I thought it might be nice to have a thread to discuss activity going on around MLB this winter BESIDES the CBA. We already have a separate thread to discuss the CBA. We could use this thread to discuss actual baseball moves, especially those within our division and league.

The Reds are giving every indication that they are cutting payroll.

We already have specific threads for each of the NL Central teams so let’s make this for news from the rest of MLB.

Your own trade ideas and free agent signing ideas has its own separate discussion topic pinned to the top of the board.

When the Cardinals are linked to a specific player (free agent or trade target) via a credible news source, that will be worthy of its own thread.

Good idea Brian. I will use the NLC threads for those transactions.

No QO for Kershaw…that’s a little surprising. I know it would be a longshot for the Cards to sign him, but I’d not be sad if they were able to sign him to a 2-3 year deal.

Reminder that the Cardinals signing a declined qualifying offer free agent means a loss of the second-best draft pick plus a $500K loss in international spending. We won’t know until 11/17 which of these accept and decline, but most will pick free agency.

Something tells me Kershaw is a little more hurt with that flexor tendon than the Dodgers are letting on. They also cut loose Joe Kelly for similar reasons. They are hedging their bets with Kershaw. I’d steer way clear of him as he was shut down twice this past season and may well be a candidate to miss all of 2022 when all is said and done.

That is a good point about the loss of draft picks and international money. With the Cardinals doubling down on analytics and the build from within model I just can’t see them wanting to do that so I think we can probably scratch those names off our list for the winter. Of course we still don’t know what the rules will be under the new CBA.

As for Kershaw, I might be interested in him on a one or two year deal if his health checks out. Chances are he goes back to the Dodgers or signs with his hometown Rangers.

One of these guys might be of interest to the Cardinals in a trade.

Yeah, I wonder if they’d be interested in someone like Sosa? Dejong probably fits their model as a bounce back candidate, but his contract may not be palatable for them if they’re wanting to cut payroll.

If we got an upper down to mid-rotation starter as the A’s are dangling for a package of Sosa, Noot, and Woodford, it would have seemed amazing two years ago. With some of the injury histories involved with those arms, it has really changed the optics of such a deal.

What do the Marlins need beyond pitching? I would say first and catcher. They have some huge outfield bats arriving soon.
Who has the most value in our system in a deal for Sandy Alcantra?
Would Hererra, Baker,Woodford, and Oviedo get anywhere?

I was thinking the same thing. They definitely need a SS and Sosa would fit their payroll better than DeJong but we would probably have to throw someone else in to get one of their pitchers.

Here’s a thought to ponder… IF the Cardinals were to consider trading PDJ, Colorado would make sense since they are looking for a shortstop for a year or two until their hot prospect Tovar will be ready. What could we expect in return for him and who do they have that we might want?

Interesting question. I think DeJong would be a good fit in Colorado. He doesn’t have a lot of value at the moment but he does have some due to his power and defense. I think a good match would be Kyle Freeland. He is a LH starter who can eat some innings and be a serviceable number 4 starter with two years of control. I would view him as good as Steven Matz if not better.

The big question is would the Rockies do another trade with the Cardinals right now after the Arenado deal. I kind of doubt it.

Tigers pick up a starting pitcher. We will see if there’s a flurry of signings prior to Dec 1.

That’s a pretty impressive deal. Berrios is a decent pitcher, in the Carlos Martinez (prior to injuries) class of starter. I think this signals that the market could be pretty robust. Will the Cards try to extend anyone this off-season? O’Neill or Flaherty, maybe? (I am aware that Jack likely would not take any deal that’s not a big overpay)

Well I hope they don’t actually. I am hoping we have learned our lesson on internal extensions and just play it year to year.
