Well, they wanted to trade him because now the bill comes due. He played for $10 million last year, it will be $25 million this year…
The Cardinals evidently thought that when he signed here because he wanted to play closer to home, he was just saying that as part of their marketing strategy.
The Cards should trade some International money to the Dodgers for the Competitive Balance pick they got from Cincy in the trade for Lux!
What a shock! The sport’s behemoth signs the stereotypical star. Once again the Dodgers prove that they operate in a different atmosphere than the Cardinals. It’s like FCS vs FBS at this point.
It took a whopping $6.5M to sign him. I am sure none of the other 29 teams could have afforded that. He obviously wanted to play for the Dodgers.
If this guy was only in it for the money he could have waited two years and sign for $325M like his new teammate Yamamoto did.

Sasaki was always signing with the dodgers, the meeting with teams and coming down to the Jays, padres and dodgers was always a sideshow/smokescreen. He probably would have took less money than he signed for b/c of endorsements in Japan

Apples and oranges. Constrained market vs. unconstrained. If Sasaki is as good as advertised, he may make more than the three of them combined down the road when the market sets his value.

What I am saying is that I reject the notion that the Dodgers are once again buying the top player. Every team could have afforded Sasaki. Sometimes players just want to play for a winning team. That is why Alabama used to always get the best football players and Duke the best basketball players.
The Dodgers aren’t the only wealthy team. You don’t think the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, and Cubs could afford to offer Sasaki an expensive long term deal? Of course they could but the player chose the Dodgers anyway.
What I am saying is that I reject the notion that the Dodgers are once again buying the top player. Every team could have afforded Sasaki.
That wasn’t the notion that I was getting at. Yet, the Dodgers’ financial largesse isn’t always apparent in signing the big money free agents. It’s just as much apparent in their approach to scouting, making international connections and how they are able to convince guys to want to play for them.
The Cards were never as successful as this, even when they were winning the Central every year.
There are rumblings the Dodgers may be investigated for the Sasaki signing. Some clubs are suggesting a pre-agreement before the negotiating window opened.
I don’t see anything happening there with the investigation. It is against the rules to have an agreement with IAFA players before the signing date, but teams have agreements with most of these kids since they are 12 or 13. If you penalize the Dodgers, then you should be penalizing all 30 teams since they all do this every year.
