Does anyone really care what the Cubs do any longer?
Manfred ruined the rivalry by shortening it. Other than being in a division. We aren’t really rivals any longer. Everyone else is. We should just scrap the divisions now
Cubs aren’t really sellers or buyers. They’ll cast off dead weight but still try and contend next year. Do they have a righty bat we may need? Lol
July 25, 2024 at 6:17 am #261527Some people do care. Just the other day, on another thread, there was a lengthy discussion started by those who would rather see the Brewers beat the Cubs even though Milwaukee is in first place. That is now deep the feelings are for some.
Personally, since the Cards are just 1-6 against the Brewers this season, I think they need all the help they can get. But even then, as was pointed out, there is very little difference between being the worst division winner and best wild card. Of course, the Cards are assured of neither.
At least the Cubs seem resigned to repeat their old tag line, “Better luck next year!”.
July 25, 2024 at 8:10 am #261536Long in the past I was rather regularly one of many who produced a very respectable sea of red in
Wrigley, rivaled by en equally respectable sea of Cubbie blue that would overtake Busch. It’s mostly younger fans who carry that off, not so much the old duffers. I don’t go anymore, or even watch anymore, since midway through last season, so I don’t have a feel for how well that aspect of the historic rivalry is holding up.As a young man with a slim bankroll, my friends and I would drive up I55 and stay in one of the many flea bags a block or two off the main drag in the china town area on the near south side. From there you just hop on the red line train, go right on through downtown, and end up in Wrigleyville, a block or so from the park and ample watering holes. Sometimes we could catch a Sox game also, since their park was right near where we were staying on the near south side. I do not know if those flea bags are still there. I do know today’s fans would not stay there.
July 25, 2024 at 8:35 am #261538When the schedule had more divisional games I would sometimes hear people complain that their team played too many games against the same teams and not wnough against other teams. Then they open up the schedule and you hear how your team does not play enough “rivalry” games. Can’t please everyone.
Personally I would have it so you play your division rivals a few more times than other league teams, and you play other league teams a few more times than inter-league teams. But the logistics of that is quite a task.
July 25, 2024 at 9:11 am #261543I never found the charm in Wrigley field. It’s a toilet. I was always grateful I didn’t have to go there to follow my home team.

Yes I do care. I want to see them lose every single day. On days that the Cards win and the Cubs lose I tend to sleep better. Old feelings die hard I guess.
And trust me in that diehard Cub fans feel the same away about the Cards. I have signed in as a guest on some Cub blogs to just read and not post. Let’s just say that most of them have some very unfriendly things to say about Cardinal players and Cardinal fans. Cub fans are extrememly obnoxious so when I look at the standings this morning and see them in 5th place in the NLC I think to myself “good they need to stay there.”
The thing to keep in mind is that the Cubs have more finanical resources than the Cardinals and currently a much better farm system than the Cardinals so I don’t expect the current situation to last forever so I choose to enjoy it while I can.
July 28, 2024 at 2:52 pm #261902If the Cubs aren’t sellers then I don’t think the Cardinals will be considering we are currently ahead of them in the standings.

Cubs are one of the 6 or so teams to check in on Blake Snell, too, so they seem to be out of sell mode. Still iffy as to whether Snell goes anywhere, though his name is clearly out there

July 28, 2024 at 3:57 pm #261912Difference between a major market and non-major market:
Cubs (4 games under, 6 games out of Wild Card, last place): Buy
Rays (2 games over, 3.5 games out of WC): Sell everything not nailed down https://t.co/03Vduz7eCS

August 28, 2024 at 2:55 pm #265813I’m sure they do but they are still going to finish ahead of us in the standings this year.
August 28, 2024 at 3:06 pm #265814And they’ll destroy us in actual attendance. They’re still selling a lot of suds at Wrigley.
