BicycleMike may be on to something with his Meyer perfect game call, as he keeps mowing us down with the greatest of ease. I doubt that he’s even generated one beed of sweat yet here today.
I can recall when Jurgenson and Billy Kilmer were always competing for the starting Redskin QB job. Both of those guys were characters. Especially Kilmer.
Most probably recall Sonny Siebert as a Cleveland Indian, but he actually pitched for the Redbirds for 1 season in 1974.
Sonny Siebert grew up in Bayless just down the road from where I grew up. When I was a kid he had family still there. When Sonny as a major league player came into St. Louis for the 1966 All Star Game it was a huge deal in the neighborhood. My dad was part of the group of neighborhood men who went to the game. I would have been just 8 or 9 at the time and don’t remember all that, but I do remember when he played for the Cardinals a few years later. We had moved a few miles away by then and didn’t have any connection to the family by then.
Yep, Jurgenson and Kilmer were both decent QB’s, TD. Many quality QB’s from that era. Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, John Brodie, Joe Kapp…..to name a few.
Neat story, Bling. Sonny Siebert’s real first name is Wilfred……who can blame him for changing it to “Sonny”.
BicycleMike called the Meyer Perfecto wayyy back like in the 2nd inning. If it indeed comes to fruition, I can’t begin to tell you how immensely impressed I’ll be.
With one swing of the bat, Gorman puts an abrupt end to Meyer’s Perfecto, no-no, shut out and hopefully “W”.
Well there goes the perfecto and even the shutout. Thought we might witness history here. He needed to get that ball in a little more on Gorman and he would have had a strikeout. Had it down but out over the plate.
Now Walker doubles.
You gotta like what you see from Winn. Looks like he is maturing quite quick. Might be hitting in the two spot before the season is over.
Watching Winn’s plate discipline from last year to this year, is like looking at Danny DeVito standing next to Wilt Chamberlain.
If anybody is interested, here is a link to the complete radio broadcast of Siebert’s no hitter as an Indian in 1966. I listen to it now and then just to hear the announcer, Jimmy Dudley, a good example of the prototypical old time radio play by play man.

Gibson has done what he needed to do – settled down and gave his club some innings after getting shelled early.
Thinking about the ‘66 Cleveland Indians – they had a nice rotation: Sam McDowell, Luis Tiant, Sonny Siebert and Steve Hargan. They were not an easy series for opposing hitters.
Remember Don Meredith on the old Monday Night football broadcasts? “Turn out the lights, the party’s over”.
Now Fernandez needs to take one for the good of the club. He’s the guy the rest of the way – need to keep the bullpen strong with no off day and a good Phillies team coming in. Especially since you don’t know what you will get from Gray on Tuesday.
I sure do remember that bikemike, right up there with a few others like Jim McKay’s The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat.
Yeah, I had no idea who he was and still recall seeing all those K’s on the back of McDowell’s card after opening a pack of Topps and thinking, “This guy’s really good!” And most of us remember watching Tiant work in the epic ’75 WS.
I remember Cosell telling Dandy Don during a MNF broadcast that he was behaving in a manner that was a bit “Truculent”…There was a slight pause before Dandy retorted with, “I’ve never lent you my truck, Howard”…Haha!
Indeed, “Sudden” Sam McDowell was the King of K’s back in the day and that Monday Night football crew were truly epic….Howard, Alex Karras, the aforementioned “Dandy” Don Meredith and Frank Gifford, were the most amusing television crew ever assembled. As an influential small kid at the time, I think they greatly influenced and shaped my way of thinking.
