Kind of a gamble for a player who has never played a MLB game. The Brewers must really trust their talent evaluators. Not only the skill level of the player but the mental makeup of the player. Will a 19 year old player stay motivated after receiving $80M?

Depends on who is answering. Before the off-season, MLB Trade Rumors predicted Hoskins would get 2/$36MM. So MIL is paying $1MM less per year.
First Woodruff and now Burnes…

Shortstop Joey Ortiz and left-hander D.L. Hall are going to the Milwaukee Brewers in the trade that will send Corbin Burnes to Baltimore, a source tells ESPN.

Seems a bit light on the return for Burnes, but then he will be in his walk year and the Crew needed to get something.
The NLC is going to be a sad division. I can see the Pirates taking a leap with Cruz coming back, and being the surprise division champ.

Devin Williams has a sore back and is headed to get a second opinion from a spine specialist this week. It’s flared up this spring and while the Brewers aren’t overly concerned at this point they are going to be cautious with it.

The Brewers are indestructible. No Counsell, no Burnes, no Woodruff, no Williams no problem. They will probably cruise along without Yelich too.
They do a great job of taking the average player and getting the maximum out of their ability! I wish we were as good at it as they are!
Another data point for the value of top closers. A starter plus 2B prospect, ranked 25th in their system. Williams has one year remaining before free agency, same as Helsley and Cortes from the Yankees.

Yelich played like a true superstar for the Brewers for the first two years after they acquired him. He even won MVP-1 in his first year and MVP-2 in his second year. Then, unfortunately, his production dropped off and his physical well being became unreliable. He has posted some very good, but not great, stats since. Regardless of what happens he gets to collect $110.5M from the Brewers and their fans over the remaining years of his contract. At least it’s reassuring to know that his two superstar years had nothing to do with steroids because they happened in this era of MLB where the use of steroids has been eliminated.
Another data point for the value of top closers.
Here is another data point. Cortes only made 12 starts in 2023 due to multiple shutdowns with rotator cuff problems. That’s shoulder. Then in 2024 he was shut down mid September with flexor tendon trouble. That’s elbow. He missed the rest of the regular season, finishing with a losing record, missed the ALDS with elbow trouble, missed the ALCS with elbow trouble and did 2 innings in the WS allowing 2 runs.
So a former 36th rounder with battle damage who is holding it together, sort of, and an OK infield prospect who probably doesn’t have a left side arm.
I looked into Caleb Durbin, the AAA 2B prospect that came along with Cortes. 5’6″ former Division 3 player who went to Washington University in St. Louis, the same school as Loutos. Reading some of the local Milwaukee press and Brewers blog stuff, Durbin is a UT who can play anywhere, primarily infield. Walks more than he strikes out. He missed a couple months this year to injury, hand I think, but that info is sketchy. How his bat will play in ML is an issue they say.
So add this to my previous post to get a realistic ‘data point’ as to the value one year of Williams brought. A sore arm starter with both shoulder and elbow trouble, and an undersized pesky UT out of Div 3. Would we be happy with that value from one year of Helsley? How does it stack against what we are hoping for?
The Brewers are smart. They traded Williams for Caleb Durbin. He fits their offensive philosophy perfectly. Read this if you want a different perspective than Blings on why Brewers did this trade.
I agree JJ we should get more for Helsley. I would be disappointed with that trade for the Cardinals. For the Brewers it makes sense. I learned not to lampoon their deals on the surface. Durbin is the center of that trade for Brewers.

Your preaching to the choir JJ. But the Brewers somehow keep coming out of it with players they can win with. They have an identity. The Cardinals need to start thinking about that. Who are we, really? You sure can’t tell from the roster we rolled out the last few years. Hopefully these are the changes Bloom is working on.
My beef is with the slanted portrayal of the deal presented by just about everyone who wrote anything about it, and the implication that the Williams trade means Cardinals fans should be anticipating an impactful haul for Helsley. The Brewers, like the Cardinals, had/have one year of control of a premium closer to trade. I was just trying to present the value that came back with some attachment to reality. The Brewers got one year control of a starter who had a big year in 2022 and whose arm has been coming apart ever since, and an undersized UT who likely might be marginally useful to a marginally competitive team. It seems extremely unlikely he will approach Donovan usefulness. Depending on what comes of Cortes’s flexor tendon issue, and depending on how his shoulder holds together, he could spend most of the year of control on the IL and they may well get nothing much at all out of this deal.
