When I was thinking of Chipper Jones on the MVP question, I was also thinking it might have been one of the Astros stars. Based on that hint, was it Berkman?

The correct answer to the trivia concerning who placed 3rd in the voting for the 2006 NL MVP award happens to be none other than “Phat Elvis.” That’s right folks, our old friend Berky! In 2006 Lance put .315/45/136 up on the board. He was the primary catalyst for that Astro team that enabled Houston to make a hard late season charge in the last week of Aug. and thru the entire month of Sept. to come to within a hair of catching the Redbirds to steal the NLC crown in ’06. In my humble view Lance Berkman should have placed second behind Albert for the ’06 NL MVP, with Ryan Howard placing a distant third to the aforementioned two former Redbirds. Berky will also go down in Cardinal baseball lore as being the player who had what I feel was the second most important hit in the 2011 WS. Berky could flat out rip a baseball and even though he was a Redbird for only a short period of time, he’ll always be one of my favorite Cardinal players.

When I think “Richie” in baseball, two players come to mind. Richie Hebner and Richie Asburn(whom was before my time). Hey Carter!

Nice going, Euro! Yeah, anytime we play the Astros, Berky always enters my mind for two reasons. The first reason is that he always frightened me to death every time he stood in the box with a bat in his hand while wearing an Astros uniform, and the second is that he turned out to be one of my all time favorite Cardinal players. Prior to becoming a Redbird he always frightened me way more than Beltran, Bagwell, Biggio, Kent, or any other player who wore one of those silly looking Astro uniforms. Berky was no joke.
These Astros have been pretty darn awesome for quite a few years. This year I do not fear them……I think we’ll take them.

Balls hit up the middle used to almost always find their way to center field……but not in this era. They’re shading over that way much more than they used to, but could part of the reason be infielders are covering more ground?
