Today is another CCFF! Cardinals Catfish Fiddlers Friday. I bet Pugs won’t miss a chance to get his hands on some Catfish Fiddlers today!

And I was going to watch the Cubs and Doyers from Doyer Stadium but I see it’s one of those stupid AppleTV games and I won’t be able to see it.

One important nugget for this season is our players are getting on base a lot despite losing several key guys.

Last season, we had 4 qualify as top 100 players at getting on base (350 at bat minimum)but only 2 in the top 60. This season, we have 5 in the top 60. And that’s without having Brendan Donovan (was 47), Wilson Contreras (was 66), and one other top 150 guy in Lars Nootbaar (was 118).

Ivan (was 14th, now 21st) and Alec (was 71st, now 51st) are our two returning leaders. They are joined by JJ (42nd), Jordan (54th), and Masyn (58th).

JJ is doing a great job so far of setting the table alongside Ivan. That is why those 2 are top of the lineup.

On the flip side, if I lower the plate appearances threshold to 60 for this season to get Victor Scott included, he falls in at 230 out of 251. Ugh.

J do you have a quick way to look up BA with RISP? It would be interesting to see who is doing what when it matters most.

Yesterday, not having anything else to do, I tuned in to a few innings of the Cubs game and discovered how calmly and reasonably announcers can call a game. Frankly, I don’t even know their names, but these guys apparently don’t feel the need to fill every available milli-second of air time, as ours do, frequently with nonsensical blather or trying to guess what the next pitch will be. It was quite nice to have occasional moments of empty time to watch the game and think my own thoughts, as uninteresting as that might be. And yes, before you say it, I’m aware the volume button can accomplish similar results.

    CIF,
The Cub announcers are pretty good. Jim DeShaies and Boog Sciambi. But it’s the Giants announcing duo that’s the best in the game. That would be Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow.

The Reds have the absolute worst in Sadak and Larkin. And Brantley.

I am not sure thinking is that popular anymore. The nacho munching selfie stick generation is used to being fed steady input all day. They would think the TV is cutting out.

I think the selfie stick fad has passed, but who doesn’t like nachos?

I imagine them thinking homers should be scheduled so they can flip over to something else in between.

Am working a part-time job this summer at Rockies games, so not seeing as many of our games as usual and not able to comment here as often either. Okay, the cheering can stop now. 😀

I do ticket scanning, bag checking and ushering. The Rockies draw a lot of younger fans and they are great for the most part. As an usher I do take a few photos for people with the stadium backdrop. But I love seeing the younger folks in the ballpark and my sense is baseball is still thriving despite its reputation and dull and boring.

I will say one thing that is “curmudgeonly”, and that is that the constant video stuff urging fans to get loud, or clap, or do whatever is lame. The old “charge” things stadiums used to do, or the organ player doing things to rev up fans was fine, but it has revolved to be over the top with the modern technology available.

Still though, the game is great and I am glad the younger folks are coming out.

Life is better when televised nightly baseball is on.

Bring back “The Wave”……not! Even at the height of it’s popularity, I never once participated. I told my second wife at the time to shoot me without hesitation if I were to ever shoot up from my seat with a glowing smile on my mug to get in on “The Wave” action.

Indeed Rat, catfish fiddlers it shall be later on. I wish more of our posters would join Rat, Bling(when he can get them) and myself to gobble up a delicious plate or two of the fiddlers on Fridays during the season. Like they say “baseball, apple pie, Chevrolet and catfish fiddlers represent the core….the core of the nest egg if you will, of what this country is all about”.

Hate to say it, but let’s call this one 8-3 Mariners, with our old pal Randy Arozarena throttling a long tater way up into the left field rafters.

I’m not at all crazy about the video stuff that is constantly projected on these fancy modern day scoreboards but what’s really torturous is the audio portion that seemingly pours from the loudspeaker system at the decibel level not at all unlike an F-15 at wide open full afterburner. To say that the entire fiasco would give a woodpecker a headache would be a vast understatement.

Sure! The sample size is pretty small but here’s top and bottom 3 with at least 10 plate appearances with RiSP:

    Burleson: .333
    Gorman: .280
3-Way tie at .250 for Herrera, Wetherholt, Church

    Urias: .000
    Scott: .167
    Winn: .167

Despite their poor record, the Mariners pose a threat because of their pitching. These next 7 games will be very tough. I thought the Marlins would be tough too.

OK here’s what’s on the menu Rat. Tired from a week’s work, I elected to go the carry out route. Poor Richard’s is right up the street, so I called in their world famous chicken wing special. Caesar salad, 12 wings with hot sauce and blue cheese dressing on the side with garlic bread. To be washed down with Arnie Palmer half and half diet tea and lemonade. Than on the way back i couldn’t prevent my car from pulling in Walgreens where I procured a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked. Although that company leans way to far left for my taste, my taste had no standards when it comes to desserts. In the 5th inning I shall remove the lid and throw it in the trash on my way back to my chair where I will watch the rest of the game while I polish off the pint. Most likely I will also fall asleep full and hopefully happy with a Cardinal victoy.

I would have guessed Walker would be substantially under .200 with RISP, Bling. His last 6 HR’s have been of the solo variety and the vast majority of the names he’s been hitting in front of are spelled, Scott, Church, Saggese and Gorman, so teams have been working to him carefully. Although, according to Jnevel’s comment, Gorman has done a decent job at making the opposition pay for doing so, as attested to by the .280 with RISP that Nolan’s hung up on the board.

Playing Church in CF tonight. Oli must have thought Scott needed an extra day of rest and reflection.

My unfortunate prediction for this one is close to Pugs as I see a 7-1 Mariners “W”.

Wonder if our buddy Donovan, the ball player not the singer, will make an appearance to perhaps bring out the lineup card or something so the fans can show their appreciation.

Scott is a guy I thought would keep getting better and develop a little power – say 10 to 15 long balls plus a decent OBP of around .350. Seems he has regressed to where he looks more like the guy when he first came up than the guy early last year.
