Contreras. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I can’t get too excited about guy who is going to hit .240. Herrera will probably be out hitting him a year from now.
Well, if they can sign Contreras this will be an important upgrade to the line up. The Redbirds will get a catcher with a career slash line of .256/.349/.459/.808 with an OPS+ of 115. I am just concerned that it is reported he is asking for a fourth year and the Cards are only offering three.
You are right about that .240 batting average. I don’t look at on base or slugging at all. Catchers need to hit a lot of singles or they aren’t worth mentioning.
MLB Trade Rumors just reported it might be 5 years. I’m not a big fan of 5 years for him, but it’s not my money.

AND, most importantly a game 1 starter in a playoff series. Bieber and Syndergaard wouldn’t break the bank FYI. Hudson and Matz to the Orioles or another pitching needy team wouldn’t suck either?
The moment Whitley (I believe) hit him in the face with a pitch, and he got up and acted like a gentleman and stayed in the game, it seemed obvious he wanted to be a Cardinal. I have never seen a player show more clearly a desire to impress the opponents.
Well, seems like it’s done at 5 years. I kind of like it? This seems like the kind of deal you only make now that the NL has the DH. So I don’t think it really blocks Herrera. I’m kind of talking myself into it. Sean Murphy must have been exorbitant.
What’s ironic about this is that I was just playing Strat-O-Matic, Cardinals in Wrigley against the Cubs. The 2021 season. And in this game, while it’s being announced that Contreras is signing with St. Louis, he homers off of Jon Lester. And then with two on and two out in the 9th and the Cards leading 5-3 Contreras makes the final out by flying to O’Neill in LF.
Thought this was quite the coincidence.

I like the move. It is a win now move and it definitely lengthens the lineup. Going five years is not that unreasonable. Contreras is only 30 and going five years will lower the AAV. It could alter their plans for Herrera but Contreras can DH some too.
Also this move will make the Cub fans head explode so that is an added bonus.
I’ll take Contreras over Murphy or anyone else that was a possibility behind HP for the Cardinals. I’ve often heard mention of his supposedly weak defensive game, but I’ve never witnessed it. Obviously I don’t see every Cubs’ game, but I’ve seen plenty of him vs. the Cardinals and he’s always impressd me as more than capable as a catcher. In addition to that, he can not only hit, but also seems to amp up his bat in key situations. He’s dangerous with a bat. In fact, he impresses me as not at all unlike Yadier Molina with a bat in his hands and the outcome of a game in the balance. Johnny did a real good job filling the need for a catcher.
I will be in the minority and say I am not thrilled about this. Average defense at best. Another right hand hitter. The money could have been used somewhere else. If the Cubs thought he was worth it they would have kept him. Pitching needs attention and so does left handed power bat to balance the lineup. A serviceable lower tier catcher would have done. But whatever.

We potentially have Donovan, Nootbaar and Gorman in the starting lineup. With Edman and Carlson as switch hitters. Our 4th outfielder, Burleson, is also left-handed.
This is not a year we need a LH batter. I would rather them give the LH batters we do have some playing time.
So give the lefties we have a chance but invest 87.5M on another righty? Why not spend less on catcher and more on pitching. Makes no sense to me. We needed a catcher but we need pitching more.

We had no catcher on the major league roster besides Knizner. The Cardinals have been clear they do not think Herrera is ready to start the season at catcher next year.
You can’t possibly say we needed pitching more than a position where we had a backup player and a guy who is going to start the year at AAA.
Why Contreras? I said a lower tier catcher would have been fine. and yes pitching wins in the post season where we have failed miserably lately.

I can’t even come up with a rationalization. Contreras was helped by Wrigley, so he’s probably not as good as his numbers. (Slugging % 55 points higher at the Friendly Confines.) He hasn’t hit in Busch III, slugging just .378 there. He can’t hit “power pitching” per Baseball-Reference, with a career line of .202/.310/.328. His October hitting record beyond the division series is dismal. And the team that knew him best, let him go without so much as a ready replacement.Plus there’s all the other much more substantive reasons I hate this signing, as detailed on the separate Contreras thread. This is a bad day, folks. Real bad.
