ParticipantI personally feel like Perez is going to prove everyone wrong this year that doubted him.
February 16, 2018 at 9:37 am #43939We will have to see, but I find it amazing that a barely-turned 19-year old is already being written off as a bust.
February 16, 2018 at 9:58 am #4394014NyquisT
ParticipantI hope that Perez will do a 180 and have a productive ’18, but with his baggage, two unsuccessful pro seasons and a trending downward on most ranking lists, its seems that it would be difficult to call him a premier prospect. Even if ’18 doesn’t go well, the organization will continue to look for life but at some point DP will have to start playing ball.
February 16, 2018 at 10:27 am #43942I have no problem with either side of the argument.
He has a high ceiling.
But he is going to have to put the work in… or else.
He could be either way too low… or way too high (I pretty much refused to vote on him because he is a crapshoot at this point).
Everyone hopes he gets his head out of his posterior. Because if he does he could do some awesome things.
February 16, 2018 at 10:44 am #43943There should be no debate that Perez has disappointed to date and needs to step up his performance to realize his potential. My only beef is hanging the “bust” label on any player based on his results at age 17 and 18.

ParticipantFrom the Post-Dispatch:
In camp this spring, the Cardinals have four pitchers, including big-leaguers Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes, who had a 100-mph-or faster pitch confirmed by TrackMan. Hicks and Conner Greene are the other two, and Helsley has had pitches clocked at 100 mph. Hudson regularly throws around 95 mph and reaches upper-90s at times. Baseball America thought enough of the prospects that Hicks (No. 5), Hudson (No. 7), and Helsley (No. 8) are all rated in the team’s top 10.
How good is Ryan Helsley really? Can we consider Greene a sleeper? I think we all know how good Hicks and Hudson are. Mo was quoted as saying that he feels that Helsley-Hicks and Hudson may be of some help in St.Louis this season. I think at least one will be pitching in Busch, Hicks would seem to have the lead.
February 18, 2018 at 12:38 pm #44109Hmmm. Helsley and Hudson both have Triple-A experience, while Hicks has yet to pitch a game for Springfield. Hicks may have the highest ceiling, but I am not sure he is ahead in the race to St. Louis right now.

ParticipantI wanted to find out the new name of the Cards stadium in Jupiter, but after that story is another story by Joe Trezza about Danny Poncedeleon’s traumatic experience on May 9th, 2017. Its a feel good piece that is a must read for Card fans. I’ve followed that episode as much as possible, with much empathy and this by far the best account of the accident, the his Memphis teammate’s recollections of their thoughts that day. the recovery period and where Ponce is today. Its a remarkable trip he took to get back on the mound. Tough guy… tough family. Check it out.

ps… the new name is The Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

ParticipantFrom Rick HUmmel today: Hmmm.
It isn’t likely that many, or any, of the players will be with the club on opening day, but very likely that two or all will be in St. Louis before the year is over. The players in question are Jack Flaherty, Oscar Mercado and Jordan Hicks.

Perez had a good debut season in 2016.

ParticipantIt was ’17 that he unraveled.

#Cardinals’ No. 3 prospect Delvin Perez removed from the game after throwing his bat and helmet after striking out in the top of the 8th.
7:40 PM – Jun 26, 2017 · Kingsport, TN********************************************************************************
The above report from Johnson City two weeks ago noted Perez was visibly frustrated at the plate, He sat out the next two games as well, so it appears an overall reset is needed.
Perez is The Cardinal Nation’s third-ranked prospect, but that could change in our new rankings coming out this week.
While this is certainly not a death knell for Perez, it is concerning, nonetheless. Other Cardinals teen-aged hitting prospects have been backed off more aggressive assignments before, including Carson Kelly, Magneuris Sierra and Bryce Denton. The difference, however, was those original placements were at full-season Class-A, not simply the next rung still in Rookie ball.
It will be interesting to see how Perez responds to this highly-visible wake up call.
(Brian Walton contributed to the final two player items above.)**********************************************************************************
After the incident, he went 3-21 and sat out 4 of the last 5 games for JC before going back to the GCL.
His season ended on 8/7 when he was hit by a pitch on a rainy day and replaced with a PR. The wet weather didn’t bother the JC batters as they won a 16-1 game called after 6 inn. because of the rain.
2017 is not the type of season you would expect from a 1st-rounder in his second year. Was it just a bad year? That could be, he is young and capable of much better. Let’s see if ’18 treats him better. The point is: it was more than his low stats that plagued his season and he needs to get it together. We need him happy and healthy.
February 26, 2018 at 12:53 pm #44713I posted in another thread recently (obviously the wrong thread) that Perez would be the minor leaguer I would watch the most this year. We don’t get to draft many guys with this high of a ceiling so it would be a shame to finally get to draft one and have him flop. Hopefully 2017 was an aberration.

ParticipantThe Cards minor league affiliates will be opening their camps on Wed. 3/7. Starting on 3/15 until 3/30 the four full-season squads will be playing spring training games against other teams of the same level for 13 games until the camps break. They’ll start their regular season games on 4/5.
AAA Memphis @ Round Rock(TEX)
AA Springfield @ Midland(OAK)
A-adv. Palm Beach – Jupiter(MIA)
low-A. Peoria @ Burlington(LAA)The Cards have started sending 7 players(RHPs Poncedeleon-Woodford-HMendoza LHP Schafer Cs JeMartinez-DOrtega and 2B Schrock-rehab) down to the minors and those numbers will increase as the MiLB camps open and they start playing their spring training games.
BW posted all of this info on 2/2 and this serves as a reminder.

Participant“A lot of these guys in here, these young guys, they have better stuff than me, but I just try to go out there and put up numbers. At the end of the day that prospect ranking means only so much. You have to go out there and have success. That’s what I focus on.”
-Austin Gomber
Gomber has been dealing with stiff competition throughout his pro career. The fact is he has been putting up numbers that can spell MLB success.

ParticipantDoes anyone here want to pick THREE prospects not in the top-40 (Community list 10/11-’17) that will stand out and move up on the prospects list significantly by mid-season?
I go with Cedeno-Kruczynski-Summerville.
We’ll know by June. The Community vote can be found on PAGE 1 of the ST LOUIS CARDINALS 2018 PROSPECT VOTING TOPIC
March 15, 2018 at 6:07 am #45707By mid season is tough. Basically rules out anyone who will start in short season ball (Cedeno?).
I’ll go with Sumerville, Santos, and Young.
March 15, 2018 at 6:40 am #4570814NyquisT
ParticipantCC, my bad…. you’re right , it should say by the end of the season.
March 15, 2018 at 7:01 am #45711In that case, I think Cedeno is a strong choice. I also like Moises Castillo and Julio Rodriguez.
Ok, now I have given 6 names 🙂

ParticipantI haven’t heard any commentary about the fate of Gant for ’18. The 2.0 I/P on Sunday didn’t help determine if he’ll be in the MEM rotation or the bullpen. We’ll have a better idea if his next outing will be as a starter or reliever. If they plan on him starting he could be a candidate, along with Flaherty, for 1st starter up to the big team. Time will tell.
March 19, 2018 at 8:44 am #45868Mo has specifically said that they see Gant has a starter.
MM all but said it here as well

ParticipantThanks cc, that answers some questions. That bunch of starting candidates at MEM is crowded, but it looks like Flaherty, Helsley, Hudson and Gant are givens.
March 19, 2018 at 9:16 am #45871I’ve got Flaherty, Gant, Hudson, Gomber, and either Helsley or Poncedeleon. I would not be shocked to see Helsley back at Springfield. He only has 38 innings above A ball under his belt.

ParticipantI was stunned to hear that Jorge Rodriguez passed away in the DR from complications due to bone cancer. The State College page on MLB.com “Affiliates” has a story on this yet another tragedy for the organization. He leaves behind a wife and son.
In the last 10 years or so, too many members of the Cardinals’ family have left the organization in mourning. Very sad.
March 22, 2018 at 1:48 pm #46051There is also a story on the home page here.
March 22, 2018 at 1:59 pm #46055I would say Flaherty, Hudson, Gant, Gomber are all given to be starters. Throw in Poncedeleon and Herget in the mix as well.
