CF Victor Scott LI’m beginning to think the only thing that’ll help this team is a bit more chatter concerning whether or not Burleson oughta’ be in there.
I think we should accept that the Cardinals are not paying Goldy $26 Million to bat 7th or 8th. He can stink as much as he wants.
Well, I don’t reallty think you can slot him lower than 5th or 6th at this juncture. He’s eventually going to hit and it’s my guess that there’ll be a stretch of a week or two when opposing pitchers are going to feel the heavy burden of the law of averages tipping the scales toward some significant offensive production. I’m guessing he’ll go on a rampage before too long.
On a down note, we had a couple of pitchers from back in the day pass away this weekend. Kenny Holtzman, whom I’ll always remember as a cub, but went on to be on 3 World Series winning teams with the franchise we’re squaring off with tonight and yet another one with the Yanks. And Fritz Peterson, whom may be best known for his famous wife swapping escapades with teammate……forgot who…..I want to say Jim Kekich? This was not merely your basis garden variety one night stand wife swap, but rather a total swap where these two pitchers swapped wives for good…….a trade that surprisingly Frank “Trader” Lane had no involvement in whatsoever.
What’s for din-din tonight one may ask? Split pea soup with a lot of ham, grilled cheese sandwich, Dutch apple pie a la mode and lemonade.
I’m calling this one 6-3 Cards with Scott getting off the proverbial schneid with two ringing doubles.
Yeah, I did not really expect Ollie to be bold enough to venture away from his standard lineup. The guy is just not dynamic nor an “outside the box” thinker. Even though putting a lineup with your best hitters at the top is “inside the box” thinking, he can’t grasp reality.
That was Mike Kekich that Fritz Peterson made the wife swap with Mr. Pugsley. Back in those days my parents would renew my Sporting News subscription annually as my birthday present, and Jim Murray wrote a hilarious column after that wife swap news came out. He had all kinds of proposals that would be like, “I am sending my best friend my wife, $5000 and a dog to be named later for his sports car and television set.” 😀.
Oh, for din-din I am meeting my daughter at Panda Express for fast food Asian cuisine. She is super busy working full time and taking an IT certification course. But we try to find time on occasion to grab a bite and catch up with things.
I’ll be darned, Pugs. Holtzman was born and raised in U-City of the StL. area and was a mainstay of all of those 3 consecutive Oakland A’s WS Champion teams. He was also a pitching household name for my entire youth.
Wow did not know Holtzman was from the greater St. Louis area, TD. He put together some real nice years and I think he even tossed a no-no with Chicago…..I want to say vs the Dodgers. I was only like 5 years old at the time, so my memory may be a bit foggy on that. Any yes indeed it was Mike and not Jim Kekich, BicycleMike….thanks. And your Panda Express totally rocks, BicycleMike. Their chicken teriyaki is superb.
I also recall him as a Cub during the late 60’s when he and Jenkins formed up a potent left/right, one two punch against our Redbirds, Pugs. By the time he was winning championships with the A’s, I was driving age and actually liked the Oakland teams a lot because they seemed to go against the grain of the established status quo. They were also really good…Haha!
I could looks this up, but did the Cubs trade Holtzman for Billy North? Seems like that was the deal but I am not sure.
North was one of those speedy outfielders in the mold of Otis Nixon and that type. I do recall Holtzman having his birthplace as “St. Louis, MO” on his APBA card.
Pugs-Pro TIP. Get your pan hot and throw in a bunch of butter. Put a couple halves of these white side down, couple slices sharp cheddar, couple halves white side up. Smash and flip brown the other side. Perfect grill cheese with no crust.
I had to look it up, Bikemike, but I had a hunch Billy North was wrong. Holtzman went from the Cubs to the A’s in exchange for none other than Rick Monday in a trade that took place during the ’71-’72 offseason. While there he joined a pretty formidable rotation that included Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue and Blue Moon Odom. It also didn’t hurt to have the guy with the handlebar cookie duster in the BP.
Rick Monday was one of my favorite players in those days. My first baseball games were at Municipal Stadium in KC.
He played for 19 years, which seemed like forever when we were still young. At any rate, Rick Monday was another household baseball name and will always be immortalized as a dedicated protector of the primary symbol of this country.
Thanks for the grilled cheese tip, KeepComingBack! I will definitely try that. Yeah, Rick Monday was cool. Just thinking of famous names that had days of the week in their name. Just off the top of my head:

Wednesday……my sister from The Addams FamilySince I’ve been giving some regular minor league updates lately, I just wanted everyone to be aware that our pitchers today have given up 0 runs total in all our games.
That’s a first. Well, a first since last Monday anyway. Hopefully that trend carries over to the Big League birds tonight.
Liberatore not available again tonight, but it sounds like he may be by tomorrow.
Middleton is making some progress and could be back soon. Everyone else is likely to be out until at least May.
Yeah. Sounds like he’s going to throw a few on the side tonight to see if he’s healthy enough to be back.
We shouldn’t need him. Sonny is going to strike out the side for the first 8 innings straight on the minimum number of required pitches (72) and then Winn is going to take the 9th.
Bling will probably like the bunt. For me, I don’t like giving up outs in the first inning to a fairly bad pitcher who’s right handed with Nootbaar up. But hey – we at least got one run. Hard to know if we would have gotten more.
I assume that was an attempted bunt for hit, and not a true sacrifice? With 1 out and a runner on 1B? Yeesh.
