Willie looks kind of somber – they said he took it hard hearing the news about Whitey.

Kyle McCann blasts his first ML homer to right off Lynn here in the 5th and Oakland grabs a 2-1 lead.

Lynn gives up a home run because he does that a lot.

New Oakland pitcher likely coming in the 6th. Good for us because we can’t seem to hit Sears. But most of Oakland’s bullpen has been good this season.

Oh my is this park empty. There can’t be more than 5K in attendance. No wonder they are hightailing it out of town. Those poor food and beer vendors are going to go broke working here.

Lynn seems to have issues with the mound more than any pitcher I have ever seen. He often looks down at the mound after a delivery like something is not right.

Yeah, they don’t draw at all there. Even as a kid I never understand the A’s moving to Oakland. Seemed like in Kansas City they had a wide area to draw from, whereas in Oakland you would always be in the shadow of the Giants.

They announced a little over 3000. So that’s the paid attendance. Less actually present.

Yeah Jimenez coming in out of their pen. Sears was tough, Jnevel. Wouldn’t mind getting him before the deadline hits. Our big bats need to get going…this is ridiculous. If I’m Oli I would be at the point of not worrying about hurting veterans feelings.

Goldy does seem to be swinging a little better lately. Arenado is definitely getting hotter. So there’s some hope. I’m not sure about Walker. He still looks mostly scared.

A lot of people aren’t aware that McGee won his second NL batting title while he was an Oakland A in ’90. When he was traded over to the AL from the Redbirds in August of that season he had already collected enough PA’s to qualify for the NL batting crown. He won that ’90 title with a .335 NL avg. with Eddie Murray of the Dodgers placing second at .330. It was an odd setup which had never happened in Big League history. George Brett led the AL that season with a .329 avg. but because McGee’s avg. for the entire season was only .324, neither leagues leader led the entire Big Leagues in avg. that season. That honor went to Eddie Murray…Haha!

Somehow all of that worked out. We were basically gifted 2 runs.

Now if we just keep Pallante and Gallegos out of the game maybe we can hold this lead.

I was just thinking that in all of the zillion baseball games I’ve attended, I have never caught a foul ball. As a kid I would have killed to get one. In this park and with this few people……I think I could corral one. Only one problem…..it really wouldn’t be that big a deal now and I’d probably just flip it to the first little kid I saw….who most likely wouldn’t even say thank you. Probably just better to sit in my seat and drink Wild Turkey shots with beer chasers.

Cards recapture the lead 3-2 on a pair of sac flies.

Like you Pugs, I’ve also never gotten one. And yes, if I got one now, I’m certain to give it away.

Has anybody here ever caught a foul ball? We’ll get one in our next life, Jnevel. I vividly recall going to Milwaukee County stadium as a kid and just praying for a ball to come my way, but there were always people everywhere, thus hampering your odds significantly. Amazingly, I never even got close to a foul. I’d give almost anything to recapture a piece of that enthusiasm we had as kids.

Someone mentioned Willie looking a bit somber with Whitey saying goodbye today, Pugs, and it occurred to me that he’d won that second NL batting crown the year he was traded to the team the Cardinals are playing tonight. At any rate, I thought it was interesting that the cicumstances in which the batting titles were awarded that season had never occured before or since. Ain’t baseball great?

The only time I was really trying much for one was when I was a kid and we would go to Cards minor league games. My brother did get one of those once. There were probably around the same amount of people at those games as the number in Oakland tonight.

I have never gotten one either, despite attending a lot of games in quite a few different stadiums.

One time though as a teenage after a Cardinal game in the ‘70s, my buddy and I were hanging out behind the Cardinals dugout well after the game. I think it was Barney Schultz’ son who looked up at us and says “you guys want a couple of baseballs?” Of course we said “Sure!”, and he flipped us each a ball. At one time I had Stan and Joe Torre’s autograph on that ball, but they faded over time.

I think that will be it for Lynn.

Even though we all want Kitt, JoJo, and Helsley, I’m guessing we’ll see Gallegos for 1 of these.
