Not really a signing yet, but a promise to….
Michael Cordero, (3B) son of MLB pitcher Francisco Cordero will be signing with the Cardinals next signing period when he is old enough.

Last January I saw Baseball America list Oliver Gonzalez as an International signing by the Cardinals, but he never showed up on the Cardinals list. I figured after never seeing his name again that BA got it wrong and the Cards never really signed him. Today, I was checking for info on all the new players for the DSL team and BA has a write-up about him, including his signing bonus. I did a search on his name and found a MiLB page for him and that the Cards signed him Feb. 1. Do you have any insight on this player?
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/st-louis-cardinals-2024-international-review/BA’s writeup is pretty comprehensive. I do not know why the organization did not announce his signing. Maybe there was a delay in his approvals so he missed the 1/15 press release, but that is just a guess.

The Cards DSL team just had more hits & scored more runs today than they did in the entirety of last season!! Optimism for the major league team in 2030!! Haha
Gronky – That is almost true! That was such a weird game. The Cards had control then completely blew it, then almost lost it as their opponent had the bases jammed with one out in the bottom of the 9th, and then rattled off 8 runs in the 12th inning to win. Our offense had 8 walks and 16 strikeouts. Our pitchers allowed 17 walks to 13 strikeouts. Only in the DSL . . . and t-ball.

Btw…it wasn’t great seeing the Cards top bonus guy not get out if the 1st inning! I’m sure there was tons of rust flying off him, but it’s still a reminder as to why most teams won’t spend big bucks on teenage, Latin pitchers. Of course, in classic Mo style (zigging when everyone else zags), that’s where the Cards invest thier money.
Speaking of higher bonus DSL pitchers, what happened to the 6’8″ pitcher they signed last year? Did he already wash out or just abandon baseball to play for the DR Olympic basketball team?? Haha
Am I alone in thinking that this year’s crop of DSL hitting prospects is the Cards best in at least 5 years? Certainly light years better than the prior 2 years crop of players. Padilla and Rodriguez seem destined for thier stateside debuts to start next year. Hope Mo doesn’t include either if them in a trade, the “throw-in” that the Ray’s will invariably ask for when the Cards inquire about Zach Eflin!

Looks like Reiner Lopez has been pitching in relief with an inning or so each outing. Last pitched on July 17 and brought his overall ERA down to 6.75. July ERA is just 2.45 tho. Just 18 years old, so time for growth and improvement.

Well, we already knew the Cardinals DSL efforts were not productive. Even if it was magically fixed right now, it would be years before we see any results pop out the top of the system. I don’t understand how it got that way, or stayed that way. It sounds like it’s as bad as ever.
Not sure if the Cardinals total listed here includes the two DSL players signed in October (see Roster Matrix thread), but sounds like we still have some money to spend for this year! Not sure if they can pick up any good prospects yet this year since many of the better prospects will wait until the new signing period starting January 15.

Yairo Enrique Padilla…….this switch hitting phenom out of the Dominican is not old enough to vote or purchase cigarettes in this country yet, but boy is this kid going to be a hitter. Look for “The Cisco Kid” to poke double-digit taters moving forward.
* I won’t let the proverbial cat out of the bag just yet, but I will say that Yairo does crack my Top 50 Prospect list.
Speaking of the international market, it looks like Roki Sasaki is going to be coming to America if he gets his way. He’s run a career 2.02 ERA and 11.2 K/9, 2.0 BB/9. Kiley McDaniel mentioned that there’s talk that he might prefer a smaller market to the typical Dodgers. That may just mean Seattle. Lol.
0.1% chance that St Louis is in on him even but it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
I’ve read things saying Sasaki is coming over and other saying he is waiting for 2 years. So I am unsure. If he does, then Stl and every other team will be calling as he would be under IAFA rules and couldn’t get more than the $5-6 million most clubs have in IAFA space. I imagine he would wait for January 15th if he did want to go that route.
If the guys on MLB Radio are accurate than St. Louis is out. They were talking about Sasaki yesterday and they were stating the his preferred location is the Dodgers. He wants to play with Ohtani and Yamamoto.
Sasaki would be leaving a lot of money on the table if he came to MLB before turning 25. If he does the two favorites would be the Dodgers and Padres.
Sasaki is officially “coming to America.” Let the low price bidding war commence. Can we send $50M to some St Louis business to use to endorse him in the small market he prefers? Haha.

I imagine all 30 teams will contact him. A potential ace for a few million is something any franchise can afford.
Someone should sell him in having a unique identity and not signing with the Dodgers. Try to convince him that being on an Ohtani and Yamamoto team means he can’t stand out as much and create his own brand.
