    Trivia items:

Luken Baker is the only one to have appeared in a game every day that the Cardinals played this spring. (No one could play in every game because of the split squad games on Opening Day.)

At the other end, Tommy Edman is the only player to not appear in a game this spring.

Thanks. Do you know a current list of who is left in camp?

It is on the Roster Matrix right here at The Cardinal Nation. Always updated.

I dont peruse the matrix on my phone much. It looks like Robberse and Kloffenstein are only ones optioned out so far.

    Yeah, but, lol!
For instance, if O’Brian and Robertson have equal chances to make the roster, but one is listed at Memphis already and the other as STL. Both are still in camp, right? I’m sure you have reasons why the matrix is how it is. I’m looking for a simple “who’s left” list so I can watch the roster decisions they make.

The Roster Matrix has been consistent since the start (2009). Over the winter and in the spring, players are listed on the rosters at which they finished last season. It is not a predictive Opening Day roster.

In this specific example, O’Brien finished 2023 in Triple-A. So, that is where he stays until he earns a promotion.

When 40-man players (which are in bold) are optioned out, they say OPT. If the optioned out players were with StL at the end of 2023, they are then moved down to Memphis.

When NRIs are sent down, the NRI next to their name is crossed out. By definition, they did not finish 2023 with St. Louis.

By the end of camp, the St. Louis roster will be accurate at 26 active + any IL players.

The Matrix states the current total in camp is 38 40-man and eight NRIs. 46 total.

I agree the Roster Matrix is not phone friendly. Too much info for that little screen.

NRI players left in Major league camp right now:
Koperniak, Leahy, Prieto, Raposo, W Rodriquez, Saggese, Scott, Stauss.

Bling listed the two pitchers that have been optioned. Possible position players moving back to AAA are:
Young, A Rivas, L Baker, Fermin, Siani, Burleson, Pages. Depending on injuries, some OF on this list may be on the opening day roster.

Possible pitchers being optioned down are:
King, Romero, Rom, Robertson, O’Brien, Liberatore, Thompson, Pallante, and Rule 5 pick Fernandez. Not all of these will be sent down, but some will have to be. Fernandez would have to be offered back if he is sent down.

Lots of decisions to be made!

Middleton’s injury is concerning because forearm strain often means elbow trouble is brewing or present. Look for this situation to go down hill.

Why would you give a team bulletin board material like that? Not very smart. It was already going to be difficult to avoid the sweep as is. Mr. 70’s mustache should focus more on pitching and less on talking.

Yesterday I saw that some LA fan sights were already getting revved up over it.

Miles should stick to shuffle board in the geriatric wing of the clubhouse.

Walker on the Carlson collision: “What we’ve been taught is … the center fielder once he calls you off, you stop. Until then, you’re giving 100 percent effort. That’s what I was doing, giving 100 percent effort. If he called me off, I’m sorry if I didn’t hear him.” John Denton on X.

The Cardinals are lucky to not lose Walker until the AS break with a broken leg from a collision like that. It would be understandable if Walker looks a bit timid closing on the center fielder for a while.

If my memory serves me correctly, rosters are not required to be set until the morning of the first game. They may announce informally before that. Carlson if unable to go and the last pen spot are about all that is left in question. And with King having been unable to pitch, his chances are decreasing.

Why did they take so many players to Arizona?

    Bushberger?
    Yeager?
    Pages?
    Antico?
    Crooks?
    Church?

Shouldn’t they have headed for their minor league teams to get settled?

It seems that the organization wants to get a better idea of what their destinations will be.

They just wanted more reserves to play to keep the veterans from getting hurt. Didn’t turn out so well for Carlson, though.

Memphis opens on Friday, so the players assigned there had two days to travel back. Springfield has an entire week more before they play. Pending late injuries, the players already know where they are assigned. I expect to have the Memphis roster today.

I don’t see any negative in this. I can assure you those players chosen to go to Arizona with St. Louis will remember it their entire lives. For some, it may be as close to being a major leaguer as they ever get.

I am sure the DeWitts would appreciate your frugality. Maybe they redirected some of the cost savings from using the cheapo new uniforms – and they didn’t bother to add the players’ names, either… 😉

The players can grab Sharpies and write the names on each other’s backs.
