cardsfan64ParticipantSorry to see Thomas go. I thought after the 2022 AFL that he had a chance to pitch for the big league team, but injuries and not performing well did him in. Funny that he wasn’t mentioned as a potential drop by too many people. Friday will provide some more drama when contracts have to be tendered!
November 14, 2023 at 4:30 pm #237244It looks like I got everything right except Naile (with Woodford still to come). I had them cutting Wainwright, VerHagan, Lawrence, Barnes, Lopez, Querecuto, Suarez, Wilking Rodriguez, Naile, Leahy, Thomas, and Woodford. Instead of Naile, the Cards went with Packy Naughton.
I had them protecting Robberse and Kloffenstein and I said I would protect Pages but I didn’t think they would in the end. But they did do all 3. I also later corrected Prieto’s situation where he did not need to be added.
Now I didn’t call the Cards signing Riley O’Brien, James Young, or Buddy Kennedy, but heh, no one is perfect.
I think they will want 1 spot open to choose a rule 5 player if someone is enticing. They don’t necessarily need to leave a space open for a free agent because they can always just cut someone off the roster when they need to (I think anyway – they may not be able to until after the Rule 5 draft so someone feel free to correct me if that is the case). So if they can indeed always drop someone to make room for a free agent, then I believe they will just non-tender Woodford and leave it at that. I could also see Knizner getting non-tendered or possibly Hudson. Hudson saves some money and a roster spot if he’s cut but he offers insurance if he stays or he could be traded as he probably has some value that’s greater than his $3.5 million contract to a team that is desperate for a low end starting pitcher. I think they offer contracts to everyone else.

November 14, 2023 at 6:55 pm #237251Elijah Dunham, NYY, and Devin Mann, KC, are 2 intriguing names to me.
Dunham had a rough year at AAA, but if they are to trade Burlson to get pitching taking a flying on a guy like Dunham to compete for a bench spot with Young could be intriguing.
Mann, can play 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, and has hit decent in the minors for LAD before being traded to KC at the deadline, and struggled a bit after the trade. He finished last season with .276/.387/.502 including 42 2B, 20 HR, 79 BB, but 149 K. They are likely to go cheep at back up IF with Donovan being the true “Utility guy” but playing every day, probably starting as DH coming off surgery. So taking a flyer on a guy like Mann could make sense.November 15, 2023 at 3:06 am #237266LouisEu
ParticipantWhy is Ian Bedell eligible for the Rule V draft?
He was drafted in 2020.
Only 4 years in the minorsNovember 15, 2023 at 5:17 am #237268Players signed at 18 years or younger need to be added to their club’s 40-man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.
November 15, 2023 at 9:25 am #237276Right now the guys who sat out 2020 are right there. Add in an injury year and it’s a confounding situation. You have to make a roster decision about a guy like Bedell all you have to look at is a year in A level ball.
November 15, 2023 at 9:39 am #237277PadsFS
ParticipantIan Bedell should’ve been added.
We have guys like Fermin, Zuniga, Naile, Buddy Kennedy that we picked up from Oakland, Michael Siani that we picked up from Cincinnati, 29 yr old O’Brien from Seattle, and 29 yr old Jared Young from Chicago on the 40-man. I wouldn’t bat an eye if they cut the whole lot of them. The ‘depth’ these guys provide can be found in spring training after the roster is more settled.
November 15, 2023 at 10:02 am #237280Pads – I don’t disagree that Bedell has more value than some of those guys at the end of the roster. But the main reason I didn’t think he’d be added were because I think he’s too far away from the majors to project and because by adding him, the Cardinals start the clock on his arbitration. If they wait a year and add him next November, then they ultimately get one more year of service from him. So it’s not about him being more valuable, it’s about the value potential of one extra year.
November 15, 2023 at 10:17 am #237282
jj-cf-stlParticipantActive 26man roster days drives every players arb clock (service time), nothing else. IL accumulates days too, but after being “active”.
Added to the 40man can be demoted, for multiple years, before starting to accumulate service time.
November 15, 2023 at 10:23 am #237283On the Cardinals official site top 30 list Bedell’s ETA is listed as 2024.
November 15, 2023 at 10:51 am #237285Big gamble leaving Bedell off the 40-man just to put off his arbitration for a year. I could see him taken by another team and then surviving in their bullpen for a year while pitching middle relief and mop up. Our front office must be dead certain that Bedell cannot pitch at the major league level at all.
November 15, 2023 at 11:07 am #237288How many other Bedells are out there? Unless he really stands out compared to the rest of the Rule 5 pool created from all 30 teams, I assert that his chances of being taken AND STICKING IN MLB ALL NEXT SEASON is low.
I predicted Bedell would not be protected so I am not surprised he wasn’t. Nothing against him, but the Midwest League is a LOOOOOOONG way from MLB.
November 15, 2023 at 11:47 am #237299Thanks for the encouragement. I feel slightly better. I know about your call that he wouldn’t be protected. But I really hate to take any chance of losing Bedell because of an arbitration year. I like him. He pitched for Mizzou and wanted to pitch for the Cardinals. He was a late round draft selection, late in terms of the 2020 draft, that is, and could almost be considered a hidden gem, or low hanging fruit, etc, IMHO. He was also really good in college and it looks like he’s finally breaking out after being slow-walked by the the Cardinals because of his health and because of time lost due to COVID. Thanks, again, for the encouragement.
November 15, 2023 at 11:56 am #237303Thanks JJ. I had always believed that arbitration eligibility had to do with time on the 40-man roster. I guess not.
So the advantage to not adding Bedell is simply about roster space. Like Brian, I also think the odds are super low. Even if a team wanted to make a crazy move by selecting someone from A ball, there are multiple other Bedell’s out there to choose from. And, many guys that are taken end up being returned. So some risk, but not a lot.
November 15, 2023 at 12:06 pm #237305And please remember, it is much easier to take a player than it is to keep him in the majors for a year.
In other words, even if the low odds hit and Bedell is taken, it is about the same low odds that he would stick all season. Many, many Rule 5 guys are returned. I don’t have the data, but my guess is that the lower the level of the player, the less likely he sticks.
So, to lose Bedell would require two low odds scenarios to both hit. If we very generously assign 10% odds to each condition, 10% times 10% equals 1%. Not zero, but not enough to worry about, IMO.

jj-cf-stlParticipantJ, have you been to Cots transaction glossary? Very informative. Must read for any seamhead, like you!

that is, and could almost be considered a hidden gem, or low hanging fruit, etc, IMHO.
Thank you for using this term correctly. It irks me when people use it incorrectly.
November 15, 2023 at 1:50 pm #237316JJ- thanks. No, I have never looked there. I feel like I know many of the rules, but man does baseball have a lot of them. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Also, I’ve never heard the term “seamhead”! I’m not sure how to take that!
November 15, 2023 at 2:51 pm #237322regarding ‘seamhead’ ……
See Etymology 2, definition 1…
‘Seam’ possibly refers to the seams on a baseball…
So ‘seamhead’ probably means ‘people who regularly have their minds focused on baseball’….No matter. Here’s a big list of baseball terms. Seamhead is not on it. So, I’m unilaterally adding ‘seamhead’ to the list. We’ll use whatever definition makes sense…..
https://www.baseballmonkey.com/learn/baseball-terms-slang-defined
Now there are 156 terms if we just use our imagination…
My favorite term on this list for today is ‘rhubarb’. I have’t heard that one in ages.
November 15, 2023 at 4:42 pm #237327I have said for 3 years that Pages is the Cardinals long term catcher of the future. I started tô question that after the Contreras signing but he appears he may not last 5 years back there.
Pages is undoubtedly the closet thing tô Yadi in the system.
November 15, 2023 at 4:49 pm #237328CC – I agree and have uttered the same thing. Pages is a true field leader. Watching him take charge of the game is fun. Plus, I think he’s better in big moments. He’s always been a favorite of mine. And I’m really happy for him. I’d love to see he and Herrera as a future catching partnership.
November 15, 2023 at 5:05 pm #237330Over the years, many folks may have come across seamheads.com.

ParticipantI meant to reply on this to say good call on Ian Bedell. Glad to have him in the organization for 2024 too.
