This long stretch of games certainly will require some creativity with the bullpen. I think everyone but Miller and Cabrera pitched this weekend, and I assume Cabrera will be called on for a spot start. It’s hard to imagine that Woodford wouldn’t have been a better add than Mayers at this point.

Woodford that gave up 6 runs in 6 innings yesterday? In AAA?

Cabrera has better stuff and has pitched better lately. Not sure why we would need a spot starter.

How many times has the Cards’ offense been shut down by a pitcher straight out of AAA with seemingly mediocre stats this year? The PCL might be a tougher run environment than MLB right now, considering the use of the juiced baseball. At least for a one or two start pitcher, anyway.

Waino goes today, Flaherty tomorrow. Hudson and Wacha pitched Saturday, Mikolas and Ponce yesterday. So either Hudson or Wacha go on short rest Wednesday or they go with a spot start. One can assume that’s going to be Cabrera, which probably will amount to a bullpen game unless he’s on.

Amazing how far Matt Carpenter has fallen in one year – from MVP candidate to bench warmer behind a rookie utility player. And it’s not like Edman has torn it up to earn the third base position, as his OPS+ is only 91. It’s just that Carpenter has been so bad that most anyone that can put a ball in play now and then can get some playing time ahead of him, plus when Edman does hit he seems to pick the big moments.

Goldschmidt has fallen quite a bit, also. He hasn’t been much better offensively than Carpenter since the middle of May. There were runners in scoring position nearly every time he came to the plate over the weekend. Carpenter is only good if he’s taking salsa like he did last year. Goldschmidt???

Well, Goldschmidt was the National League Player of the Month for July, so yes, he has been better than Carpenter – just not recently.

Woodford had a chance at being added, but his most of his recent starts say he doesn’t deserve it. And we came out of a potential pitching black hole double double header pretty well with the first 3 starters covering 20 2/3 innings. I really thought we’d have quite a few unavailable pitchers today. BUt only PDL, Mayers, and Helsley are likely in that category.

Goldschmidt goes from nothing to MVP caliber, then back again literally overnight. How is it that he can turn his offense on and off again seemingly at will? Why is he having the worst year of his career? Why was he so good in Arizona, and not here? Part of my ticket price will be helping to pay the $130M that he will be getting starting next year. Carpenter and Goldschmidt fooled MO and the FO, and the fans have to pay for it.

Good News vs Bad News: Good = No Carpenter. Bad = McCarver in booth.

Just like with the Reds we need to win 3 out of 4 against the Giants. The Cubs surprisingly lost 2 out of 3 over the weekend but I would expect them to win the next 2. The Mariners are one of the worst teams in baseball.

One would think that Goldy and Carp will bounce back somewhat in 2020. They’re both good players with long track records of success that indicate that they should. Goldy especially is too young to go from elite to average. I’d expect Goldy to be around a 130-140 wRC+ next year and Carp around 120.

That doesn’t help us much this year, exactly… Goldy’s 1B defense has been a big bonus at least, and Carp hopefully can play a little better pinch hitting and occasionally in starts.

By the numbers we should win this game tonight. I looked at Goldys and Ozunas numbers the last week.Goldy actually was crusing along around a hit per game though maybe not timely ones. Ozunas bat strangely went quiet and has stayed that way since we started w the Brewers. Not sure about if they’re making that much contact. If they are they aren’t fallin where we need them. Watched em some Sunday on gameday and they were swinging at pitches in the zone. So anyway some scoring would make things so much easier than having to depend so much on pitching. I am also very glad Barry Bonds is gone.

Prior to today’s series opener with the Giants, infielder Edmundo Sosa was recalled from Memphis (AAA) to become the 34th active player on the Cardinals roster. Sosa, who made his Major League debut last season vs. San Francisco (Sept. 23 at Busch Stadium) previously appeared in three games for St. Louis this July.

The PCL as a whole may be tough on pitchers but Iowa specifically is not.

Maybe not but it’s not like other pitchers haven’t had bad games. Going into yesterday, Woodford was in the top 3 in the PCL in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP. So while he may not be an elite prospect, I stand by my assertion that he would have been a better call up than Mayers, who has pretty much proven he’s not an MLB pitcher at this point.

This is a HUGE four game series with the Giants. We need to win three of these four. The Cubs will no doubt take both games from Seattle but then they have to go to Milwaukee for four games.

We can make some hay this week. Now I am going to make myself a chocolate shake.

You may be right on Carpenter but Goldschmidt has given us more on 1B defense than we have had in years and he had his hot moments too. Player of the month in July should count for something. I don’t like his strikeouts but, check his record and you will see that has always been part of his game. Maybe it’s the 29 homers that I like a lot too but, for me, his overall defense is worth the bucks he gets – My opinion only.

Good start for the offense. Fowler with the opposite field single, Wong a triple into the RF corner and Goldy with the RBI groundout. 2-0 Cards.

Finally, Goldy finds a way to get Wong in from third after a triple! Wong tripled twice against Cincy in the two DHs, and scored zero runs.
