MLB wants to delay or shorten the season. It has no clear legal grounds to do so without the union’s consent.
The players are committed to being paid for 162 games and have no intention of making a deal that changes that.
That letter means little.https://t.co/W5nazmnUDo

Both MLB and the players association are willing to cut off their noses to spite their face. It seems almost inevitable that there will be a strike or lockout in 2022. This will have a catastrophic effect on revenues as fans who are scarred by the events of 2020-21 will choose to spend their money elsewhere. Again, I could see baseball being the #3 revenue sport by 2022 and threatening #4 by the decade’s end.January 26, 2021 at 9:48 am #152460
Should like the players are ready to show up for ST. Makes me wonder if the gates will be open.January 26, 2021 at 10:17 am #152461
Which gates are you referring to?January 26, 2021 at 10:20 am #152462

Do not expect fan access to the back fields this spring. As noted on the schedule thread, game capacity is going to be about 25%.January 26, 2021 at 11:40 am #152465
We’ll know shortly.January 28, 2021 at 8:35 pm #152620
Commissioner Rob Manfred and deputy commissioner Dan Halem spoke today with union head Tony Clark and lead negotiator Bruce Meyer, sources tell @TheAthletic. Exact subjects covered not known. Health and safety protocols likely discussed. Club medical staffs waiting on them.

I think this ideal of not allowing fans at stadiums is ludicrous at this point. I understand not at full capacity at some stadiums but none is rediculous. Mlb baseball is basically a job not leisure activity. They have a right to open their business and make money. All places have policies but they don’t regularly enforce them especially when it effects their bottom line, why should professional sports be any different. At this point I think that mlb should allow teams to sell apps that let you stream all their games just like disney plus or netflix and have no limitations like the regular mlb streaming.January 31, 2021 at 12:54 pm #152969January 31, 2021 at 1:29 pm #152976

Cant read that article unless one subscribes.
With a month delay and only eight games less wouldnt that mean quite a few doubleheaders?
r/Esteemed RatJanuary 31, 2021 at 4:05 pm #152984
Under MLB's proposal, spring training would start March 22nd, and the regular season April 28, with the postseason carrying over into November.

Even with a formal rejection of #MLB's proposal to delay the season, the union and MLB still have until opening day to reach a potential agreement on the universal DH and expanded playoffs. They reached an agreement just hours before opening day last season. https://t.co/rmHP1OHbpX

I just received a little more details on the proposal. It significantly modifies the CBA already in effect, almost exclusively to the benefit of management. My old thread analyzes the public aspects of the proposal I had at the time.
1. 154 games with 162 games pay 1/ https://t.co/Fb94oSzvZz
— (((EugeneFreedman))) (@EugeneFreedman) January 31, 2021
runner on 2nd in extra innings
5. Commissioner gains more authority to suspend season, cancel games w/out consent of Union (play foreboding music)
6. playoffs expanded to 14 teams
I'm sure there is more small details to the offer, but these are the major details I received.

Get rid of the “commissioner gets to cancel the season” part and I’d be happy if that was the agreement.January 31, 2021 at 4:54 pm #152990
Some of union concerns about MLB's proposal:
In eyes of PA, the proposal would give Manfred expanded authority to shut down the season.
Less margin for error in executing schedule.
Trade of expanded playoffs for the universal DH, a swap union doesn't want.
But they are talking.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) January 31, 2021February 1, 2021 at 9:51 am #153028
Union likely to reject MLB proposal to delay season, and might not even counter. A number of players believe it is too late in offseason to revise schedule. Possible that parties can revisit expanded playoffs/DH before start of season, but union opposes expanded playoffs.

I have wondered the same thing Brian.February 1, 2021 at 10:21 am #153042
I think the owners are overestimating how much the universal DH means to the players. I have heard some people say “it creates more jobs”. How is that? The only way to create more jobs is to expand the rosters. I guess it creates more jobs to players who aren’t good enough to play in the field but other than that I don’t see how it is a big boon to the players.
The owners keep trying to trade the universal DH in exchange for expanded playoffs but the two issues really aren’t equal.February 1, 2021 at 10:30 am #153043
You are right, gscottar. And it is further exacerbated by MLB limiting the player share of expanded playoff revenue. As is, MLB’s proposal has almost no chance of being accepted.
There are some who believe the players will not give on expanded playoffs period for 2021, instead wanting to keep it as a bargaining chip for the new CBA. That makes sense to me from a negotiating standpoint.February 1, 2021 at 1:46 pm #153078mudvilleParticipantPaid - Annual
With expanded playoffs the players get more work and therefore, more money, and they get an expanded opportunity to win something personally, and for their team. If they object to that, then they’re just posturing and in a sense, already negotiating the next CLB.February 1, 2021 at 7:27 pm #153103BlackHillsCardParticipantFree
If I post a tweet link from my laptop they show up but if I’m using my cellphone they don’t show the actual tweet, just the link.
