Brian, your disdain for Boras knows no bounds. I say that based on the many many disparaging posts you have made about him. I’m not really fond of most agents either but this almost seems to be personal. Anything you would like to share?
January 4, 2019 at 10:20 am #79248I have often noted that Boras is exceptionally good at his job. He exploits the system to the advantage of his clients. The only time I met him 1-1, he was very personable.
In this particular case, I think Harper’s importance is being overly-inflated, but that is the agent doing his job. I sense some of the slowness in the market caused by the big two may be hurting other players, but again, that is their problem to work through. However, if you think Boras is being mistreated, feel free to defend him.
January 4, 2019 at 10:22 am #79250I have no reason to defend him. I was just looking for more context into your remarks about him.
January 4, 2019 at 10:28 am #79251Then you are going to have to be specific about what remarks you are referencing when you accuse. If you are referring to the rumor post, of course, I have no idea if Boras or his associates really slipped the news about Harper’s supposed multiple contract offers from Washington, but I do understand how the rumor mill can work. Sometimes the media gets used to deliver messages. You see the same national reporters with information that seems to be coming from agents. Other times, news is leaked from teams, though in this case, I do not understand why the Nats would want that. Anyway, I am not sure why you view this as a critical comment about Boras, though. Like I said, he is just doing his thing (if he was even involved here). We just need to keep matters in perspective as these are very high stakes poker games.

Context is important. For those who do not subscribe, here is what I wrote. It seems very clear and I stand behind it.
Just before this, Derek had mentioned Cabrera as a possible Kevin Siegrist-type of reliever. I offered this as part of a consideration that he could be more.
My bad. I should have said “a scouts viewpoint” or someone else’s view on Cabrera.
I like the comps to Siegrist and Martinez though. Kind of tells you where he falls if everything goes right.
Back to Harper, I do think he will be worth his contract. You just don’t see a guy this young hit the market and we were willing to pay Stanton for 10yrs through his age 38 season or whatever and, rather than compare Harper to Trout or Rodriguez, I see him as a better bet than Stanton.

ParticipantDoes anyone else feel that Mozeliak would be putting his job on the line by signing Harper? Mo has had a pretty poor run of late, one more colossal long-term fail and its lights out. Of course, the same goes with Machado.
January 4, 2019 at 1:37 pm #79274Mo more likely putting his job on the line by NOT signing Harper, since he to chicken to do it and if Cards miss post season again after not doing so….see yeah fool MO!
January 4, 2019 at 2:25 pm #79277I am surprised I have to reiterate this point every now and then. On items of hundreds of millions of dollars of importance, what matters is what Bill DeWitt Jr. wants.
January 4, 2019 at 3:38 pm #79287Brian, I didn’t view my comments as an accusation. It was more of an observation. I really don’t want to scroll back through this board and copy/paste all of your comments about Boras. I was just curious as to what led you to view him in such a negative light. I’m not trying to defend him. I could care less about him. No need to be defensive about it.
January 4, 2019 at 4:10 pm #79292Perhaps there could have been a less challenging way of asking the initial question, as you did later. I did my best to answer, anyway, while aiming it back into the context of this thread, but that was considered defensive. Sorry I missed giving you what you wanted.
January 13, 2019 at 6:08 am #79885Looks like things are starting to come to an end on the two big FAs. This question doesn’t have anything to do with the Cardinals, but would 10, 330 get it done with Harper? If so, I could see him back with the Nationals.
January 13, 2019 at 10:47 pm #79932Philadelphia #Phillies emerge as clear-cut favorite to land Bryce Harper after 5-hour meeting as #Nats interest fades barring sudden change of heart. https://t.co/0j5B5Pu2Gg

Participantyea it seems its phillies or dodgers. personally I don’t think Philadelphia is gonna win their division and I don’t think they are a good fit for harper so hes gonna end up just as unhappy there. I think where a player plays can matter far as how they perform. if I was him, id go to the dodgers if its reasonably close far as their offers.
January 15, 2019 at 8:40 am #79979I wouldn’t assume that the Phillies will sign Harper. The Phils might be throwing that out there just to put pressure on Machado to accept their offer. I think they want Machado more than Harper.
I complained in another thread about commenting on Machado/Harper and now I am doing it myself. …ugh
January 15, 2019 at 8:41 pm #79994We will see how this question is answered in St. Louis this weekend…
Fan question to Joe: “What are the chances of Bryce Harper?” Maddon, no pause: “Not going to happen.” Jim Deshaies: “Lets move on”

January 16, 2019 at 8:29 am #80042If our guys are honest they will give the same answer.
January 16, 2019 at 10:36 am #80052Which is to bad because Cards could REALLY use Harper in RF
January 16, 2019 at 11:51 am #80060
stlcard25ParticipantI’d say they could use him in the batter’s box more than in right field. ?
Like the rest of y’all, I don’t see any way it happens though.
January 16, 2019 at 12:30 pm #80063Agree it is easy to see Cards to cheap to go get him 😉

ParticipantWe already have our starting right fielder as announced by the FO….. Dexter Fowler. How can you improve on that?
January 16, 2019 at 1:46 pm #80069Yeah how can you improve on garbage……
January 16, 2019 at 4:46 pm #80075No one loves mystery teams more than Heyman.
phillies, nats and chisox are the only 3 teams known to be in on bryce harper. but fwiw, word is, several teams are said to be waiting in the wings. the word "waiting" suggests this may yet take awhile.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 16, 2019
January 16, 2019 at 5:16 pm #80076My guess would be that it’s only one team possibly waiting in the wings….and it wouldn’t shock me in the least if Atlanta is that team.
January 18, 2019 at 5:08 pm #80253January 23, 2019 at 11:52 am #80531Are Harper and Machado ever going to sign? We are only about three weeks away from spring training.
Isnt it about time something happened with these two?
