    Mud, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a thread stay totally on-topic.

Haha!…Didn’t they have a retirement ceremony for Carpenter during the last homestand?

Edit…And yeah, all the bats went south simultaneously.

Well, I missed that. As did the alleged 34,000 people in the stands!

I think Herrera needs to be added to the list of underperforming hitters. Pages is here taking up space specifically so Herrera’s bat can be gotten into the lineup. In 62 PAs he is hitting .200 with a .622 OPS.

Agree. Hererra’s bat has backed up.His defense is poor. Would demote Pages and Burleson when Carp and Carlson return. Siani is a dead bat but provides some versatility and speed valuable in late innings. Don’t see the sparks needed to get this team going internally.

Cards current record protracts out to about 75 wins. Maybe enough not to finish last. Pitching is doing it’s part but the offense went unaddressed in the off-season in fact it was subtracted from.
This is what they are. A middling 500ish team.

I think Fermin is here to relieve Donovan of infield duties while he is an outfield starter. Once Carlson or Edman return, I expect Fermin to go before Burleson. I think absolutely everyone would have to be back healthy before Burleson would go, and even then it could be Carp or Crawford before him. Not saying I agree with all that. Just that’s how I think it will go.

I hate this for Carlson. I’m not his biggest fan, but this 1st half was a golden opportunity for him, until Walker flipped him on his head wrecklessly.

For those who devalue Edmans league avg bat, how do you like replacement value or worse in CF now? Sometimes that glue guy is more valuable than he is given credit for. Would love to have had Edman vs this stretch of lefties faced.

Carlson is supposed to start a rehab assignment either Tuesday or Wednesday.
