Not a big deal to me on the opening day starter. Technically Ollie should have qualified his comment some, like “If things go as we hope they do Sonny Gray will start opening day, but let’s get through Spring Training first.”
I imagine that he feels the qualifying part is a given and something he did not need to say. I am no Marmol fan, but am okay on this one.

March 8, 2024 at 2:53 pm #243497Who is the backup CF now?
March 8, 2024 at 3:31 pm #243502Opening Day OF is probably Burly, Carlson, and Walker. Mo says they are going to be patient and cautious with Victor Scott but if he continues to have a good camp I wonder if they will be tempted to take him north.
March 8, 2024 at 3:39 pm #243503They will need somebody who can cover CF besides Carlson.
March 8, 2024 at 4:11 pm #243504
jj-cf-stlParticipantBader did the same and was out 6 to 8 weeks if I’m remembering correctly.
March 8, 2024 at 4:23 pm #243505
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe outfield carousel is alive and well. Michael A. Taylor is still a FA if they sign a band-aid.
March 8, 2024 at 4:27 pm #243506Adam Duvall would be my choice but probably too pricey for the Cards.
March 8, 2024 at 6:46 pm #243515Rib fractures? That ain’t good. By the time he recovers and has a ‘spring training’ I’d say 1/3 to 1/2 of the season will be in the books.
So that’s the starting CF / back up SS and another starting OF gone already…
I guess Mo will have to change clothes and go dumpster diving again.

jj-cf-stlParticipantRe: Edman, Nootbaar injuries
“….but we still have 3wks of camp left. So there’s a lot of time to still make some adjustments and decisions and we’ll see how things go” — Mo

jj-cf-stlParticipantI think the Crawford signing was an “adjustment and decision” too.
Maybe we stay in-house with our current CF/OF depth?
There are FA options available for CF. If at a Crawford similar contract, it’s possible they make an acquisition.
Carlson wasn’t a named starter for this season. His play this spring could influence any possible CF adjustments and decisions.
March 9, 2024 at 8:29 am #243535So far this spring vs. RHP, Carlson is 1-for-15 with no walks and five strikeouts. This is another reminder of why he is a reserve.
March 9, 2024 at 9:00 am #243542Looks like he’s a platoon player that only needs to take at bats vs. LHP.
Cardinals should have been more aware of what is going on with Edman ‘s recovery – and maybe they were – but their actions don’t tell me that.
March 9, 2024 at 9:49 am #243546Czrlson’s struggles against righties has always puzzled me. He is a natural left-handler, yet hits better righty. Now and then you see a guy like that – for me former Met Cleon Jones always comes to mind.
I wonder if Dillie has ever considered just hitting right-handed?
Back in the day, the young Ted Simmons was a much better left-handed batter than righty. He worked in the off-season to build strength in his left arm, the power arm for hitting right handed, and did get better hitting righty.
March 9, 2024 at 1:09 pm #243562
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf we are targeting an OF’r, good vs RHP’s and CF friendly, would be ideal.
March 9, 2024 at 1:14 pm #243564Carlson is a natural RHH. His dad has always been his primary hitting coach, I believe.
Last year, Edman gave up switch-hitting vs. certain pitchers due to poor splits. Don’t know if Carlson has considered it, but it seems like time…
March 9, 2024 at 1:37 pm #243568I agree Brian. He should give up hitting LH.
I did not know his dad was his hitting coach. I don’t like that vibe. It reminds me too much of Colby Rasmus.
March 10, 2024 at 12:08 pm #243609What an idiot that Skip Schumaker is! I just heard on the telecast that he has already named Jesus Luzardo his Opening Day starter! 😉
March 10, 2024 at 12:38 pm #243614A 26 year old guy in playing shape. Good choice.
March 10, 2024 at 12:42 pm #243616March 10, 2024 at 6:44 pm #243651Brian:
Good one!
