A data point for Arenado. Bellinger is owed $52.5 million over the next two years, with the Cubs paying $5 million and getting a 30-year-old pitcher in return who has been up and down over three years for two teams.

Of course, you eat more money, you get a better player in return.

The CHC found a dump for Bellingers contract and receive AAAA depth with an option in return. Appears the Cubs weren’t interested in the player return and ate as little as possible.

It will be interesting to see if the Cubs reinvest this money in another free agent talent or if they are just sending Bellinger out and bringing Tucker in. That’s a modest improvement, maybe 1-3 wins. But if the Brewers are worse, this probably is enough to make the Cubs into the NL Central front runners.

Bellinger was definitely a salary dump. They essentially exchanged Bellinger for Tucker, which I think is a huge upgrade for the Cubs. Tucker is a perrenial all star and legit MVP candidate.

It also frees up a big chunk of money to spend elsewhere. They could now go after Bregman, Burnes, Rosaki, etc….whatever they want. They are currently $60M under the CBT line so they will make more big moves and will be the clear favorite to win the NLC in my opinion.

Why didn’t the Yankees just sign Tucker for slightly more than the Cubs paid him? That’s what doesn’t make sense to me. Why pay all that money to Bellinger instead of Tucker?

Tucker wasn’t a free agent. The Yankees wanted Tucker but the Astros preferred the trade package that the Cubs offered over what the Yankees offered.

Judge to RF is a priority. Bellinger to CF helps the NYY D, even if he is a lesser bat than Tucker.

All true. I actually forgot that he was gotten in a trade. My bad. I blame old age.

I’m actually still a bit surprised the Yankees did the deal they did. Bellinger’s contract isn’t a good one. I’m sure the Cubs were happy to shed it for $5 million.

Who is target 2 in CF if they pass on Bellinger?
    —-
Fangraphs has Bellingers last 2 seasons at 53.3mil value. He’s owed 52.5mil

FG has Nado at 46.8mil value the last two seasons, w/StL due to pay 49mil. And then there’s that 3rd season…

The Cubs were hoping Bellinger would opt out of his contract but he didn’t so I am sure they are celebrating this trade big time. I bet his Fangraphs numbers from 2024 were much worse than 2023. The fact that he didn’t opt out means that he knew he was not getting that deal on the open market.

Yep, contender risk. Evil empires like mvp’s. They collect them.

Bellinger should have the success he wants in NY to opt out next season. I mean if Matt Carpenter can make it there…

Cubs make another pen addition. Read the article as to how they’ve beefed up their pen. The Cardinals? Not so much.

Our old pal Kitty has been lights out in the cubbies pen……lately as their closer. He did a whale of a job for us last year and even though he’s getting a bit long in the tooth, you can’t discard a wonderfully dependable arm without getting something equally valuable in return. Kitty rocks!
