Monday’s paid attendance was 17.9k and from the looks whenever the camera took in the stands the actual was far short of that.

These next two games with McGreevy and May are our best chance. They both need to go beyond 4 or 5 innings.

By WRC+, we have just 3 above average hitters and only 2 of them are regulars (Walker of course and Burleson). Urias is the other. Winn is 10% below league average and then it only goes down from there. Victor Scott at 46% below average and Church at 80% below round out the bottom of the regular players (although Church hasn’t really been a regular lately). Those two are unsustainable despite their elite defense.

Well its up to personal view but i would rather have great defense and below avg hitting than the other way around. At least you look the part of a baseball team on the field. I would never pay money to watch guys who cant throw or field.Guys like that shouldnt even be in the league, thats what independent ball is for and i wont watch those guys too often even for cheap

Respectfully, I feel the exact opposite as Willie. If you don’t score you don’t win….

Winn, VS and Church would be great, if they had the ability to hit a baseball.

I’m okay with one maybe 2 guy between C, SS, CF who are below average hitters in 75-95 wRC+ range. They need to be really good like Winn is to be at the lower end of that spectrum.

Winn to me hits enough. Small sample size this year and he will likely settle between 90-100 wRC+ on the season which with his glove is a valuable player.

Pages just doesn’t cut it. Average at best to me defensively. Scott has to hit more but unfortunately there isn’t anyone who can replace him at the moment. He does need some more runway out there but I just haven’t seen anything from him offensively that suggest he will be even remotely close to average at the plate.

Crooks is hitting a bit in AAA. I don’t understand why they don’t give him a run. Pages is a JAG. If Crooks fails, so be it, but he should get a shot.

Crooks needs more time. His performance on the surface is good with his BA, OBP, SLG. But his underlying data shows he needs more time. He has a horrible K% because he chases pitches out of the zone at a high rate and he simply swings and misses at a high rate. Be likely wouldn’t far swell at the MLB level right now as he needs to get better discipline and bat control.

I’m good with Wetherholt, Winn, and Burleson and anything even remotely close to resembling the current Walker. I guess I’m good with Herrera, but I don’t love committing to him being full-time DH. That’s 5 of 9 though. The other roles are all question marks.

Scott (or Church) could be the answer in CF, but as ATM notes, they need to get to around 20% below league average to justify playing every day. I don’t know if they can get there or not, but I’m happy to keep working with them this season. There are no internal possibilities on the horizon unless we shove Baez there and pay the defensive price.

That leaves 3B, LF, and either catcher or DH. The pipeline has plenty of catching so that ship should right itself and DH can either be Herrera or maybe some of Blaze Jordan at some point. Or it can be a revolving position, which is more ideal.

In a perfect world, the Cardinals trade Nootbaar after he comes back strong AND Josh Baez comes in and plays well to take the role of LF.

3B is the one without any clear direction. The team should continue to focus on helping Gormsn. As a backup, I know Jordan is taking reps there at AAA as an option. Not sure he can cut it defensively or offensively, but he’s off to a good start on both this season. Saggese is also a possibility, but his best position is 2B so now I see him more as a utility.

Three straight blowouts and after a nice start we are looking like a true rebuilding club.

Meanwhile Pittsburgh is going the other way. They have an excellent starting rotation and this year have some guys who can hit. If Griffin is the real deal we may be looking at a latter day “lumber company”. Skenes might not lose a game the rest of the season.

The change is Saggese over Fermin.

Our pitching needs sharp imrovement. I honestly thought our starting pitching might be pretty good

People thought that removing Fedde and Mikolas would suddenly fix the lack of bat missing ability in the rotation. It’ll remain an issue until or unless we get lucky and Mathews figures out his control or Franklin or Cijntje or Doyle come along.

Completely agree 25. I didn’t expect the rotation to be good and expect a lot of pitching turnover this year. The team really needs to get some higher potential guys with swing and miss stuff.

Love our odds of victory when McGreevy is toeing the rubber. We’ll win this game tonight. The only question I have is by how many runs? Let’s call it 6-3 Cards with Burly muscling up with a long 2 run tater.

And what’s for din-din one may inquire? Soon I’ll be making 2 Oscar Meyer double bologna with Kraft cheese slices sandwiches. One with yellow mustard and the other with mayo. Also stepping up to the plate will be a handful of homemade deviled eggs and baked beans drenched in apple cider vinegar. And it’ll be Breyer’s vanilla bean ice cream with banana slices and mucho Hershey’s chocolate syrup for dessert. I may even have a bit of Jiff peanut butter on the side to accompany a few bites.

I haven’t procured one of those trusty pocket sized folding Cardinal schedules from the gas station yet this season, so I was wondering if the full ’26 schedule was similar to last season’s in regards to if almost as many games are played against AL teams as are played against NL teams. I don’t guess it’s too important simply because the practical reality is that two seperate leagues no longer exist except for the purpose of having WS foes.

    Pugs?

Din-din today for me was a trip up to the Odon Tavern to get a couple of their renowned fish sandwiches. I had one for lunch and will have one later tonight for my late supper about the time of 1st pitch from Doyer Stadium.

And yes, Whitey Herdog will be on the couch and coaxing a bite or two from me. And tonight I will probably have three 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigars.

I am calling this one 7-3 Redbirds tonight with JJ Weatherman getting off the schneid with a big done to RF.

Its all right cardsfaninchitown, everyone has their own ideas on it. I just know that tbe best cardinal teams always had solid defense and pretty good pitching. Not always great but it worked largely because of their defense. Now true hitting is important but i think more important to have good coaching that emphasises fundamentals and situational hitting. Wanting hitters over defense and solid pitching is like wanting fools gold instead of real gold. Even the best hitters are below average when you look at percentages and thats guys like pujols. They are still only successful a third of the time at best. Good players are even far less so successful. So ill always tske the defense which hardly ever goes away.

You lucky dog, Blingster. So exciting when the wifey hits the road for a few days. The perfect marriage just may be when the wifey is home for 4 days a week and then hits the road for the other 3.

Hey Rat, be careful. I’ve never known you to smoke 3 Via Grande Palma’s in one evening. And a basic but sweet din-din for TD on this fine Tuesday evening.

The day is fast approaching where Victor Scott and Gorman need to stop being such offensive liabilities or they leave the organization no choice. I’d give Gorman to the all-star break and Victor until just past the dog days of August.

Not too many hitters at all have been successful a third of the time swinging the bat. Certainly not the great Albert Pujols. Even legendary Cardinal Stan Musial came up a bit short with a career .3308 BA. In fact, by my count, only 24 hitters since 1900 have placed a career BA of .3331 or above into the books. The two most recent of those 24 being Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams. It ain’t easy to make solid contact when facing Big League pitching.

Well that is true 1tough but stan was pretty close and pujols particularly during his card years wasnt too far off. Regardless even a third is a pretty low average. For comparison you get 33 percent of the questions on a math test right, you still fail.

Yeah, that really places things into perspective, Willie. And among current players, Arraez leads all others at .3167. Him and Altuve are the only two guys above .300 with Freddie Freeman placing at third with a .2994 mark. I’d have to guess that climate change has led to an inferior quality of lumber…Haha!
