I was thinking of the Rays catcher, it starts with a Z, but I can’t recall his name at the moment.

All that backload stuff counts against this years budget. When they pay the players is between them.

So with that 40mil (28 & 12) I had Z (catcher), Bassitt, Q and Chafin; instead of Contretas, Wainwright, Flaherty, Hudson and Stratton.

I am honestly ecstatic about our odds in 2023. I think the Cards have built one of the best Cards teams that I’ve seen in my lifetime. The offense is great. The defense is great. The bullpen should be pretty great. The starters are fine. And there is good depth at every position in case of injury except catcher and shortstop. I think it’s great that fans are sitting around complaining about Knizner being our biggest issue. If backup catcher is the only real thing that scares you, then you have an awesome team. Sure, we don’t have elite starting pitching. But no team is elite at everything (ok, the Dodgers were pretty close last year). If pitching becomes an issue, then we will upgrade it mid-season. But either way, I really think we are running away with the division and there’s a very, very good possibility that we finish with a top 3 record in baseball. I’m typically kind of a pessimist. But it’s so hard to find fault with the team we have. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. And I’m thrilled that we have the owners and general manager that we do have. Other teams and fans admire the Cardinals organization so much and wish they had the leadership we have. And they would love to be in the position to complain that their backup catcher is likely a below average player.

JJ, perhaps you were referring to Mike Zunino?

Jnevel, I think the Cardinals should be favorites to win the division. The question is are they better prepared for October? Right now they aren’t but we will see what they do at the deadline or maybe Walker will have a rookie year like Pujols.

Yessir… I’m looking forward to Walker’s name being placed next to these three rookie seasons.

    Joe Dimaggio .323/29/125
    Ted Williams .327/32/145
    Albert Pujols .329/37/130

Not too shabby for 3 beginners. With the solitary exception of Teddy’s RBI total, it’s easy to make a case that Albert’s was the best of the three. Get Walker in there too. A new broom sweeps clean.

Totally agree with your post, Jnevel. This team is loaded with exciting players.

I’d say so too, bc. I’d also like to know if anyone thinks there’s a better line-up in the NL than the one the Redbirds are expected to feature on opening day? I can’t come up with one.

The San Diego Padres. Also, the Braves, Mets, Dodgers and Phillies could each make an argument. Depends on the measurements used.

Thanks GS, Zunino has always been a tough name for me to remember.

And now that the Cards have a Zuniga, it could be even more difficult…

BW…I’m sure they could and would. However, would YOU take their line-up over the one expected from the Cardinals on opening day? I wouldn’t.

If Donovan starts at 2B, that gives you Gorman, Yepez, Burleson, Walker and Gomez as the next layer. Not many teams can match that.

I agree quantity is not a problem.

What’s the best guess regarding who gets the most PA’s from the DH in ’23?

San Diego, Philadelphia, Atlanta. Their lineups are better. But that’s why they play the games. We will see.

Good question. We could hope that this guy or that does what he has so far not done, namely hit decently in MLB. Or we could pick Yepez, since he at least hit respectably for 274 PAs, and hits righties and lefties equally. Hopefully some of the other guys will hit though.

The Cardinals pushed more runs across HP than both SD and PHI in ’22. ATL outscored the Cardinals by 17 runs.

I’m hoping it’s Gorman. If he indeed ends up with the most PA’s at DH, it’ll mean he’s putting it in play and ripping the baseball the way he did during his first 20 games in the Big Leagues in ’22.

I thought we were talking 2023. Those teams play in tougher division than the Cardinals. Like I said that’s why they play the games.

Well, ’22 is all there is to go by. When runs start crossing HP in ’23. we’ll have a better idea. However, my choice would be the current projected ’23 Redbird line-up over any of those three teams.

That was last year. For 2023, the Padres added Bogaerts, get a full season of Soto and get Tatis back. That is a LOT of additional horsepower. With Machado, that is four core players in the lineup to StL’s two. The Phillies added Trea Turner to a very strong lineup.

Hey, we got a new catcher. We also got a guy that, although I’ve never seen him play, everyone on here claims is pretty good…Maybe he’ll pan out. At any rate, I’ll go on the record and say that the good baseball gypsies see to it that the Redbirds push more runs across HP than any of those other 3 teams in ’23 just so long as the Cardinal field manager doesn’t have the line-up card filled out by the members of a lunatic asylum…

We’ve added one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. In addition, O’Neill and Carlson may be healthy and have the kind of years they’re capable of. Plus we’ll have a full year of Nootbaar. And then there’s Walker…..

I think I’m with you 1toughdominican. While San Diego certainly has a great shot too, I’m going to say the Cardinals score the most runs in the NL this year. There are really only 2 scenarios that are really bad for St Louis. 1) Edman gets hurt. Ugh. We picked up a few guys that might be ok backups in a pinch and we still have Kramer Robertson, but this would be really bad both for our offense and defense. 2) Contreras gets hurt. Again with a big ugh. If it’s for a length of time, then I guess we bring up Herrera and he and Knizner do their best. But that is likely a hole in the lineup. Otherwise, we have so many backup combinations for everywhere else with good hitting backups. Like Bling said, quantity is not an issue. Many of the other teams listed above don’t have that at all. One injury could hurt some of those offenses and 2 injuries really de-rail them. We have 12 guys plus Walker and Gomez who likely will be average or above average MLB hitters. That’s crazy good depth. I can’t remember ever having anything close to that going into a season. Now if we could only have 5 above average starting pitchers. . .

What has Tatis Jr. done in the past couple of seasons?

    1tough asked:

Well, he hit 42 homers and was the National League MVP two years ago. Last year, he didn’t play. His career OPS is .965, higher than anyone on the Cardinals.
