Both Roberts and Boone had extensive Big League careers as players that included stints with the teams they now manage. They have a combined 29 post-season games as players and over 110 combined post-season games as Big League managers. Furthermore, Boone comes from a family that includes 3 other well established Big League players. It’s not unlike comparing a 4th grade school girl to a 27 year old centerfold model…Incidentally, the only foul ball I ever managed to snag came in ’94 off the bat of Aaron’s older brother, Bret Boone…Haha!
June 4, 2023 at 10:14 pm #223323Why do you think the Cardinals hired Marmol?
June 4, 2023 at 10:14 pm #223324And yeah, I’m aware that a lot of managers wear the pullovers and I acknowledge that I’m picking at nits when I mention him doing so. But I don’t like him as Cardinal manager for many reasons and it’s one more thing I can throw into the mix…Haha!
June 4, 2023 at 10:15 pm #223325I’m guessing he owed them money…
June 4, 2023 at 10:17 pm #223327I don’t think that is the reason.
June 4, 2023 at 10:17 pm #223328the manager is not our only problem and to pretend it is is at best naive and at worst something else.
Yes exactly. The manager is exactly what the FO wants the manager to be. Replacing him with another drone would be pointless. The manager we have is just a symptom of the problem, he is not the problem. I can’t see that Marmol does anything to help at all, but I think he was hired specifically because of a willing ness to not be a factor at all, a willingness which I think Shildt did not have. Mo would have made sure this time.
June 4, 2023 at 10:21 pm #223329That is correct bling. Guys like Herzog, Torre, and LaRussa will not be walking through the door anytime soon. This organization does not want a manager like that.
June 4, 2023 at 10:21 pm #223330All jokes aside, I have no idea why the Cardinals hired the current Redbird manager, but I know they talked with Skip Schumaker and I can only guess that during those talks Skippy probably mentioned that he always paid attention and learned a lot while playing for TLR and that killed his chances…
June 4, 2023 at 10:24 pm #223331Yet the Cardinals recruited Skip hard to come back to St. Louis to be the bench coach. They obviously wanted him in the organization.
But these are the same guys who chose Mike Matheny over Terry Francona.
June 4, 2023 at 10:27 pm #223332There’s a lot that’s not working.
June 4, 2023 at 10:29 pm #223333I’ve managed 10,000 Cardinal games in Strat-O-Matic. That makes me extremely qualified to take over the team as far as I am concerned. And the first thing I will do is to fix those stupid lineups we are forced to endure.

June 4, 2023 at 10:32 pm #223334You know, I really soured on Matheny when he handed the baseball to Wacha out in SF during the last game of the ’14 NLCS, but he wasn’t all that bad. I think the players respected him and he did guide the Cardinals to both a NL Pennant and a 100 W season. I entirely acknowledge that I lost faith in him, but he was nowhere near as bad as the current guy.
June 4, 2023 at 10:33 pm #223335Haha!…Have you ever beaten one of Dusty’s teams on that Strat-O-Matic, Rats?
June 4, 2023 at 10:37 pm #223336Ask the Royals about Matheny.
Matheny inherited a very good situation here and did well for awhile before running out of steam.
In my opinion Shildt was the best of the three rookie skippers. He was the protege of LaRussa and Kissell.
June 4, 2023 at 10:43 pm #2233371td…….I’ve won at least ten (10) World Championships in Strat-O-Matic.
Pack up OliMo, things are about to change. The Ratsbuddy is coming to town!
June 4, 2023 at 10:45 pm #223338Schildt wasn’t bad. Don’t know what happened, but life isn’t always fair and on the surface it certainly looked like he was treated unfairly to say the least.
June 4, 2023 at 10:50 pm #223339That’s what we need, Rats! I can envision a resurrection of the TLR/Dusty rivalry with you and Ol’ Dusty mixing it up in the dirt out around the HP area during a Redbird/Astros WS…Haha!
June 5, 2023 at 4:52 am #223346The Rangers will have Bruce Bochy and Wil Venable in their dugout along with our old friends Mike Maddux and Donnie Ecker.
June 5, 2023 at 6:09 am #223347We would be a much better team with Schildt as the mgr.! He seems much more seasoned and most important the guys respect him. I think there is lack of respect for Ollie and guys just don’t seem to gel with him.
I think he needs to go.. sooner would be better than later.
But then again, the real problem is the FO. Even if they change mgrs., they will only bring someone in that they can use as a puppet, as they do now.June 5, 2023 at 6:48 am #223349It may very well be true that some Cardinal players don’t respect the manager, none of us know for sure. My question is that even if it is true is that an excuse for the players to go out on the field and lay a collective egg? Why give these guys a pass? They are making millions of dollars yet are performing like they should be playing in Palm Beach. Maybe they should show some pride in the uniform too.
I don’t have a problem with criticizing Marmol but this entire organization needs an enema from the top down. Front office, field staff, and players. Marmol is the easiest target because he is the easiest to remove.
June 5, 2023 at 7:34 am #223351This town needs an enema!

June 5, 2023 at 8:23 am #223356Scott has hit the nail on the head repeatedly here. Ollie may not be a good manager, but until until fans stop showing up for the product the ownership and front office keep putting out there, nothing changes. No big splash free agent signings to fill needs. Instead we will continue to be treated to winning just enough to be competitive with the hopes of catching lightning in a bottle in post season. MO has given the fans a wash rinse and repeat for many years now.
June 5, 2023 at 9:22 am #223359This Rangers series could be further embarrassment. Bochy ran circles around Matheny in that post season series back in 2012, and will likely school Marmol a couple of times in the next few days.
Plus we might have to endure a couple of long ones off the bat of Adolis Garcia, who will no doubt want to show the organization that gave up on him a thing or two.
While Marmol is not the only problem, firing him is about the only realistic option the club has right now. They are not going to make wholesale roster changes, even if they could. And they won’t be canning the POBO or GM. All of that will wait until off season, if it even happens.
I foresee an announcement soon that the esteemed Rats is getting fitted for a Cardinal road uniform “as we speak”.
PS – I have managed a lot of Cardinal teams in APBA and Action PC, but unfortunately have the same issue as the real life managers. I have had teams that finished with the best regular season record, but lost in the post season. So Bike Mike should not be considered a managerial candidate or you will have more of the same. But at least the regular season team would likely be good. 🙂
June 5, 2023 at 9:31 am #223360The front office is certainly complicit in at least the International Program where we have no home grown international players on the except Mercado who is a retread and Mikolas if you want to count him. We also have no home grown international players in the MLB or Baseball America top 100 list.
I think our international scouting department has done a decent job of identifying MLB level talent. The problem is that a majority of those players ended up helping other teams.
Oscar Taveras tragically died.
Carlos Martinez was good for a few years then faded.
Alex Reyes was highly regarded but couldn’t stay healthy.
Sandy Alcantara was traded.
Randy Arozarena was traded.
Adolis Garcia was given away for “cash considerations”.The one guy in the system now that I would keep my eye on is Won Bin Cho. He could have a bright future.
