I would go 3-4-9 on those.
Not relevant to today, but kind of interesting nonetheless, back in the day Bing Devine would run potential deals by Johnny Keane. The most noteworthy one is the story where the Cardinals were perusing Lou Brock, and finally the Cubs agreed on what became the final transaction.
The Cardinals were boarding the plane at the time, heading to Houston for a series. Bing got on board and Keane was already seated, and Bing told him “We can get Brock” and outlined the deal. Johnny Keane looked at him and said, “What are we waiting for?”
That was pre cell phone of course, and once the plane landed in Houston Devine got on the phone and completed the deal. I believe Brock made his Cardinal debut in that Houston series as a pinch hitter, and struck out.
So much for that deal!! 🙂
