Now needed: a real 2B.
This should put to bed every thought of adding an OF bat or any sort of trade that would increase payroll at all. There’s no way any other team is gonna take any of our payroll either. Your starting OF will be Carlson-Bader-Fowler, without any doubt.
Looks like they’re going to clear some payroll to perhaps sign an outfielder? Next move to trade Carlos?
They’re clearing room to save money, bc. That much is clear.
And with today’s news, it’s very clear that to trade Carlos now will require the Cards to accept 0 in return. They might even have to throw in a prospect and eat money just to get someone to take him at all.

Mo would rather pay his (likely) back to back Gold Glove up the middle defender to go away than try to do his job and make a reasonable trade.
Appears the FO has decided trading Kolten and his option amount of 12.5mil this winter, could force them to eat more than the 1mil buyout they have in-hand.
Given today’s news, I would think a smart strategy would be to start Carp at 3B and Edman at 2B, then bring up Gorman as soon as you can keep him for an extra year and play him full time there. In a punt year, I’d rather see Gorman hitting .150 than Carp doing the same. Give us a hint of the future.
There may not be any fans next year either.

Now 2022, well, that could be better… I hope.nate, normally I consider you to be too pessimistic, but I think you might be even a tad rosy here.
We have no idea how the tight the belt is going to be. Just to save the other half of their salaries, would the Cards agree to pay half of Carpenter’s, Miller’s and Fowler’s salaries? Maybe even CMart?
They invest the money in Waino and Yadi, who sell tickets. I can see how the team would market around them.

Sosa is also a possibility for 2B along with Edman and Schrock. At 3B, Montero could be used, as well.

Bingo, Forsch. Carp can hang around and get a few at bats here and there or DH occasionally. He also gets his farewell to the 10K fans allowed in September for his final home series. Fowler can either “opt out” and collect his salary or be cut and try to sign as a FA on a likely league minimum deal elsewhere.
Or Fowler could accept a trade instead of being cut. Maybe that way the Cardinals only have to pay $12.5 million instead of just under $16 million.
No matter what happens through the end of the 2021 season, the Cardinals had better make a strong play to having a championship caliber team in 2022.

I think we can shut down the threads regarding which bat we are going to get this winter. It is obvious we aren’t adding anything. This is going to be a winter of subtracting. I had not seriously considered this until a couple of hours ago but it seems to me they actually may let Yadi and Waino both walk.
Hey if we are going to go down this road let’s go all the way and dump everything we can. Let’s eat some money and send Carp, Fowler, Miller, and CMart elsewhere for a few AA prospects. Maybe even Mikolas if we want to eat some more contract. Let’s go ahead and go with youth and see what we have.

Gscottar, I wouldn’t even be mad if the team went that route at this point. Although I’d probably keep Carlos on the off chance that he’d be worth more after the 2021 season.
I am with you 25. I have secretly wanted this team to do a rebuild for several years instead of annually trying to build a 87 win team that squeaks into the playoffs on the last day of the season.
2021 may actually be the perfect year for a rebuild. The front office was always afraid of tanking because it would hurt attendance. Well attendance in 2021 is going to be garbage anyway because of covid so let the tanking commence.
I think mspaid is right in that they’re going to do everything they can to save money. But I’m pretty sure they’re going to use that saved money to offset their 2020 loss, not to have more to spend on another player or players. All of the other MLB teams are surely looking for ways to offset their loss for 2020, also. If the fans don’t show up next season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some teams filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.
In addition to saving money by not picking up options, I think there are going to be teams choosing to not offer arbitration to some players. The Padres, for one, could let Tommy Pham walk rather than pay him the $9M he is expected to win in arbitration.
Tanking works a whole lot better when your assets are desirable and tradeable.
For sure. The Cards do have some useful assets, but not many. Paul Dejong has value as a cheap, decent SS. Bader has some value as a glove guy in CF. That’s about it. I suppose they could trade Flaherty if they wanted to get crazy but he’s hard to replace in your rotation if you hope to compete in 2022 or 2023.
