so who should they sign? Reading the posts here all free agents are too expensive or not good enough. No worries they won’t sign Hosmer. They will never take a chance like that not when getting the wildcard is your goal. Hosmer is not mediocre. He is a good player but to each his own.
I am not necessarily advocating signing either Hosmer or Moustakas. That would depend on the price tag and years dropping way down. But I do get tired of the empty rhetoric sometimes. Show me facts – or at least some analysis based on more than opinion.
In the meantime, I will show you some.
Mediocre = average

Having said that, if you want to argue that the two might not be significant upgrades over the corner infielders already on the team, you could make a case. IMO, Hosmer would be a clear improvement over Gyorko, but the cost may be steep. Any view of Moustakas would also depend on your confidence level in Gyorko as a 600-plate appearance player. Would Jedd’s results hold up? (I focus on Gyorko as the guy to be replaced because we know Carpenter is going to play.)
Looking at how this team is currently constructed, I might put my money on pitching help instead of offense. Especially given that Martinez’ presence already provides an opportunity to rest Carpenter and Gyorko regularly.
Hosmer is at 3.5, -0.1 and 4.1 fWAR the last three years.
Moustakas is at 3.7, 0.7, 2.2.
Mediocrity is within the range of outcomes, but not the most likely. Seems like Hosmer is approximately Carpenter and Moustakas is similar to Gyorko. Either would be an upgrade but would it be worth the money? Such is the question.
I like Hosmer. He sure is a good player. I’d love to see him at first base. But not as much as I’d hate seeing Carpenter at third base. And if they sign Hosmer, that’s where Carpenter will be playing. Also, I think its unrealistic to think that they would, or could, trade Carpenter. I could be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening. I’ve never read anything that said that Carpenter is in any trade discussion.
BTW, most of the other teams are acting like all the free agents are too expensive or not good enough, also.
I agree, 25. (FWIW, the original point on mediocrity was about who they supposedly are, not a prediction of what they might be. )
Good point on Carp having to play third, mud. No, Carpenter isn’t going to be traded (nor is Fowler). 😉
Don’t the Cardinals generally have an aversion to signing FAs who received qualifying offers? That 2017 draft really hurt and they may not want lose any draft choices in 2018. Hosmer, Moustakas, and Holland all recieved QOs.
The fact that Hosmer is 28 and Carp 32 is one of the reasons I would like to get Hosmer. I think having two young bats in the middle of the order would be good. I understand the money concern but at one point or another this team will need to take risk and invest. I am tired of the Fowler and Leake type signing. Hosmer seems a good investment because of his age. I think Carp will keep breaking down. Which player out there that is above average will they get?
Another good point, bccran. They also have said they prefer to spend money over losing young prospects, though. In these cases, the cost would include some of both.
P.S. One thing to remember is that they do have an extra pick for Lynn.
Well most of the good free agents will receive a QO so I guess we will not be signing any free agents.
You exaggerate, NJ. There were only nine qualifying offers made across all of MLB this year. Seven remain free agents, including the three bccran mentioned plus Lynn, Arrieta, Cain and Cobb. There are others still on the market who could also help teams, including the Cardinals.
What I meant was the better free agents will receive one. Lynn and Cobb are not top free agents Cain? maybe only Arrieta.
Within the boundary of average is pretty much by definition mediocre.
An average of 115 or so ops+ for hosmer (by far the better of the two) is still within the bounds of average. He is “slightly above average” and still…
Mediocre. And pretty much average.
He’s a decent player. That’s it. You pay for decent players you get a decent team.
Decent teams are a dime a dozen.

Hosmer is pretty much the definition of a Fowler and leake type signing. 2-4 WAR guys for tons of money better spent elsewhere.
The upgrade that we need for offense is at third base. The trouble is that the Jays want to win and are not going to trade Donaldson, and Machado is not a fit because he want so play SS, and because he’s a rental with a high price tag. There just isn’t anybody else out there that we might be able to get for third base. Moustakas isn’t really much of an upgrade over Gyorko, and not worth the cost, IMO. The next big move that I think everyone is holding their breath for is Archer, and maybe Colome. At least there’s a little smoke on the horizon around that, even though I think that MO believes they can do well enough with the starting pitching they have. And if Wainwright is healthy, he’s probably right.

Any update on Gregerson? He’s appeared in 2 games (2 innings) for Palm Beach giving up just one hit and nothing else.
Bader stays up….i guess the last couple of games Garcia was getting that extra run at SS for a reason…
pen is looking better each outing IMO…if they round into form we just might be able to ride it through the summer

Luke has appeared to look spent the last couple of years. Committing $11M to him in the offseason seemed strange at the time, naming him the closer at the beginning of spring training seemed very strange at the time, and he has really done nothing to inspire confidence since then. Enough said.
I suppose Ozuna could deserve a thread but he seems to be getting warmer if he could just elevate the ball instead of pounding grounders.
Not furious, gscottar. But it just makes for better discussion to put the Gregerson comments on his existing thread. Now that I see all of the other threads, I will not merge them like I did this one. Have your fun.
My take on your post is that the Cards did not want to pay market price for free agent closers so grabbed a pseudo-closer early in Gregerson. Norris came along late with low expectations and Holland fell into their lap even later. My guess is that they would have passed on Gregerson altogether had they been able to see the future. Now they have him, they have to hope he figures it out.
