When I look up and down that Dodger lineup and see all that firepower with names spelled Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, Hernandez, Muncy and Pages, I think of that ’04 Redbird lineup. It’s almost not fair to the opposing pitcher and you pretty much know that eventually all that pressure is going to grind him down to a nub.
Happy with the first three games today. Guardians, Padres and Yankees all win. I saw where that Padre win was the first time in the three game wild card series era that a road team that lost game one came back to win game two.
So far my take on the Guardians-Tigers is spot on. I felt Skubal would win game one, and Cleveland would bounce back for a fairly easy game two win. It wasn’t easy until late, but still. I think the series finale will be a nail biter, but am hoping the Guards advance.
Yamamoto and the Dodgers escape a bases jammed with no outs Reds threat in the visitor half of the 6th as the Reds fail to score and still trail by a run.
He produces with an RBI single to RF to put the Dodgers ahead 4-2. No rest for the weary as in stands Betts…
Betts with an RBI double to make it 5-2 Dodgers. In stands Freeman with baserunners at 2nd and 3rd. Tito has to IBB Freeman to jam the bases and work to Hernandez hoping for a GIDP.
It doesn’t work…Hernandez with a 2 RBI double to make it 7-2. Dodgers with too much firepower. I don’t see anyone advancing past the team in blue uniforms.
The Dodger home half of the 6th merfcifully comes to an end for the Reds who now trail by 5 with only 9 outs left in the bank. This is baseball and anything’s possible, but it looks like they’re headed home.
Roberts walks out and gets his RH’er at 113 pitches with runners aboard at 1st and 2nd. He let his pitcher work. Roberts is a genuine Big League manager. I wish we had one of those.
Today’s games featured Big League managers named, Counsell, Schildt, Francona, Boone, Hinch and Roberts…That’s no coincidence.
Betts makes it 8-2 Dodgers with an 8th inning 1 out RBI double. This Dodger lineup isn’t hardly fair and Little Eddie ain’t even in there tonight…Haha!
Yeah, some good managers there. Say what you want about “philosophical differences”, but all Shildt has done as a manager is win. If I have a manager that wins, I would say “well the guy is not always in sync with us upstairs, but it works.”
Counsell wins a lot as well, as does Francona.
The Reds load the bases and scuffle for a run in the visitor half of the 8th to cut the Dodger lead to 8-4. At least they haven’t packed it in and quit. I saw plenty of that this season and it’s nice to see a team that refuses to kneel down and roll over.
Teams managed by Roberts, Hinch and Boone hang quite a few W’s up on the board too, Bikemike. Boone has yet to win the big prize, but he’s 200 games above .500 as the Yankee manager for a .584 W/L pct. in 8 seasons. And Hinch and Roberts boast 6 pennants and 3 WS championships between them.
Well, the Dodgers dispatch the Reds to become the first team to advance to the LDS. No surpirse there. And they also make me look like a genuine baseball gypsy fortune teller as my picks are a perfect 4 for 4 in today’s action. That can only mean that tomorrow will offer up a genuine baseball gypsy fortune telling disaster…Haha! That’s why I love baseball.
The manager for the Red Sox is no slouch either. He has won a world series as both a player and a manager.
He apparently got caught up in a scandal a few years back, had to sit out a year, then the Red Sox hired him back.
Yeah, his team amassed 108 W’s during the regular season in which he led the Red Sox to a WS championship. Maybe it’s possible that a capable manager really does have a slight impact on the success or failure of a baseball team.
A good manager can certainly make a difference but they still need a good roster and the authority to make their own decisions. Even guys like TLR, Whitey, or Bochy failed to make the playoffs on occasion.
The Tigers hand the baseball to a pitcher who, during the regular season, was 8-15 with an ERA of 4.64 in an attempt to fend off elimination. Mikolas was 8-11 with an ERA of 4.84…That’s beyond brutal if I’m a Tiger’s fan.
Yeah gscottar, it just shows to go you that managers who sometimes fail to lead their teams to the post-season still have a decent chance of being elected to the HOF.
