Four years ago as a starter, he sat 89-92 with his heater. Two years ago he was hitting 98 consistently with some command out of the pen.Here is the team’s notification. Usually the cash amounts do not get disclosed. But they at least got something for him vs. just losing him on waivers.
We have traded outfielder Adolis García to the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.

Interesting points about Morales, NigelT. He is mostly a forgotten man at this point. It would be a real bonus if he can contribute.
The Texas Rangers website said that the Cardinals also received a RH AAA reliever Jimmy Herget, 26 year old.
However, if Garcia is as good as many think, he would surely be snapped up off waivers
We’re lucky to get $50K and a used puck bag for him. He might get a chance to hit 25 homers some day if whatever team he’s on is ravaged by injuries but he might K 200 times and never get on base. Were past the days of free swingers who can’t get on base like Grichuk and O’Neill. He wasn’t even as good as them.
It will be fun to compare this deal to Kim’s over time… Keuchel is about eight months older.

He and Harrison were in the same class. Harrison learned (but then soon forgot). Tyler never learned.
I’m late to the party…. but I’d completely forgotten about Morales.
The Memphis rotation, bullpen and OF are going to be stacked next year.
Often 2 for 1, 3 for 1, 4 for 2, etc deals end up looking like losers for the team giving up more players, but aren’t the Cardinals in a position where they almost have to do those kind of deals? It sounds much better than Dewitt getting his “cash considerations”.
If they would have packaged Garcia with a pitcher, couldn’t they have gotten a lottery ticket prospect at least?
The people that continue to dismiss O`Neill like he was yesterdays trash make me laugh.When he has gotten chances to play he has produced and he is still ony 24 years old.Be a complete foolish line of thinking just to write him off at this stage.I know he not flavor of the month like RA or the departed Adolis Garc ia but IMO he is better than either one of them.
Personally, I am not writing off anyone, but I expect them to perform. This will be O’Neill’s third spring with the team. In 2018, he was hurt twice in camp. In 2019, he hit five home runs, but batted just .230 and struck out at a 29 percent rate. And he still made the team. However, I expect the OF battle will be tougher this year. Camp is going to be really competitive, and I see that as a good thing. The players will tell us who belongs. They will either write themselves off or step up.
Well, the discussion was about prospects, so I will change my choice of word from “player” to “prospect” to make that clear.
But since you want to grouse about Fowler, let’s look into some facts.
Fowler was not the problem with the 2019 Cardinals. His OPS+ was higher than four other starters: DeJong, Carpenter, Molina and Bader, plus reserves Martinez, Wieters, Munoz, O’Neill, etc… The only starters who had a higher OPS+ were Goldschmidt, Ozuna and Wong.
But if Fowler reverts back to the 2018 edition, he will eventually sit. No one knows how much time it would take, but for some who have already made up their minds, one 0-for game would be enough.
P.S. We can probably agree that it would be great if someone steps up and plays well enough to displace Fowler. However, the current situation is that one job (LF) is already open and there could be two if (CF) Bader continues to struggle with the bat. Fowler (RF) would be the third priority to address in that scenario.

Trust me I’ve watched both here in Memphis, Garcia can’t handle one either. He strikes out way way to much and it’s always on a Triple A breaking ball. O’Neill did fairly well when Ozuna went down. He’s a better fielder, has an equal if not better arm, better power and can run circles around Garcia.
Garcia was a nice guy, so is O’Neill but Bye Bye Adolis, good luck. go to Japan.

Bw is correct some guys figure it out at some point. My question is… are we dismissing Thomas? I like what I saw of him.
I can’t speak for the board, but I am certainly not dismissing Thomas. In fact, in our upcoming prospect ranking article on Randy Arozarena, I will explain why I think Thomas has a better career ahead. If Bader doesn’t hit this spring and Thomas does, I could even see a change in center. Of course, Randy should be right in that same contest.

WoodfordI guess this depends on your MLB rotation and bullpen, but I have Helsley and Ponce already in that. If they choose to go with the 8-man pen, you’d have Cecil, Miller, Gallegos, Webb, Brebbia, and Gant, the loser of the rotation battle between Kim and Martinez, and the 8th guy would be one of these two. Then there will be spring training injuries. I know you are projecting Junior Fernandez in the ML bullpen, but I can’t see them choosing him over Helsley or Ponce to start the year. They were even pitching out of the ML pen in the postseason.
From your list and after Woodford, I wouldn’t put any of the rest in the AAA rotation. Oviedo and Rondon should probably stay at AA. The rest aren’t players that would stop me from signing AAAA depth. Warner, Ellis, Parsons, Shew, and Kruczynski all had ERAs over 5 and don’t show a lot of signs of upside, especially factoring in age. FaGalde is 26 too and I didn’t know Herget was still on the team. The Memphis bullpen looks lackluster as well, unless Fernandez is there. Additionally, the signed players could always start in AA too. In 2016, McGuire, Brebbia, and Sulbaran spent time in AA.
Either way, Kim was a nice addition to the team. The quoted pitchers above, however elite in skill or potential they may be, represent the entirety of our potential minor league pitching depth going into 2020. It’s a somewhat scary thought for Memphis baseball if they are called upon en masse to the majors.

No, I have written that I think Junior will be back with Memphis to open the season. Too many proven options ahead of him, but I do think he will be back up soon.
The Memphis bullpen looks lackluster as well, unless Fernandez is there.
A number of our top 50 prospects should be in that pen. I thought it looks pretty strong. Who don’t you like?
Oviedo and Rondon should probably stay at AA.
Well, I might see Oviedo, but he has already made 23 starts for Springfield. If he goes back there, it should not be for very long. Rondon won the Texas League ERA title and is arguably the best starting prospect in the system other than Thompson. What more does Rondon need to prove at Double-A? He is not a guy to artificially hold back, IMO.
Just so we don’t lose the main point here. I believe there are already too many starters for the available jobs, so I would be against your idea of signing more “AAAA” starters. That is why I engaged you in this discussion, but I wanted to also provide detail to back up my point of view. I appreciate that you did the same.
P.S. I forgot to add that I expect St. Louis to add another veteran reliever before spring training. That would take away one more job from the already tight pitching roster spot equation.
