Playoff baseball is fun. It’s more fun when the Cardinals are in and advancing but I’ve gotten used to them stinking so… Lol
I’m happy knowing that the Mets have been bounced from post-season consideration and I’ll be happy again when the ghosts of the ’84 NLCS see to it that the Cubs are eliminated in the WC round by the Padres.
I have to give the Yankees credit for closing out the season with 8 consecutive W’s in an attempt to catch the Blue Jays in the ALE. They couldn’t quite get it done but there was no quit from the team that wears those nice looking pinstripes. I’ll also say that although I picked the Jays to represent the AL in the WS, the Yankees would be my first pick as the team to prove me wrong.
Yeah ZTR, I really enjoy watching baseball in the Autumn when all the chips get pushed to the center of the table. And although I obviously wish the Redbirds were participating, I’m much less likely to go into cardiac arrest when they aren’t taking to the field after the end of the regular season…Haha!
And for my baseball gypsy fortune teller visions, this round is easy…I clearly see images of the Dodgers, Padres, Yankees and Indians in this WC round. However, this is baseball and now that I’ve said that, all the road teams except the Padres will advance…Haha!
In ’06 on this very site (then named “The Birdhouse”), your’s truly ran the table to perfection with our playoff picks. Are we ready for an encore performance? This first round is an absolute piece of cake. Here are the teams that are coming out of this Wild Card series victorious:

Guardians – tough call here as Skubal will likely win game one, so the Guards have to win two straight with their backs to the wall
Cubs – hate to say it, but the way they hammered us, they look primed; they might even get to the LCS
Yankees – rivalry series are tough to pick; both clubs played well late; going with the home team but like the Guardians-Tigers, this could easily go the other way
Dodgers – the Reds are a nice story and I love Francona as a manager, but talent heavily favors the boys in blue
My predictive winners in the wild card round are:

DodgersBut I will be the biggest Padre fan in the country this week.
The ghosts of ’84 are already firmly entrenched and strategically scattered all around various areas of Wrigley Field and will be laying in wait in order to pounce prior to first pitch of tomorrow’s Padres/Cubs NLWC games. The Cubbies haven’t a sliver of a chance and it’s my best guess that Tony Gwynn will be smiling throughout this one…
I’m rooting for the Ohio Cup. Cleveland sort of sold and lost some guys and Cincinnati and Franconia backed into the postseason thanks to an oh so predictable Mets collapse.

North Tijuana Cockroaches (hard for me to swallow either team)As much as I like to disparage the current post-season WC format, I have to admit that it doesn’t get much better for a baseball fan than to have almost non-stop high stakes baseball action for the next 3 days. These contests begin at about noon and won’t shut down until it’s time for 1TD to go nite-nite. In any case, all that post-season baseball in 3 days makes me about as happy as a dog with two tails…

An Ohio Cup series would be fun. You figure the Guardians, with their big late season success, could continue that momentum into the post. But that is unlikely. And the Reds are similar to the 2006 Cardinals. Thus there is a chance, but again probably not happening.
Those ‘06 Cardinals got healthy at the right time, had two Hall of Famers, a third almost Famer, an Hall of Famer manager (which the Reds also have), and a legitimate number one ace who excelled under pressure. Even though they were not a good team, they had good players that missed a lot of time during the season and all were available come post season.
