They will all fail at one time or another. It is all in how they deal with it. Some are better equipped than others to handle it properly. As TLR was fond of saying, “They are men, not machines.”
January 22, 2025 at 12:06 pm #275255As Red would say “they’ll sort themselves out”.
January 22, 2025 at 12:24 pm #275256Is Kyle Reis a 0-3 player? His surplus value sounds good to me. Your podcast is like a talent magnet Brian😀
January 22, 2025 at 1:08 pm #275258Re: Fernandez as closer scenario
Too keep Ryan all 6 seasons, his arb affordability almost requires a low budget budget approach of minimal saves, the 0-3 seasons. Helsleys timeline is a decent comparable, but his saves are backloaded during his arb control. Earlier and higher save totals would have had a compounding effect on his raises, and would have resulted in higher salaries than current.
Fernandez with saves early could result in him being traded away his season six. Managed, his comparable salaries could still exceed Helsleys, but still retain his walk year. TBD.
January 23, 2025 at 8:12 pm #275285Great to see Kyle become the full time co-host. He seems knowledgeable and brings great energy to the episodes.
Great content as well this week and discussion on the SP “depth” and lack of a spot for the young guys. At some point, we just have to pencil a spot in for one of the young guys and let them run with it. If we don’t, then we will never be sure we can count on one and just keep signing older SPs to deals that financially burden the team.
I haven’t caught up with all the interviews, but that is an interesting quote from Burleson about not expecting much time in the OF as I think he has no business being out there.
One thing I am curious Brian is if you recall as much excitement from the players about a new hitting coach from previous Winter Warmup years with Ward coming in or Jeff Albert before him? I agree the interviews I have listened to make it sound like Brown is having a significant impact so far and I really loved hearing Jordan Walker’s interview about the progress him and Brown have been making.

Yes, that unusually high enthusiasm over Brown is something that Kyle and I both noted. Perhaps I am a bit of a cynic, but my reaction is that they are still on their honeymoon period.
January 29, 2025 at 6:41 am #275504This week @kyler416 and I cover the signing of Yohel Pozo (who?), Mathews vs. Hence, move of Carlson to Bal, players-turned-managers Pujols and Molina (with a side of Big Mac) and early impressions of #STLCards development camp, now underway in Jupiter. https://t.co/P3P9pShkoa pic.twitter.com/k5rKv6R8ry

ParticipantAlways enjoy these, Brian. Thanks for doing them.
January 29, 2025 at 11:41 am #275524Somehow I missed last week’s podcast. I’m catching up on both today, so that’s a nice surprise. Enjoying these Reis’s pieces so far!
February 5, 2025 at 7:49 am #275935This week, @kyler416 and I cover the Edmonds news and fallout, the optimal time to set the roster for the new season and impressions of #STLCards' placement on national farm system ranking lists, with specific prospect commentary. https://t.co/IvLKjoRJ2F pic.twitter.com/yyDIHfQ1VW

February 5, 2025 at 10:04 am #275941I like this color commentator Kyle that we’re now blessed with weekly. He’s fun and entertaining to listen to while still being knowledgeable of the Cardinals system. He also shares his opinions and generally, they have a lot of merit. Perhaps we should put Kyle in the broadcast booth in Edmonds place . . . as long as he doesn’t become the After Dark version during night games. That Kyle would probably be out of a job in a hurry. One thing is sure though, I’d rather listen to Kyle than Jim most any day.
February 5, 2025 at 11:49 am #275943Kyle seems like a guy you’d talk too while in the concessions line, and you walk away thinking, “yep, he keeps track too”. Same affliction 😜, with genuine takes. Lucky us, the Cardinal Nation.
February 5, 2025 at 8:53 pm #275953Great discussion this week and it is really nice to have such good info coming from Jupiter. Edmonds comments made it sound like things are up tight and too corporate. I’m curious if you can see that in the players at camp so far or if it seems more relaxed and the players are enjoying themselves. I personally think the existing Cardinals Way was more uptight and didn’t let players express themselves. But I could see the youth infusion from the coaches and players actually changing that and making camp a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the players.
February 6, 2025 at 7:14 pm #276017Kyle sends his thanks for your comments.
Big league camp hasn’t begun so I can’t sense the vibe yet. Minor league camp has been about the sheer number of new coaches and instructors starting to integrate. I will note they have background music playing for the first time while the players work out.
February 12, 2025 at 7:28 am #276291In this week's podcast, @kyler416 and I cover top subjects, starting with #stlcards spring training, a very aggressive today-only promotion for midweek tickets at Busch Stadium, and a discussion of the various veteran minor league players added recently. https://t.co/SBATpDaXHb pic.twitter.com/3A4CSiMwWs

*Mikolas is preparing like his next contract depends on it
*Leahy stretched out for long relief tests his outstanding production from last season, if he makes the pen.

Hat-tip.February 26, 2025 at 8:02 am #277152A lot to cover with @kyler416. February 26, 2025 at 10:02 pm #277201Fantastic episode this week. I have only been able to watch part of one game so it was really nice to hear the details on the players and how they are looking. I’m tempted to go watch recording of the game Roby pitched since it’s sounds like he looked good. The changes to improving communication throughout the org sound very promising. With so much change on the development side, it will be fun to watch which players break out this year.

ParticipantNice to hear Kyle go into some technical detail on specific pitches.
February 27, 2025 at 9:14 am #277225I am trying to be less married to a set runtime each week to allow for more in depth discussion when it seems valuable. But I also don’t want the podcasts to become rambling.
February 27, 2025 at 11:49 am #277231I personally like 15 minutes as a soft rule. That’s easy to digest. But if the discussion is a good one – which most of the time it is between you and Kyle – then I’m ok with added time.
I think the 2 of you guys play off each other well. It just seems to work. That adds to the entertainment value and makes this a really good piece to listen to.
February 27, 2025 at 5:23 pm #277232bccran
ParticipantWWW, with Blake as the guest, ran 20 minutes plus or minus on average. Going to 25 minutes if both Brian and Blake were on a roll. That might be a pretty good guideline with Kyle as the guest now. Specifics about various players, especially what they’re working on this Spring, is extremely valuable.
February 27, 2025 at 5:50 pm #277233If it is a great conversation like this week, I don’t mind it going up to 30 minutes in length. Once it gets much past that it gets harder to find time to listen in.
February 27, 2025 at 8:14 pm #277234This time of year, I like the longer format. There are no games yet, the NFL is over already, not an Olympic year and prior to March Madness or the NBA or NHL playoffs…this is the most interesting thing going. Especially this year with Brian providing so much on the spot reporting.
Week to week during the season, 15-20 mins may work better. For now, I like 30ish.
