    I wouldn’t worry about Goldschmidt.

I’m not worried about Goldschmidt. What bothers me is that we sign a player for big, big dollars, then he immediately starts laying down on us. There’s something unethical going on. That’s the basis of my complaint.

    He isn’t laying down.

I would view Goldy as slightly disappointing. His slash line isn’t bad but it isn’t representative of a guy who is usually a top 10 MVP vote getter. Sadly those days may be behind him. His strikeouts are what are so alarming to me. Sometimes he looks totally lost.

However what isn’t behind him is his great defense. He has made our IF defense immensely better over last year and run prevention is a big reason why we are in first place right now. It is debatable if he is worth $26M a year for the next 5 years but I am still glad he is on our team.

OrtaWasOut with a very revealing post (post #74) explaining Goldy’s downward spiral. Maybe he can somehow reverse his troubling trend and recapture a healthy dose of his previous excellence? Luckily, we have some pretty interesting 1st base candidates matriculating in our system who should be ready to pounce on the possible opportunity in a couple of years if needed.

I heard it on Rush Limbaugh recently, Wooster. Funny that you brought up the possibility of me being an English professor, because back in the day, I don’t think I ever crossed paths with one who had an easy time giving me their stamp of approval to proceed onward towards an elevated English curriculum. I always passed, but only by the skin of my teeth…….seems cRaZy doesn’t it?

Yes Mr Pugs, you really are very articulate and do have a natural ability at conversation. I salute you sir! I did ok with school and was just naturally pretty good with it. Didn’t do well in the courses that required actually bearing down to learn it. Such is youth huh!
Been really thrilled to see our Cardinals looking like they might win it this year!

To shed some light on the positive, it is great to see Wong run with his opportunity. He has an outside chance of 6 WAR (BR)

Wong just appears to be the kind of player who plays great defense (obviously) but has very high peaks and very low valleys with the bat. Interesting to see it even out over the course of a season though

Kolten is also the kind of player who could ride the confidence of a great full season into something much more the next year. Very happy for Kolten

It is disappointing with Goldschmidt. I haven’t looked into his home away splits too much from the past but the NL West has a lot of hitters parks, and Arizona has always seemed to be one of them

Hopefully this season is an outlier though. We didnt have a lot of faith for Dex to turn it around either, but his OPS this year is right in line with his career average

Let’s keep this good play going and win the central!

Not to take this off subject but I don’t think that is a proper use of the term matriculating. You could probably properly say we have some guys who could be matriculating to the major league club soon but the guys already in the minors have already matriculated to the minors.

You’re too kind, Wooster. What’s on our pregame din-din menu tonight, gentlemen. Mine is pretty basic …..BLT sandwich, chili, cottage cheese, and some Breyers peanut butter choc ice cream.

We just had Marconi pizza around 3pm. I guess it was our dinner. Being half way between lunch and dinner I will call it “Linner”! That could be it for us. If I get hungry later I will explore the frig.

As much as I love Waino, I think we should get younger in the rotation next season. If he is willing to spot start, relieve, and just be injury insurance I think it is a good idea. Helsley, Cabrera, Gomber, PDL and Rondon should be given chances to earn starting jobs in spring training. In particular, Helsley has looked impressive in his stints so far, and makes me want to see him pitch longer. Rondon should get some AAA time at Memphis, and be ready to start in St Louis in June or July. I also anticipate the FO getting another #4 or #5 type pitcher with options left, a la Gant.

We need to acquire a quality left-handed pitcher by free agency or trade. It is the missing piece of the puzzle.

An ace is truly what we lack, although Flaherty has made great strides this season, and could be close to that status. But a good left handed starter would help us combat a lefty leaning hitting team.

That word was made famous by Hank Stram.

He was funny and made it a classic. “Just keep matriculating the ball down the field, boys.”
