Dumb to DFA Garcia when you got utter GARBAGE Cecil still on this team!
December 19, 2019 at 9:18 am #117152There are 7.25 million reasons to bring Cecil to spring training. I am not sure what the reasons are for Urias though.
December 19, 2019 at 9:31 am #117153I really don’t understand the Garcia move. Even if you want to move on from him, make a trade. Someone must be willing to take him for something in return.
His HR outburst last year should at least give him another shot to up his average a bit.
We seem to give unlimited chances to some players and so few to others.

stlcard25ParticipantGarcia has been around long enough that we know what we have. Sure, he might hit 20 HRs if he had an entire season’s worth of at bats, but if he’s got a .210 average and .250 OBP, is that valuable? I don’t see this as any great loss. I wish him well, but the Cards are better off keeping the 3rd string SS/2B than the 7th string OFer.

ParticipantIs the AGarcia move a precursor to obtaining that left handed batting MLB OFer with proven pop in his bat? Key word: proven. Just thinking out loud.
As far as the Cecil argument goes… what are the chances he returns to his better years? The FO is betting on some key ($$$) acquisitions to bounce back to where their contracts say they should be. This is Plan A. Improving the team by playing their best guys is Plan B.
IMO keeping this many signing-misses around just makes the ineptitude of the FO more evident. They don’t have enough fingers to cross for all of their miscues.
December 19, 2019 at 10:16 am #117156Memphis Redbirds season ticket holder here. The thought that Garcia is better than Ravello is nuts. Garcia is awful, Ravello is one of the ones I want batting in clutch situations. Garcia can’t deal with breaking pitches, he makes Tyler O’Neill look good. I’ve seen him play for three years now and all I can say is good riddance.

What if the Cards have to keep him rostered for insurance purposes? Even the very rich wouldn’t throw away $15M, or even $7+M, just to prove a point to the armchair GMs.
December 19, 2019 at 10:27 am #117158jager, Garcia could still be traded.
Those critical of the front office are consistent. Any move made or not made is a reason to take shots. Usually there is no explanation or logic because they don’t want to discuss the real merits of the situation. Easier to just complain.
December 19, 2019 at 11:54 am #117159One thing people are forgetting is that Garcia will not be lost unless someone claims him. Since he hasn’t been removed before, he can’t declare himself a free agent. If I am remembering everything correctly.
December 19, 2019 at 11:54 am #117160My only complaint about Garcia is the Cardinals added him to the 40-man roster a year early only for him to ride the bench. I didn’t understand the move and still don’t. He was never given a legitimate shot at the MLB level and has since been passed over by several other guys in the organization. In fact the roster makeup over the past few seasons has been a cause of complaint from many fans with the amount of major league ready outfielders and the logjam of infielders at Memphis and Springfield that is causing guys to play out of position and from being promoted.
December 19, 2019 at 1:11 pm #117164Sheepdawg. Thanks for that rundown on the Garcia/Ravelo comparison. You validate what I think but we need to get Ravelo a 2nd playing position in order to get him some game time and at bats. Goldie won’t be sitting too much.

My chair sir has no arm. Please refer to me by my proper nomenclature – couch potato GM. Thank you.December 19, 2019 at 1:18 pm #117166As far as Cecil goes I can agree with the FO to just wait and see what that long time on the IL has proven. He had some surgery that is supposed to correct his situation whatever it was and they can surely wait until Spring Training to see if they think he will be effective as a lefty bull pen piece. Garcia’s numbers do not really instill a lot of promise.

I get that point, as I have heard it before. It looked way worse back then, but at it played out over time, it did not turn out to matter. Further, it has nothing to do with him being DFAed now. He still has two minor league options remaining so if the team thought he had a better future than others, there was no hurry to remove him. Further, Garcia did not burn an option in 2018, the year he was called up, and if he had, he could have been eligible for a fourth option later, anyway.
So, whether he was added to the 40-man “a year early” in 2018 or in 2019, his last option year would be 2021. Same endpoint either way. (CC and I had this same discussion on the Members Board the other day…)
The only issue I might have with what happened in 2018 looking back is that Garcia used a 40-man spot that could have been given to someone else. However, now with full hindsight, even that did not matter. The only player lost in that Rule 5 was Chris Ellis, who was returned later, anyway, and is a non-prospect to boot.
P.S. In my book, competition is good. Garcia has over 1100 career plate appearances in three years at Memphis but despite the home runs, his overall contribution was declining, and was below league average the last two years. Most importantly, it was less than other outfielders wanting the same MLB job. It is a natural process of sorting out the best of the best.
December 19, 2019 at 1:58 pm #117168forsch, that is correct. If Garcia clears waivers, he would have to report to Memphis. However, if Garcia is as good as many think, he would surely be snapped up off waivers. I am among those who expect that, if a trade is not worked out beforehand.
An overdue welcome to sheepdawg. Keep those Memphis eyewitness accounts coming!
December 19, 2019 at 3:23 pm #117171Brian…yes he COULD still be traded, however now he HAS to be traded within a specific time period. We have lost almost all our potential negotiating with any team by putting it into a specific time frame.
I am critical of the FO and am supportive of them.
If you are going to levy an attack on me then do it directly instead of the passive aggressive follow up which is pretty disrespectful and rude considering my extremely long standing posting habits and support of the FO even in the light of all that has happened throughout the years.
When we are sold a line about losing Mercado because of our crazy depth at OF and HAVING to lose Mercado or others to Rule 5 thus forcing our hand in a trade only to then not give a guy like Garcia who they put out ahead of Mercado, even a slight chance to show us why we HAD to trade Mercado, then yes i will be confused and question their decision making
Whether you agree with others logic, doesn’t meant those people don’t follow a sensible line of reasoning to get to their outcome that has plenty of validity
I NEVER said he couldn’t be traded, that is pretty obvious given how the procedure works…
As other posters said as well, Urias? Cecil? Ravelo? all are options too… and maybe even a few are better guys TO trade as they may have more potential value in a more limited time frame…Even delaying the Kim signing some would give us more wiggle room in clearing some time for making a move without showing our hand that wouldn’t be out of the ordinary as we saw several deals take multiple weeks to finalize.
I am fine with moving on from Adolis, I am not ok with the fact that his presence was a part of us feeling like we HAD to trade Mercado. And I am not ok with not trading him ahead of time.
Even if they did not know they were getting Kim, they did KNOW they were going to add SOMEONE at some point and that they were going to kick Garcia to the curb as soon as they got someone from outside, thus they could have been working on a trade for the entire offseason. yet, they are now forced to trade him in a short window and we are supposed to act like they didn’t know they were going to add to the roster at some point.
Whether Garcia is a world beater or not, doesn’t matter we heavily invested money in his signing from Cuba and we aren’t going to at least try to recoup a lower level minor leaguer out of it when we decide to move on from him? That seems poor planning and a waste of resources.
People cried out at the wasted return from Adams in YEpez and yet know so many are looking at him much more favorably. even the lottery tickets have value, and it seems sad that we are probably going to end up with nothing when we obviously COULD have.
At least to this point, as i haven’t seen any mentions of a trade.
December 19, 2019 at 4:04 pm #117172Once again, one thing that we, as fans, do not know is whether or not the front office tried to trade Garcia. Maybe they tried and couldn’t find a suitable return. It will probably never be known, for sure, whether or not they tried.
jager, I would be willing to bet that Brian did not aim that last paragraph of his reply to you, at you. I think that was more to the ones who always seem to find a problem with any move the front office makes.
December 19, 2019 at 4:29 pm #117173forsch, you are correct. And to be clear, jager, I would never accuse you of providing “no explanation or logic”. Happy Holidays.
December 19, 2019 at 6:50 pm #117175I would not be shocked to see Garcia’s rights sold to.a Japanese team
December 19, 2019 at 7:17 pm #117176Interesting idea. He played in Japan briefly in 2016, the year before he signed with the Cardinals. I wonder if that experience was good or bad. One thing for sure – it was very short (four games).

ParticipantI couldn’t care less about Garcia at this point. Even moreso due to our excessive supply of OFers that are better than him ~ Arozarena, Thomas, O’Neill, Bader, and Carlson would all be ahead of him (even Edman)
I like the Kim signing. We’ve needed a consistent LH starter since Garcia left after 2016, and Gomber and Cabrera can be eased back into the fold if necessary now. Also, we don’t have to press Martinez. Our first four look really solid to me and we can audition that fifth spot off once spring training breaks (and one of the starters goes down)
I would really like it if they were able to get another couple 4A starters to supplement the roster with going into the spring like they did back in 2016 with Brebbia, Bowman, McGuire, Sulbaran, Hefner, etc. They didn’t work out as starters, but you never know if you’d get another Brebbia or Bowman.
Love to see an Alex Wood signing to supplement Kim also.
December 20, 2019 at 11:24 am #117202Good to see you stop by, Pads. On getting more 4A starters, they already added one in Nabil Crismatt, but do they really need more?
Here are my 16 projected Memphis rotation candidates, 13 of whom already have Triple-A experience (only the last three names do not):
Crismatt
Gomber
Ponce de Leon
Helsley
Cabrera
Reyes
Woodford
Shew
Austin Warner
Parsons
Ellis
Herget
Kruczynski
Rondon
Oviedo
FaGaldeP.S. And the Memphis bullpen looks loaded, too. Here are 10 with no promotions from Springfield, like Ronnie Williams, for example. It also assumes Junior is with StL, which may or may not happen out of the gate.
Morales
Whitley
Meisinger
Cruz
Ramirez
Elledge
Dobzanski
Jones
Gonzalez
KaminskyDecember 21, 2019 at 3:01 pm #117255AdGar had to be DFAed…..it was the right call. Indeed, Brian, very nice indeed to see Pads swing on by. As far as FAGalde goes…..don’t be surprised to see Alexander “The Great” break camp as a member of the Memphis Redbirds. And then shortly thereafter, get his first (but certainly not his last) cup of coffee with the Big Club.
December 21, 2019 at 3:04 pm #117256Garcia has been traded to the Rangers for Cash considerations.
